Show us your kitty cats

So regarding the start cat my friend has adopted (found out from the neighbours who told her about her that the owners left her behind when they moved, as they left she was chasing their car down the street...I seriously hate people)

Anyway she's been reading online and doesn't like he sound of cat food now and would like to move her to raw food.

I have seen beef heart is meant to be good, along with liver but also that they should be eating bone too. What kind of bone could a catch manage beyond sort of game hen or small chicken bone?

Also with raw fish is the skin and small bones in them OK?

Such a sad image :(

I wonder about putting Luna on a raw meat diet, or perhaps a part raw meat, but know nothing about what she should get.

Yeep I don't understand how you could do it. Vets reckon she's about 5-6 now and the neighbours said she's spent the last 4 years stray.

She doesn't see fussy with regards to food.

Also today is the first day I get to sleep her she sleeps all day and is up all night and given I haven't slept since I finished my shift at 6am today that needs today I get a cuddle buddy for my nap ^_^

From what I've read, the main thing is not to give them cooked bones, which can splinter.

If you think about it, cats and other carnivores would naturally encounter uncooked bones in most of their prey.

But I don't feed raw, so I can't talk from experience.

We've read the same things... most cat food is not only some of the poorest quality meat, it's also so loaded with sugar, that it turns them into little sugar addicts.

We tried it & persisted for a good few months, but it wasn't working - so we're back on normal-ish cat food for them. Only one of our little ones really took to it.

Good luck :)

I don't get how anyone can do that... :(

Our guys go out and catch mice once in a while... the only bits they leave behind are the intestines/stomach...

one of mine used to catch mice and eat them, one morning my flat mate said he opened the door to a murder scene as there was blood everywhere... apparently she was eating one and had another live one under her paw, i guess that one was going to be pudding, glad i wasnt home :)

When I lived at home you could wake in the night to hear one of the family cats crunching on a mouse. And like you say the only bit left was some sort of organ.

Sorry for your loss Jumpy.
I lost my cat 2.5 years ago and it hurt like hell.
I've not had any deaths in my immediate family, so this is the first time, I'd suffered a loss to a close one.

It gets easier with time and as long as he lived a good life, while he was alive, that's all that counts.

How old was he?

The vets seemed to think he was about 14.
But given various timespans, I think he was 15 going on 16. I had him from a kitten - except for when he went missing for 6 months when he was ~3 years old. That's when his eye was damaged and had to be removed.

Got up morning to find Bella had destroyed my computer's on/off button :p I now have to touch two exposed wires together to turn it on.

I think she's trying to tell me something.

Just thinking if they need organs/offal cause they would normally eat a mix of everything not just meat/flesh

Avoid liver, too much Vitamin A I believe

All in all this week has been kind of rubbish; though returning home to an empty house on monday and tuesday were the worst.

I guess it only really hits home how much of a part of your daily experience your animals can be when they're not with you any more. I caught myself looking out of the corner of my eye when I was making a cup of tea yesterday, expecting to see him sat in the kitchen doorway next to his food bowl with an expectant gleam in his eye.

I feel a bit guilty that I wasn't able to do more for him, but I know that's just part of what happened.

Yeah you do that don't you you think you see a movement out of the corner of your eye or think you hear a sound and look down but theres nothing there but empty space. i did that for years afterwards.

Oh and the guilt. Yep been there too. :(

Bones are fine from chickens and I often throw them a meaty beef bone to gnaw on too. It's great for their teeth and their jaws, plus the marrow is good for diet. I would advise that dishing up bones is always supervised though - just in case. As already said, never cooked, absolutely must not be cooked.

Avoid fish, fish is not actually natural to a cats diet, and fish bones I wouldn't give them either. Stick to chicken, rabbit, beef & lamb. Do not feed them pork.

As for offal, up to 10% of their meal weight should be made up of heart, liver and/or kidney. The main requirement for cats in that is Taurine. You can also throw in Felini additive. They won't get all their nutrients from chicken breast and steak alone otherwise.

Source your meat from a known place - i.e. a decent clean butchers. I wouldn't feed them factory processed chicken. Beef and Lamb I'm a little less concerned about due to production methods. Chicken though I always insist on from the butcher.

Tell your friend not to be scared of feeding her cat raw. Humans are much less capable of digesting raw food and our education of having to cook meat thoroughly means it is scary feeding cats raw. Some same rules do apply though - clean prep surfaces, clean hands, correct food handling/refrigeration etc.

Lots of good info here and the rest of that site.
