Show us your kitty cats

Does anyone have any food recommendations for my two incoming ragdoll kittens?

Was going to start them on whiskas wet pouches of kitten food, but I have been doing some research and a lot of people say whiskas is akin to eating MacDonalds every day :p

Fed my cat a mixture of Felix, dry food, and some of what I used to eat!

He'd go mad for liver, raw or cooked.

He lived to be twenty, so not too shabby.

I think Felix is about same price as whiskas.

To be honest, my parents always fed their cats on whiskas and it never did them any harm.

I guess as you say, best plan is to mix things up between whiskas/Felix and some meat scraps leftovers.

It was strange with Felix, I'd give him alternative makes, such as Whiskas, and he'd turn his nose up at it, Felix or nothing!

As promised, an update and some pictures - we've had nobody come forward, and have made the decision today they are almost certainly abandoned, as I haven't found any signs of anyone looking for them.

They were found in the road next to a big commercial dumpster/bin - someone dumped a mattress in it which was propping it open, and while we might be jumping to the wrong conclusion here, suspect they may have been dumped inside, and it was just luck that the mattress was put in as well.

Complete guess based on guides online, but we think they are around 10-12 weeks old, both boys. They have clearly been loved and cared for at some point, as they are extremely well behaved (as far as kittens can be!) and very sociable and affectionate - they love their cuddles. I can't fathom why anyone would dump such beautiful chaps as they have lovely little personalities already.

We are still trying to figure out what to do with them, the vet said letting the RSPCA take them is probably the sensible option, but honestly, I don’t know if I trust them, and regardless, it wouldn’t be fair on them being stuck in a shelter for months – I’m going to enquire about us fostering them until a home is found, but I think policy and bureaucracy is going to get in the way of that idea.

Still waiting for Cats Protection to get back to us, but again, not holding out much hope. We don't qualify for any of the financial help with cheap neutering, and they're likely to just refer us to the RSPCA as well, so getting them snipped & chipped is most likely going to come out of our pocket - not ideal, but still better than the alternative!

We'd love to keep them, but with a dog, 3 cats of our own (and 2 children), the house is already turning into a zoo, and I'm not sure we could handle 2 more long term "residents", plus our greyhound seems to be getting a bit stressed out; when they're chilling it's OK, but when they want to play, they nip at her paws and tail, and she's really patient with them, but has started just hiding in her cage looking depressed :(

Are they a bonded pair...i.e. from the same litter of kittens?

Pretty much :p

You do have to question why it's so cheap in comparison (sure, some of it is going to be marketing). We feed ours on Purina One - far from the most expensive, but not the absolute bottom of the barrel either (The old man gets Gourmet Gold senior pate, it's all he can eat as he's lost a lot of teeth :().

It's much cheaper if you buy in bulk, we get ours from Zooplus. Comparing prices per kg: Zooplus = £4.43/kg, Pets at Home = £4.67/kg, Morrisons = £5/kg. Doesn't sound like a big difference, but when you're going through 4-5kg/month it soon adds up!

It's a good idea to give them a mix of both wet & dry, partially for cost reasons, but also because crunching the biscuits helps to clean their teeth somewhat (just make sure they have plenty of water out - we have a fountain for ours as they prefer running water).

No idea if they're from the same litter, but they seem extremely close

I have my two on Purina, it’s all my Tilly will eat, Jess would eat Whiskas but much prefers the Purina so I just buy 40 pouches at a time.

For dry, they’re on Wellness Core, the ingredients are quite nice to read… but Tilly has just snatched some of my popcorn as I type this…. Not sure that was good for her :D

@Haggisman my next door neighbours are after kittens if you do get real stuck, they’re experienced cat owners and are just about getting round to the idea of getting another cat… I know they had enquired with a shelter about one of their one eyed kitties as they didn’t want them to be left

See, I know scientists who work for Mars Pet Foods (who own the Whiskas brand), and they do far, far more work to ensure that their food is healthy for pets than anyone ever does for human food. There are problems with it, mostly because most pet owners don't like the food to visibly contain fur/skin/gristle/bone, but the idea that it's like MacDonalds every day is toss.

I do wonder why no one makes cat food made from mashed up mice/rats/earthworms/insects though. I'd buy that in a heartbeat.

That's being saved for us when proper food runs out.

Mine is the same with Felix. It's well known that Felix, Whiskas and the other supermarket brands are plain awful, but some cats will eat nothing else!

Cats can be such finicky critters, refusing certain cat foods, but will happily munch away on spiders, flies and other dubious substances!

Thanks, I might take you up on that offer - they've gone into the work newsletter yesterday, so we'll see if anything comes of that, but if not I'll drop you a message with some more details :)

I’m upset… literally saw them this morning and they’d picked one up :( She’s a cute torti I’ll get some photos of her when I meet her :(

With two of them to feed, I don't really want to be buying the super expensive posh stuff at over £1 a pouch.

It's all really a question of how much do you want to spend. Unfortunately, cat food has gone up by a huge amount over the past few years.

I use Whiskas, occasionally some Harringtons biscuits, fresh chicken and fresh liver.

My three cats eat a minimum of ten pouches a day. Work that out and it's a lot of money!

Every cat is different. I get eight different flavours and rotate! All three cats like all the flavours, but they get bored very quickly if they aren't given a mix. They absolutely love the biscuits, but they are expensive, so I usually just sprinkle some on the Whiskas.

All three love chicken. One loves fish. Two prefer the chicken to be raw. One won't even eat the chicken if it is cooked. Same one happens to like raw liver. She also hunts for herself to supplement her diet with some natural, healthy stuff!

It's not a good idea to start them on expensive food, because it's difficult to get them off it when they get older. Anything nice you feed a cat it will expect tomorrow and demand the day after.
