Samsung NC10

Well just picked mine up and in the process of setting up.

Looks like a lovely piece of kit. Have to say the white doesn't suit the rest of my black Samsung gear but ah well, got it a day early :p

Well it's on charge at the moment as per the instructions but here's a little teaser of her on charge.

Looks a lot smaller in real life. Very impressed with the size of the keyboard and the general build quality feels superb even better than the Acer Aspire One I had a fettle with last night :)

Definitely let us know your thoughts on build quality and screen quality compared to the Acer if possible!

Is it possible to take that big gold sticker off or is it one of those super sticky ones that will leave crap behind?

@ Rawlyn (and any other NC10 owners)

Could you give a rough idea of the noise levels, from the cooling fan and hard disk please?

Also, I would like to put XP pro on it...How would I do that without a CD drive? (I have an original CD and COA from an old lappy)

Cheers.

Well the unit as a whole feels more sturdy and just better built than the Acer. The way the screen is framed in the case is a lot better than on the Acer imo.

Yes the sticker does come off too :)

It's super quiet. You can hear the HDD a bit but it's very minimal. Fan sounds to be non existent! Not sure about XP Pro, probs require a USB CD Drive or a USB Stick/SD Card.

So far I'm really happy with it. Screen is very clear and easy to view and the keyboard is not much smaller than that of my Toshiba laptop.

The in built speakers are rather pitiful but headphones would be recommended and the HDD is partioned in to two parts. Not tested it much more than the Internet and MSN which the Samsung NC10 carries out very well.

Thanks for replying.

One more question if you would be so kind...

I know these are designed for low intensity tasks, but do you think it would run word and excel...and possibly even paintshop or photoshop?

Yeah it can run Word, Excel etc fine. Photoshop seems to run well enough too. Probs not ideal to use Photoshop on such a small screen anyway, but seems ok for touching up images etc.

Hows the quality of the audio output from he headphone socket?

I would rate the quality as average and VERY loud :D It's about as good as listening to it off an MP3 phone. But I have only been listening to the free music you get with WMP11 such as Highway Blues which is only 64Kbps, when I get some better quality stuff on I will let you know.

@ Rawlyn

can the hard drive be replaced with a bigger one

I assume it could be, however it is 160GB so it's not exactly small :p

Looks very nice Rawlyn :) Enjoy and let us know how you get on once fully charged :)

Battery life? Performance? Screen - viewing angles?

Not had chance to test the battery life yet but from what from tests and reviews have said you're looking at around 7+ hours on super energy save mode and around 6 on normal use, iirc.

It peforms as well as can be expected for the specs and it loads up rather quick and hasn't struggled so far. I might try and get a few games on it today or tommorow such as GTA 3 or San Andreas and see how she likes that ;)

The screen is really good. Deffo worth getting the 10.2" over an 8.9" as every little bit helps. The screen is fine sat on your lap and it tilts back to about 45 degree's.

It's also really really quiet too. Just a very small whuring sound from the fan and the odd HDD load. Very pleased with it I hve to say.

Rawlyn if you can could you please try TF2 please would be great playing that on train or bus with the nc10

Oh, and can someone confirm if the NC10 does or does not have a built in 3g modem?? I have seen the early reviews which show a 3g sim card slot behind the battery housing.

Would be great if it has it built in

Is there a visible panel somewhere that looks like it would hide the hard drive? Not really thinking about hard drive space, more about solid state drives :)

Clown, check out this video review. It is in Italian but opens up the entire laptop showing where ram/hdd etc is located - also mentions 3g modem again - confusing!:
