SETI@home News Vol. 112 (08/08/2010)

well it obviously never installed properly :( damn it gotta do it all again brb :p

Re downloaded and reinstalled the app now no error just waiting for some work now but should all be working fine once it does :D

EDIT: Right now the GPU's are not working it's doing 2 tasks at a time but it finishes 1 and then not the other just uploads both with out finishing the second one :confused: gonna double check app_info

Nice tiffy TT, postie popped by here too :)

Ive been meaning to get a bigger case for a while now. So this week i bought myself a corsair 700D, swapping all the bits over was straight forward enough, ive had a xspc 5-1/4 bay res for a while, (one of the ones where you mount the pump directly under) which would never fit in my old case so this was fitted along with a new pump. I gotta say i i like the idea of having the pump under bay res, its neater. I fired it all up and was instantly greated to instability problems, i traced this to the PSU and bougt a new one, i got seduced by a corsair ax750. Fitted it and it was all working fine, i was watching a film downstairs which was streaming off my main rig when it froze, i went upstairs to see what the problem was and i saw bright yellow water all over the place, the pipe off the cpu cooler had come off its barb spraying water all over the inside of the computer :( This is now the third time i have totally soaked my computer, you would think i would have learned my lesson by now. Left it over night, got the hair dryer out and fired it up......... it all worked. :)

Sorry for rambling but im just happy i can type this without it crashing or getting my feet wet! ont my question, it would be a shame not to make use of the extra space in the case by not getting another GPU when i can afford it. I currenbtly have a 280 gtx, can i add a 470 to it and get them both to work together in games and seti?

First things first.......

You're a bit mad......soaking your PC three time via watercooling - once should be enough.

Anyways: As to your question - Using a GTX470 as your main card and the GTX280 for Physx they should work fine together. Then you would have to create a cc_onfig.xml file and place it in the Boinc application data file:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC (for XP)

It should look like this:

<cc_config>
<options>
<use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>
</options>
</cc_config>

Everything should work fine and dandy - but you will have to use the stock GPU apps for SETI as the Fermi cards can't use the Lunatics apps (but non Fermi Cards i.e. GTS250, GTX260, GTX 275 etc etc can still crunch using the Fermi Stock Apps).

Sorry to here of your woes - good that it all came good(ish) in the end. There is a way of running Fermi and non-Fermi hardware, although it is a bit tricky to set up (it involves installing to a temp directory, copying files/apps and editing app_info.xml). I don't think Marine managed it yet (I'm sure he will keep going 'till he gets it going), but there is a thread over on S@H with the details.

As for games, since I don't play them I wouldn't like to comment...... ;)

My solution above works fine.......been using it for ages.

If you wish to use the CPU Lunatics apps I would be happy to share the app_info.xml details.

Will need a little altering to match whichever of the Lunatics Apps you wish to use - but nothing too complicated.

Oh......forgot to mention - have it working with rescheduler too (not that it matters now as all the VLAR's are in the process of being removed from the GPU work load).

Thanks for the replies guys.

I am a little too eager to get things up and running.... Not all the leaks have been on the same computer i hasten to add, and one of them was a component failure.

Thanks for the heads up on the gpu, there is no way I can smuggle another computer box into the house without getting caught, so this will have to wait for a while but at least i now know it will (hopefully) work.

Hey Toxic......

If I get a Fractal Design R2 - transfer my current rig to it - do you still want the Nvidia Coolermaster Stacker 830?

And do you still have the spare 800D?

If so - ping me an email......

:)
