Show us your kitty cats

Update on my search for a kitty: every single breeder I've tried on http://www.pets4homes.co.uk/ have already sold all their litters. They just don't seem to want to take the adverts down. A lot of them have waiting lists :(

Need to try somewhere else. Gumtree was mentioned; I'll check it out but will be wary of backyard breeders due to the kind of site Gumtree is (ie scamtastic).

[edit: that was quick. Nothing within 150 miles on gumtree (300 mile round trip).]

Oh I see. No, I was talking about pedigree Burmese, Tonkinese, Snowshoe, Singapura, etc. I can get a moggy from the same town I live in :)

With a breeder you know your kitty will have been socialised during the critical 2-7 week period. They will have been handled from a very early age, and view people as cats :p They are more likely to be people cats. They will know exactly how much inbreeding there has been. They hopefully will have had health checks, been wormed, litter trained, etc, etc.

That's why you pay £500 and not £10 :p You average Joe whose cat has just had kittens probably didn't even intend to have kittens! They could have any number of health problems, FeLV, etc. Huge risk.

Yep mine are just what you described, except the mother was knocked up by a random tabby Tom (I can see tabby stripes in our boy). It is a risk, but I've effectively rescued these kittens. We've had them since 8 weeks old and they have been glued to me since. My toilet photo is testament to that :p

I hope something comes up that is suitable for you soon. Could there be any chance that you might change your mind and take on a poor homeless moggie? :( :p

Depends what you mean by decent. There are lots. Mine get natures menu and encore, both of which are 60% meat/fish :)

Well I want something with a higher meat content to help keep him happy and try to deter him going next door :)

Yup there's every chance of that happening. I intend to make contact with both local shelters this week and book in some time to go play with their pussies ;)

Sooo.... been looking on zooplus at work to find some kitty stuffs :p A couple of cat trees looked decent but wanted some input really (budget for a tree is £150):

We found out today that Puddle (the female) has been hacking at our faux leather bed stand. Torn to shreds it is. Annoyingly she doesn't use the scratching post, like Felix does, I bought weeks ago. Luckily the bed isn't really that expensive but it's still annoying. She hasn't gone near the £1000 sofa thankfully.

Meh. My divan, sofas etc are all marked from kitty claws etc. There isn't much you can do, this is just part of pet ownership. You can tell them not to etc when you are home but soon as you go out you know they are going to go straight for it.

I recently bought some B&W floorstanding speakers and the grills are the full length of the speaker, making a great looking scratching post. As much as I an aloof with it all I am waiting for the day they use them as a scratching post. Probably won't be so understanding then :P

I get most of my high meat content wet food from Zooplus, I don't feed any dry at all. The brands I get from Zooplus are: Animonda Carny, Bozita, Cosma, Lily's Kitchen. Alomo Nature is good too and Smilla, gonna try them soon. There is also the Happy Kitty Company with 4 brands, Om Nom Nom and Granatapet are better imo than Ropocat and Mac but there all better than whiskas and felix.

You could also look at raw food and for that I use Nutriment, but there is also Natural Instincts and Natures Menu.

Our cat (Archie) is pretty good for scratching but sometimes can't resist the temptation of the bottom step of the stairs. When we had the stairs re-carpeted, I built a wooden box and covered that in an off-cut. That lives in the kitchen and he loves having a right thrash at that (it looks very second hand now!). It lives next to a radiator, so once the heating comes on in winter he often goes to sleep on it, all toasty

Any chance you can give a rough idea of how much you spend per month on food?

I'd really like to know how much I need to budget for this.

What are people finding to be the best flea treatment? We spotted a flea on Barry a while back, treated him, treated her, treated the entire house but now they're back. I'm using Acclaim spray on carpets, beds and rugs. Just need a decent cat pill/drops and break this damn cycle!

Thats for information. Going to get some order...now decisions decisions.

here ;) Can't get any meatier

For my 2 it tends to be around £40-50 per month, but thats with a mixture of good wet and dry food and some Felix for Snoopy (she wont touch anything else fussy mare)

I order from Zooplus and its worth getting the membership where you save 5% on each order as that usually covers DPD delivery (other option is yodel...lol). They also have special offers and deals etc

Edit: if you decide to use Zooplus can you give me a shout? We both benifit from the refer a friend scheme that they have (discounts me thinks :) )

FoxEye - I have 2 Maine Cooon boys of 9months and they eat a lot!! So I spend around £80 a month but that can go down a bit if I don't get the raw meat as it is quite expensive. But then they eat around 400-500g of food a day each!! I would think which ever breed you go for would be far less than this. And my boys are still growing and will do for 4 more years gulp!!

Captain Planet - Yes you can do your own raw diet but you have to read up on all the nutrients etc to add. Giving just raw chicken or meat on its own is not good, they need the extra nutrients etc. There are some great sites though on the different levels of raw meat you can do.
