Samsung Targets Gamers With 3 Extremely Fast 990 Pro NVMe SSDs

Something that is weird is you can't run the SMART scan using Magician, I've tried previously and it pulls up an error saying the driver is out of date but if you try to install the Samsung Nvme drive from the Samsung website it says the driver doesn't support the 990 Pro

So based on this logic, the 990 pro is running the latest firmware and drivers but also the 990 pro an un-supported drive

Did you read the thread lol?

Yeah the Samsung NVMe driver only supports up to 970 series IIRC, I had it installed but it ignores itself with the 990 Pro and Windows uses the Microsoft driver instead which is verified by Samsung Magician. All functions work though just not the 2 extended SMART test, not that it matters since the standard SMART results are the same in Magician as they are with all other drive tools that show SMART data.

Just to update, mine has dropped from 100% to 98% overnight with still just under 3TB total writes.

Hardly used the PC the last few days except for playing already installed games.

Compared to my 850 Pro 1TB which has ~14,000 power on hours and 32TB writes sitting at 99%!

Yup looks like you are having the same issue with yours too. This is going to become a thing with this drive I have a gut feeling :/

Out of interest is yours a boot drive? I have a feeling the health percentage drops faster when it's used as a boot drive

Hanaro have just got back to me having seen the publicity about this now. They wished to RMA it again and this time A) Replace the drive, and B) Get more info to try replicate the issue.

Well A isn't happening as it's been returned for refund and now sitting with Samsung sales/returns, I got no reply after a full week so I wasn't losing the refund window. For B I have provided as much info as possible inc msinfo32 exports and apps installed exports etc so they can use test drives they no doubt have in-house.

More people have commented here and there about having the same issue since they have checked after reading the article. Whilst others have no issue. It's evident that it may well be batch related, but that batch spans all markets it seems!

Only option really, reference the neowin link to them too just so they are extra aware that they're probably about to get a bunch of RMAs about this.

Just to check - is there anyone here whose 990 Pro does not have this issue? Cause if it's happening on all drives then I may as well get a refund
