Samsung NC10

TheDean: no, the 2 blotches are there as soon as you turn it on, open a full screen explorer window and look in the bottom left quarter of the screen, if you have them you'll see them.

Well, the Samsung service online update website for my blotchy NC10 (sent back yesterday) was updated earlier today with "Repair Cancelled", and it now says "Repair Complete". I'm assuming that means that they know the screen is buggered and are going to send me a new one.

Hopefully I'll get it soon, and if it's blotch-free, going direct to Samsung would seem to be the way to go. Of course, if they just send back the same one with blotches then it's refund time!

Well I swapped mine over at the big electrical retail store today, took some convincing the staff, their black display model had the 2 "eyes" on the screen in the same place! theyre usually above f4 and f7 a third of the way up the screen, mine also had a thirdeye way over to the right. They unboxed a new white one for me still 1.1 version as mine without the 2 blue f keys and it was much better, one can still be seen very very faintly if you look but far better than before and certainly dont show up on say googles page where was before they were staring me in the face.

@ techno12 Yes it does seem that the blotch problem is fairly common however they must be selling 1000's of them so the percentage is probably quite low. Apart from smilertoo's suggestion of the retailer performing a quick test, I don't think there is anyway of guaranteeing a perfect screen as people on here are reporting faulty ones from several retailers, with different colour cases and the blue F Key version.

I have no idea what causes it, maybe a shadow from a component or bracing or blob of glue in the lid? According to the monitor driver in Device Manager, both my faulty one and my replacement one had a CPT04C4 screen (Chunghwa Picture Tubes ).

It's a shame as this problem is detracting from an otherwise excellent product.

it looks like a pressure mark, i bet they thought i did it. About 4 members of staff looked at it waving it around and all differnt angles and light sources saying oo i cant see anything wrong,i had removed all my data and icons and left it on a white background at 50% brightness. When we looked at the disply model and it looked the same the guy tried to fob me off with well its a cheap laptop so the quality is cheap and that how the lcds are. I put the advent 4211 next to it on a white background which has the same size screen and that was perfect. So we got a new boxed one and tried that and luckily its far better. I knew my rights and i know about laptops as i fix them for a living for said large electrical retailer.

Picked up my Sammy the other day and put a few apps on it and checked it worked ok, now back in box ready for crimbo. Picked up 2GB Crucial for it for £17 and got the Intel 5300 inbound from China for $20 (snipering on eBay 4tw!).

I've also got the two darker patches on mine. They don't look as bad as some, so I am still pondering whether to take the risk of sending it back to Samsung.

I phoned Samsung today to find out the turnaround etc, and they were very keen to point out that this could be due to the design (components behind the screen etc.) and if their repair department didn't consider it a manufacturing fault but just due to the design then I would be charged for checking & returning it! :(

So I don't know if they're trying to put people off due to a number of returns, but it makes me wonder what I'd get back - anyone else had one back from the repairs company that Samsung use?

Now you've got me worried!

I'll go spare if they try to charge me - I told the guy on the phone that it needed replacing, as it's an unrepairable fault, but the instructions I was given was to send it to Digicare in Telford anyway.

I'm currently waiting for mine to return - it is a horrendous fault, if you stand say 10 feet away it's ridiculoulsly obvious to anyone, and not acceptable.

The company i work for uses Digicare for spares and repairs and they are very good in both service and turnaround times (if they have the spares). It's standard protocol to mention the repair as being chargable if the problem is not a manufacturing fault but i wouldn't worry too much.
