Samsung LS34E790C - Curved 34" 21:9 super-wide

Lads what calibration tool did ye use. Im tempted to get the X-Rite i1Display Pro

this is the settings I used may or may not be any use to you

magic bright: custom
brightness: 50
contrast: 75
gamma: mode 3
rgb

red 45
green 46
blue 50

I then used the graphics control panel to lower the gamma very slightly to give the colours a bit more pop without spoiling the brightness

On another note, does anyone know is there a test for blacks?

There was a chart on Family Guy

Otherwise you can check this site http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/black.php

Im not sure to laugh or cry.

Got home and turned on the pc and was wondering why the monitor wasnt turning on. I think it could be dead. I tried turning it on via pressing the button on the back in getting nothing

Anyway I can find out is the power brick dead or the monitor dead?

A multimeter across the pins on the power lead should read the same voltage as stated on the brick itself. If it's dead check the fuse first and failing that you will need a new power supply under warranty. If the supply is ok, then it's a full rma on the monitor

Right, I had this situation about 5 years ago with Dell but not sure whether Samsung have great customer service or not.

I have a dead thunderfly that made it's way behind my screen into the middle of my view. I'm gutted, but Dell replaced my monitor for me under warranty. I am surprised many years later there isn't a way to stop them getting in. Any ideas before I contact samsung?

What is it about this monitor that's causing me eye strain all the time? I didn't get this with any of my IPS or TN monitors but I cant look at this screen for too long without getting eye strain. Iv changed the text and everything but I cant tell if its just because its a VA panel and not good on my eyes or if its just this model in particular.

I don't know much about monitors.
But when I had mine I hooked it up via the supplied HDMI cable.
I used it for a few days and then noticed it was only running at 30hz.
I swapped to display port and Im now back at 60hz.
I'm not sure if it was the cable or my graphics card.

With this particular monitor 30Hz is the maximum refresh rate when using HDMI. Only DisplayPort will support 60Hz. I believe this is due to the amount of bandwidth supplied by HDMI vs DisplayPort.

I have just bought this monitor. HDMI defaults at 50Hz and can be set to 60Hz with a 3rd party tool (see the pcmonitors.info review for information).

As for my impressions, I am both impressed and disappointed.

Pros
- 21:9 34" 1440p is GLORIOUS for gaming. I couldn't go back to a standard aspect ratio now
- Great build quality
- Deep blacks

Cons
- Banding in colours is really quite irritating.
- Response times are good, but it still feels laggy. No Adaptive Sync / Gsync and only 60Hz. I'm not a snob but these would be very welcome.

On balance I think I would prefer an IPS panel over VA.

My 970 drives most games at 40 to 60fps at this resolution.

Personally banding does my head in. Just how bad is it?

It depends what you do with the monitor. It's something you'd really have to judge for yourself. I don't much like banding to be honest, but didn't find it particularly obnoxious on this monitor. I didn't really notice it when just browsing the internet, playing games or watching movies. I only noticed it on gradients specifically designed to highlight that kind of thing. Unless you're referring to 'banding' as in changes in colour saturation - which I feel some users might be. That is inherent to the panel type and unavoidable on something this wide.

When using display port on my 29um65, I could make out 254 square easily, however, the gradient looked AWFUL, it looked like a really bad paint job as in you could easily see the individual strokes :p Unfortunately it was also noticeable in a lot of content. When using HDMI, I can barely make out 254 square, however, there is virtually zero banding then.

I haven't tested the 29UM65 but that is odd. DisplayPort and HDMI on that sort of monitor shouldn't offer such a discrepancy. Were you using Firefox out of interest? And regardless of the connection used the gradient looks nothing like that on the Samsung, as noted in my review.

I notice it in the sky boxes of games (project CARS, witcher). How 'bad' it is subjective... really it's no massive issue, just irritating to see defects it in such an expensive screen.

For reference,

Brightness 45
Contrast 70
Sharpness 60
R 46
G 48
B 50
Gamma Mode 2
Response Time Standard
NVIDIA control panel Gamma 0.96

I should also note that when I first used the monitor the Inversion (pixel walk) test at lagom lcd-tests was showing some pretty severe flickering, but after 15 hours or so of use this has now settled down.

Considering if an extra £400 on top of the cost of this one is worth it for the upcoming Asus with g-sync, IPS and 75Hz .
