Hi cat people.

My wife wants to get a cat for our daughter as she loves them and has been desperate to have a larger pet for ages.

We've recently moved house to a quiet area with a big garden, but it's 250m from a busy A road and the shelters seem to be refusing to re-home cats to our post code.

I'm a bit surprised as I'd assumed they'd all be desperate to home cats with someone like us with a garden like ours, which by the way has an acre of field off the back of it (not ours, but part owned by us).

Would you have any advice on where we can find cats that - and sorry to be mercenary about it - aren't nightmares and don't cost £500?

Some of these places are saying we can only have an 'indoor cat', which I don't get either as if we get an 'indoor cat' and let it go outside, it presumably very quickly becomes an 'outdoor cat'.

Not sure the shape of your garden, but have you considered special fencing that goes around the tops of your walls and fences? They are designed to stop cats from climbing out and doing a runner. We have 4 bengals (which are notorious for climbing and jumping out(basically, they are feline Steve Mqueens)
e.g R2b0R7f.jpg

So we used these guys https://felisafe.co.uk/ as we wanted them to enjoy the garden(greatly improves their confidence and "territory" without us getting too worried and also allow us to leave the conservatory door open in the summer. The other option is to make a catio so they can have indoor/outdoor living. One other task you'll need to do is make sure every plant in your garden is safe for cats as there seems to be lot of plants that will harm or even kill your kitty.

Major panic on last night. Cleo got out around 5pm and 2 hours later there was no sign of her. Gave it another hour and still no sign of her so off I went to search for her while calling her name. I was starting to panic at this point as this is completely out of character for her. I went out again at 10pm and when I called her name down the bottom of our garden I thought I heard her cry but couldn't be sure as it was blowing a gale. I thoroughly checked the garden as well as all of my neighbours but couldn't find her so went up the road to see if she was around there as that's where they can gain access to the top fields. While I was going up there I saw my ******* of a neighbour that moved in a couple of years ago walking his dogs. We don't speak and haven't since just after he moved in and turned nasty towards everyone on our side. While I was checking around the top I turned around to make my way down the other side of the road and noticed him by his bins down the side of his massive shed. I didn't think anything of it then as I was so worried about Cleo but I should have realised his bins weren't there as it was bin day today and everyones bins were at the roadside. I made my way back to the house and decided to stay up with Oscar all night as he was upset about his sister not being there. We spent the night curled up on the sofa and he never left my side. Him and his thick fluffy coat cooked me as he is like a hot water bottle. By now I had allsorts going around in my head and was sick with worry.

Seven in the morning came around and no Cleo so I had breakfast while waiting for daylight before going out into the garden and calling her name. By this time the wind had gone and I heard a cry. I went back in to make sure it wasn't Oscar which it wasn't and called her again. There it was again. I kept calling her until I could pinpoint her location and it was our idiot neighbours shed. Because he put up a six foot high fence on his side of everyones existing fences I had to go all the way up and around to get to his house. I rung the doorbel but didn't hear anything so knocked the door. No reply so I knocked again and still got no reply. I went around to his shed and looked through the window while calling her name hoping to get a glimpse of her but couldn't see her although I could hear her clearly. The sound didn't sound right to me as it seemed too clear for her to be in the shed. I went around the side of the shed and saw a little paw stick out so got down on my hands and knees and sure enough there she was stuck under the shed. She was squished right down on her belly the poor wee thing. It seems like she crawled in easily enough as the path is paving slabs but has gravel under the shed. As the paving slabs are a inch or so higher than the gravel and a couple of inches under the shed she couldn't get back out. I went around the other side where the bins normally are and there is a slightly bigger gap. I dug the gravel out with my hands and tried to move the paving slab but it wouldn't budge so ran back around and got my trolley jack and raised the shed so she could get out. She was terrified and shaking like a leaf so I dropped the trolley jack back into our garden and carried her home. She was stinking of dog pee so I guess I know now what he was doing down that side of the shed last night. When we got home I put her down and she went and hid under the sofa for a hour before coming out all nervous. I got her something to eat and Oscar came running to greet her. She is back to normal now having been cleaned up and fed although she hasn't left me alone and is on my lap even now.

He had to know she was under there and he sure as hell knew I was looking for her so it is just more nastiness from him. There is no point in confronting him because with my temper I would end up punching him because he is such a smarmy ******* to everyone. I have lived at 23 different addreses in my life (ex RAF) and he is by far the worst, most nesty neighbour I have ever had. The previous couple and their children that lived there were lovely and we got on really well. They did a house swap with him (basically bought each others houses) and things went downhill rapidly. At the end of the day I am just glad to have Cleo back safe and sound but she will not be going out after dark for a long while. I will sleep well tonight!!

My neighbour is a first class *******. He has his dogs on a wonder lead and gives them extra slack to go after any cat's, in or out of his garden. He has even done it when my cats where in my garden and I called him out on it for what use that was as he still does it. That's not what I was thinking though. My thought was that he knew she was under there long before this yet he didn't have the decency to let me know and it seems as though he let his dogs relieve themselves on where she was. She was stinking of the stuff. He had a flashlight that was bright as the sun plus he earlier had all his outside lights on which lights the place up like a football stadium.

Took Pumpkin and Autumn to the vets originally booked for vaccinations but Pumpkin (the boy) took a turn for the worse the night before so was more an examination.

High heart rate and temperature of over 40! Had an anti inflammatory injection. Went back the following day and everything back to normal! Phew!! He really wasn't well.

Had two revelations at the vets ....

First off the vet said they were nowhere near 9 weeks, seven at most ..... !!

And Pumpkin, the boy, is actually a girl

So that's 5 girl cats in the house !
