Samsung NC10

OK guys so I have done it, I plucked up the courage to purchase one of these little things. It should arrive Monday, it cost me £288 all together which i think is a reasonable price.

I am going to follow Rob's advice and uninstall Mcafee and Adobe as well as the Microsoft components.

I will go for Mozilla Firefox, is it worth doing the Firefox hacks to make it run faster?

Also what Anti Virus software should I go for?

I am going to install Macromedia Dreamweaver too its only for editing not for full coding and design so is it worth sticking with notepad or going for something open source?

What music player should I use, I realise I tunes can be very demanding so is there something else which would be better?

Also what instant messaging service is best to use for MSN which version?

Thanks guys.

can you mail me mate, jimmy.little @ gmail com, just wanted to ask you some info on th nc10

ok thinking of getting one of these this week, i keep umming and arrrrring...

gonna try and read through this thread... but in the mean time,

how do people find Vista running on this? as that's my issue, i don't really wanna buy any device that runs xp, as i'm quite into vista and windows 7...

so how do people find it?

I've heard that Windows 7 runs quite well on these, and netbooks in general. I'm running XP on mine as it does everything I need as a secondary machine.

I was torn between the NC10 and the ASUS EeePC 1000 series but I'm glad I went with the NC10 now as the keyboard is much better and it looks really nice, subtle things like the power button on the hinge and lights on the front add to this.

_Jimlad_ if you want any pics of certain things I'll happily provide them.

thanks mate, i have a laptop so would be using this a 3rd pc many for lugging around with me and use at the gym.... it's just the parting with the money!

Had one of these little beauties delivered this morning after dithering over whether to get one for some time and I don't regret it for a minute, it's a fabulous machine.

The only "complaint" is as others have said - the touchpad is a bit small and I'd prefer to have 2 separate mouse buttons rather than the rocker style switch on the NC10.

Keyboard is great and very easy to type on.

With 47% of the battery left (it came with some charge in it), it thinks there is another 3 1/2 hours left!

:)

Use at the gym??? Do you work there?

i know it sounds strange, but i have a epc from work and take it to the gym, watch lost, 24, heroes and so on with headphones on, stick on a bike or cross trainer and the mini pc just sit on the ledge, good way to burn 700kals without getting bored............however i'm aware i look like a gumbo :p

The pad is'nt to bad if you get rid of the fancy scrolling feature and just make it a plain touchpad and bump the sensitivity up a notch.

running xp and win 7 but prefer xp in classic mode.

areo is nice but i don't really need it would be nicer on my desktop though which has more cpu power

Yeah I found the trackpad a little small to start with, I kept triggering the scrolling accidently. If you disable the scroll feature and download the two finger scroll tool it makes it a lot better as you can use all of the trackpad.

Just ordered a black one seeing as the Dell Mini 10 pricing has gone stupid.

I've also ordered a 2GB stick (£17) as I intend to run Windows 7 and an Intel 5300 WiFi card (£15.50) as lack of 802.11n is one of the few things that lets the Samsung down vs some of the other netbooks.

Just completed a clean install of XP onto mine, but can't seem to get some of the keyboard shortcuts working again even though the Magic Keyboard application has been put back on.

Some keys work (CPU speed), but others (wireless, brightness) aren't and there doesn't seem to be an easy way to reset them up (hardly any options in the keyboard app).

Samsung Drivers installed?

Sorry if im being obtuse, but what is the benefit of having this over the OEM wifi card?

It supports 802.11n which is faster than G if you have routers/access points that support wireless N. It's not really worth it unless you specifically need the increased speed/range offered by wireless N, it's unlikely that you're going to exceed the bandwidth just by using your broadband.

Thanks, so N>G but not noticeable due browsing the web as wireless bandwidth is not the constraint, the isp connection is? :)
