The Scottish hate us. I love the Scottish, my father is Glaswegian my family are glaswegian.. I dont know why they have a problem with us English.

Its a shame, they are a great people and we share such riches in heritage and history. Its also a very beautiful country to visit. I think Scotland seeking independence from England as Britain would be bad for all concerned.

Thats not the case - there are a minority of Scots who moan loudly but I believe there are as many english feel the same way.

Reading this thread it seems the other way round to be honest. Loads more English people saying "let those peasants have independence so they stop stealing our money" etc.

Born in Scotland, lived in Scotland my whole life, consider myself Scottish over British. Independence? No thanks. If it aint broke, don't fix it.

this is largely due to racialism agianst the English... I remember being taught in schools that the english where bad.

You were? I don't remember anything like that, at least not from teachers but then it doesn't take too much to work out that there are good and bad in every nation.

Scots also talk about why do they have their main parliment in London as this has no intrests for the scots! Hang on most of the labour govenment are scotish including tony blair!

The actual location of a politicians birth doesn't automatically mean that they have the best interests of that country at heart or even that they can afford to because (rightly since it is the largest part of the union) most of the MPs in Westminster are English so they aren't entirely likely to favour policies that do not benefit their constituents. I don't know whether or not Scotland is favoured or not in Westminster, it might be but I've got little interest in trawling through Hansard in the hopes of finding something one way or the other especially as if there are deals being done they are unlikely to ever be mentioned in a written tome such as that.

Anyway Scotland cant have independance... centarys ago they basicly "sold" themselfs to the english. Go read your history!

I've read enough to know what happened, the Scottish nobles did sign the Act of Union because Scotland was essentially bankrupt (after a failed attempt to colonise Panama) and they did receive 'bribes' but I don't see why that means that Scotland could not gain independence.

As I've said I am not particularly in favour of independence but I'm not sure as an argument against independence that is very strong.

Well Scotland is a small country like Ireland, and Ireland is in the top 3 richest countries in the world (I think it's second in Europe). Why can't Scotland follow in Ireland's footsteps?

Nobody's really put forward a good argument other than:
a. the Euro
b. because we'd miss our English friends
c. because Brussels would take over.

I think Scotland could make it on its own.

I would have agreed with you, I been going over to the Rep of Ireland for 10 years now, back the day Ireland was way behind the UK in terms of living. Ireland was counted as a 3rd world country when it joined the EU, it literally got millions from the the EU poured into it, coupled with an extremely well put government that sold Ireland to the world for tourism, plus an influx of immagrants from Eastern Europe and further fuelled to fill the lower end job market has made into a better place to live than here in the UK. Although the influx of immagrants has caused a huge divide same as here about jobs being taken etc and cultural divides.

I dont think Scotland would get the grants and millions that Ireland got, so I dont think we could do as well as the Irish, although suggested already we base our Economy on the Irish model, this was sidelinded for above reasons.

For independence, but the first few decades would be a nightmare.

No, there would be no border check point controls.

Customs checks at internal EU borders are illegal, and even passport controls have gone on most frontiers.

Even though I'm an Englishman I'm all for Scottish Independence.

I'd like to see an all English only Parliament and we get to look after our own affairs, and the Scots theirs.
Exactly my thoughts. They should be independent but still share common interests.

It wont happen in this SP term, the SNP know this. They would need a majority of the house so to speak to get a referendum for indepenence. No other party is interested in this, so in a way this debate is already dead.

I think a lot of people up here was just sending a message to Blair and Brown, your days at No.10 are up and counting. I think cameron will storm it down there come next election, unless Brown pulls out a wonder vote winner hit amongst the general public (doubtful). We all are being taxed to the hilt and with the Bank of England putting up interest rates again isnt helping to curb us from spending as much, due to our massive personal debt.

nice to meet you Jokester! I'm from very close to Stonehaven, glad to another Aberdeenshire lad :)

I am very schocked at some of the anti-Scottish stuff posted in here, i.e. regarding us being a "financial burden" to "you English". This is simple not the case, as stated last year we posted a net gain to the UK economy.

I am Scottish and fully support indepence, IF I am sure Scotland will not suffer economically - which from what I've seen it won't. Obviously I wouldn't vote to destroy my country but a lot of English people miss a point completely (especially the guys saying only Bigot, pride-filled neds vote SNP).

Freedom is something of such high importance to the Scots, many of us (51% at last poll ;) ) yearn to be a country again. We have been trapped in chains by a 300 year old union that does us no favors. Our country has suffered without proper government, and even devolution can't fix the whole problem.

I live for the day when I can stand outside Hollyrood in my kilt, with my brothers and father and watch as Scotland signs the 2012 declaration of independence. Freedom is not something that neds vote for, it's something that Scottish people have the right to.

About 30 years ago it might of been a good idea with all that oil in the North Sea, but now it would be a very very bad idea.

Don't talk about this in the same thread as a 4th year Geologist about to work in the field of Petroleum Geology in Aberdeen!!!!!!!!!!

This is utter RUBBISH. Scotland still has - and note i said scotland not the North Sea - 3/4 of all of Europe's hydrocarbon supplies out there. There are many reservoirs that are still very producable for many decades, and more oil to be found. Many reservoirs are depleted in the "main body" but still have plentiful hydrocarbons in hard to reach places, that until now have not been economical to produce (i won't go into details unless you wish...).

And to top this off, with Scotland's huge potential to generate around 3/4 of our energy by renewable sources, we have a lot of oil to export...

Voted Lib Dem this election, i support the majority of SNP policies but this independence referendum is a farce. Luckily the SNP have 0 chance of forming a coalition due to refusing to drop the referendum and thus have 0 chance of getting it voted through. Lib Dem and Labour would outnumber them on it.

This is the real loss of the election... Scottish people have decided on their government, and they have chosen the SNP... ALONG WITH a referendum on independence. The fact that the Lib Dems refuse coalition on this matter is peeing in the face of all Scotland who have voted to get to this point.

We have decided, and the latest polls show a 51% favor to independence, yet the foolish lib dems won't budge - i say screw em, they will find themselves bummed come next election.
