Scariest ''level'' in a video game

I bought Penumbra, tried it, did a little poop and stopped.

Agreed, Doom 3 certainly had its moments early on in the game!

It has to be any of the AvP games playing as a Marine. As soon as that Motion Tracker kicks in

Dead space has been the scariest game for me. Its something to do with it being 3rd person and if Isaac gets torn to pieces I see it, I think I spent most of my first playthrough up on aim.
If it had been first person + easy to maneover it just wouldn't be as scary.

Brilliant.
AVP, cant remember if it was first or second game. I remember playing first 2 or 3 areas as marine and although encountering almost no enemy's, I was absolutely bricking it lol. Xeno Tracker + Scary Music + Dark + random scenery breaking etc... =

Amnesia, Dark Decent is the scariest game i've ever played and i've played them all. RE5, all the fears, both bioshocks, both deadspaces. For the rest of the scary games, you have GUNS, Amnesia you have a god damn lantern and that's it!!

Only played about an hour of Amnesia, made me feel more ill than scared with all the vision distortion.

For individual levels I was actually kinda scared playing through Ravenholm in Half Life 2. Dead Space and Resident Evil 1/2 also deserve a mention.
The spider level in LIMBO creeped me out, although it was just that. Creepy, but not terrifying, although I suppose an arachnophobe would have a different opinion. Some bits in Bioshock were scary, mostly when you could hear that a splicer was nearby but nowhere to be seen. When they did finally attack you it just turns out to be standard FPS fare. Dead Space bored the hell out of me, jumpy horror just doesn't work on me any more. Now, Amnesia on the other hand... I played about 3 hours of it and haven't come back to it since, the atmosphere is so well executed. I remember there being moments where I had to psyche myself up thinking I was a badass when suddenly the game changes something in an area you were sure was safe last time you went through it, it really puts you in your place when you start feeling cocky.
