If people don't move away from twitter, it will always be the most popular platform. If you believe Musk is a far right fascist I find it strange you would continue to use his platform which directly supports him. Deleting your twitter account is easy and it sends the small message that you won't accept a fascist. Millions of other people doing the same sends a big message.

X isn't just about Musk though, it has a lot of users. Most of these big tech guys are dodgy, should we stop using everything?

I may be completely wrong as I haven't used it, but I get the impression Bluesky is just going to be an anti-X echo chamber...

Both Twitter and Blue Sky are echo chambers, just that Twitter represents the right and Blue Sky represents the left. I would be happy to ban both in all areas of OcUK except for SC which is the politics sub-forum.
If a change is needed then this is the perfect solution I believe. Removing one without the other just leads us down to a different flavour of what we are trying to avoid.

There are tons of resources on Twitter which aren't political - one of the reasons I'm critical of the way Twitter has changed under Musk i.e. in previous times it was very useful when significant events like natural disasters happened for people being able to get information, link up with loved ones or those who could help, etc. etc. without necessarily having to worry about logging into accounts and so on and without things like promoted results drowning out the actual useful information.

So shame on Musk in that respect as nothing has really replaced it for that.

I never liked the twitter embeds, huge dimensions makes it a pita when using a phone, and the web page performance is pants for the negligible value.
The content itself is extremely low value, like 95% fake/bias trash sort of level, it doesn't make the forum better.

Ban all social media platforms which require a login to view.
I'd like that to include any news site with a paywall. Nobody likes clicking a link and getting hassled to subscribe instead of the content they expected.

Would that include links to newspaper articles that require a subscription or only offer x "free" articles to people.

AFAIK (w.r.t the thread topic) twitter doesn't require a login to view a tweet embedded in a forum post.

as said, by throwayay links to newspaper articles don't take up a lot of thread space, or time to render, are not a big t***/spam that gets inserted again if it is replied on, creating a large discontinuity for reading anything.

Xembeds showing a tweet without needing a login are part of X/Musks business model - free advertising space(no license fee for OC I assume)

Not quite, there was an exodus to BlueSky that has tilted that platform to the left after it initially started out for a brief few days as a fairly neutral space for tech enthusiasts, rationalists etc.

But twitter/x.com is very broad and quite evenly split in terms of left:right.

I still think the fundamental point w.r.t this thread is that OCUK already has it's own rules re: acceptable content, people can't just embed anything in a post on here just because it's on twitter ergo there isn't really much of an issue here.

Edit: I've voted no in the poll, however I would vote yes if it were all social media that's banned from the forum.

The forum itself is "social media" - so would that mean any link to another forum should be banned?

Should YouTube videos be banned? YouTube is social media too.

It was a Nazi salute though.

Whether it was a salute to the Nazis or Nazism is a whole other leap however.

I would be happy too if all social media platforms like twitter, meta and bluesky was banned too but don’t let perfect be the enemy of good by voting no.

I'm on Twitter/X and Bluesky.

Let market forces naturally decide what happens instead of going full fascist.

This. Both are utter echo chambers. I don't want OCUK to become the same, we need to keep discussion - do not ban links, let people decide, like adults.

IMHO banning links is ironically exactly the supposed justification for doing so - facist.

I've unlocked this because I want the discussion on whether Twitter / X should be allowed to continue.

The subject is not about Elon Musk, there's a separate thread in SC for that.

Keep it on topic.

Forums were around before the creation of the algorithmic social media sites. Nothing even social about them anymore, nobody actually discusses or 'socialises', it's all just non-stop sound bites from one side or the other side. They are battlefields.

Not having those battlefields dragged into our wonderful forum is a good thing.

lol this is the oddest censorship by the mods to date. People are saying they want to ban Twitter because <of what has happened recently>

I was initially no, but this thread has prompted me to delete mine and now vote yes, but screenshots should be allowed.
