Samsung NC10

Im seriously thinking of getting one of these. I will stick 2GB of ram in it too. Are many of you running vista on one of these babys or sticking with XP?

I've seen quite a few videos on utube with Vista running on em and it seems to cope well if you have 2GB of ram.

ive got vista premium running with 2gb ram and its nice and smooth, about to install ultimate (when it arrives) as the trial period of my premium is gonna run out as i didnt activate :P
there are a few driver probs which can be sorted with a little searching for the correct drivers but hoping that samsung will release some as they showing the nc11 with vista

I tried Vista and had lots of problems with wifi - kept dropping connection after five minutes for no reason. Tried countless Atheros drivers - wondering if AV is playing havoc with connection and not the driver. Gone back to XP for time being...

I phoned Samsung this morning - they've given me the details of where to send it. I just need to phone DHL to arrange collection, which I'll do at lunchtime. Far better than forking out for postage myself, which may take 'the other firm' a while to refund, if they accept there's a fault etc.

Not sure how long the process will take, or whether or not they'll try to 'repair' it (I hope not, and I've put a note and the photo from this forum in the box to explain the problem - I've basically said "put a white background on and stand well back") ;-)

Back to my EeePC 701 for a while then!

Given the net prices and availability issues with these I bought one yesterday from a high street retailer and must say I am very impressed. The keyboard is excellent, battery life is astonishing - I was typing away in Word 07 in battery life mode (screen dimmed etc.) and it indicated 9 hours remaining! 3 hours later it still indicated over 5 hours left, battery at 65%. I've got no bltochy screen issues either. Trimmed down a few services that came preinstalled that I don't require but it is certainly not 'bloated' with preinstalled software. Thanks to whoever recommended two finger scroll, after disabling all of the scroll and iphone stylee 'pinch' options in the touchpad driver it works a treat. Also, after increasing the sensitivity a bit, I've already got used to the small trackpad and don't even notice it now.

This is the first laptop I've owned since 2003 and its amazing how far they've come!

Just reserved one of these badboys.....will hopefully be picking it up tonight. Can't wait!

Anyone played FM 2009 on it? Everything run ok? I'm a bit worried about the 3D match engine.....can anyone confirm it'll be ok?

Ive had my NC for about 20 days now and it has had the blotches on the screen since i bought it, I thought i could live with it but they annoy be immensely now and on anything with a white background - like a lot of websites they show up real good, almost like a ghost image of something behind the screen, they look like dirty fingerprints but wont clean off. Its a white one from a big PC superstore.

Well after getting thrown around between Samsung and the site I bought it from I decided to just return it for a full refund (as it's still under 28 days).

As soon as I request my money back, BAM, they couldn't be more helpful in setting up a replacement - the Parcel Force van is coming on Friday.

I'm still pretty skeptical after making numerous phonecalls and getting nowhere but we'll see...

I dont see why there should have been trouble, if the item is new your contract is with the seller; anyone who tells you you have to deal with the manufacturer is a liar and is breaking the law.

Yeah I know that, (DSR regs etc) but the seller will want me to arrange shipping back at my expense (for now) and there's that indeterminate period where their 'test centre' will determine if it's faulty (I want a replacement as the price I paid is a lot less than you can get it for now). They may just boot it up and not see the 'black eyes' and say there's nothing wrong..

Far better in my case to get Samsung to pick it up for free (which UPS did this afternoon), and I don't have to try and arrange couriers etc

Of course, I'll be whinging away if the service centre Samsung use in Telford faff me around, but so far the service is excellent. I'm fully expecting them to send me a new blotch free one, as mine's unrepairable (unless they change the lid, in which case, they can tighten up the hinge while they're at it - I'm used to my EeePC where you could wave the base of the unit frantically and the lid part wouldn't move at all - it's that rigid - not that I do it regularly you understand ;-)

Bought a black NC10 from the high street about 3 weeks ago and it also had the 2 blotches on the screen. Didn't notice them at first until I saw smilertoo's post and because I was so impressed with the rest of the netbook I too thought I could live it. Especially as it is only really noticeable on a pure white screen when the brightness is set from 1 to 5. Also found differing room lighting effected it's visibility.

However, after a few more days they really started to bug me, probably because you know they are there and you tend to look for them. As smilertoo sent his off for replacement I decided to take mine back to the store. After the manager and about half the staff spent 20 minutes squinting at the screen and me insisting I wanted it exchanged, they agreed to give me a replacement as I had returned it within 28 days. I also got a refund of about £7 due to the VAT change.

The screen on my replacement one is perfect and has the blue F7 & F8 keys. The label on the cardboard accessory box says version 1.1 whereas my original said version 1.0 . Apart from the blue keys I can see no other difference between them and both have the Fujitsu hard disk, which even though it seems cool running and quiet enough, I would probably have chosen the Toshiba or Hitachi one.

Being a bit picky, I would have liked the screen hinges to be a slightly stronger as they may wear a little loose and when you pick it up by the keyboard edges the chassis does creak a bit. Also the display does not seem that well protected because even a small amount of pressure on the back causes the display to ripple and I would have concerns about carrying this about allday in a bag.

I would suggest that you write down the windows serial number off the label on the bottom as the print is starting to wear off mine.

Looks like the blotch problem is fairly common.

Mine that I sent back to Samsung today had the blue keys on top too, so it must be a newer version - obviously no guarantee of blotch free though. I wonder what the issue is? There's a post from a month ago on a US forum complaining about the same issue, so it must be an intermittent problem (or some happen to be manufactured with screens from a dodgy source).

The main reason I didn't want to return it at my expense and hassle to P*** is that even if they did accept it as a faulty, they'd probably just send me a new unopened one - chances are that'd have blotches too!

You're right though, once you know it's there you look for it, and can't live with it. I didn't notice at all for a couple of days, and almost said "sod it. I can live with it", but it's by far the worst screen blemish I've seen in years of using LCDs - usually light bleeds/clouding are near the corners and you sort of accept them, but this is right in the hotzone, and it's odd in that it's darker..

Also, who has their brightness above 2? That's more than enough for me!

Just a quick update - Really pleased with mine (£293.60 collected!), no blotches as of yet! Although by the sounds of them, they tend to appear later on....I have the 1.1 version with the blue keys

Football Manager runs no problems, but you have to hack the shortcut to run it in a smaller window
