But did you see what state the other guy was in lol
Seriously though that looks quite nasty
Need to be careful of infection
Hopefully that's not right now when no vets
Except emergency vets are open

Thanks guys
That photo he actually looks pretty ok
That was about 6 weeks ago
Sadly he's went downhill a lot since then
From 6.5kg to 3.5kg which is very drastic weight loss
The vets think he may have a GIST
Which by weird coincidence my partner has
Though she's responding really well to chemotherapy
But given his age and the fact he gets absolutely stressed
And travel sick before even leaving the car park
They don't recommend putting him through it
In order to take him for more thorough tests/xrays/mri/ct etc
And being diabetic clashes with some treatments
That might be possible anyway
Luckily the vets are mobile so been visiting constantly
But they're limited to ultrasound and physically feeling his abdomen
As mobile vets they have to send him to another vet
For the more extensive scans

I know I have to make the decision
But poorly as he is he still plods out and somehow jumps up
Onto the stool for his insulin injection
Sits there purring away while being injected
And looks up at me so trustingly that I feel awful for contemplating
What i am thinking of having done

Wow I am a right mess
I guess when the vets come i will have to bite the bullet
At least since they're mobile he will be in his own home
If that's what it comes down to
But boy is this hard
He looks a lovely old boy.

It's such a hard decision to make. Especially to a member of the family, they aren't just pets but loyal companions who just want to be loved and looked after and in return give us lots of cuddles. They give everything for us.

I certainly know where your head must be at. We sadly had to make that same decision with both our boys. June 2022 for Sky and April 2023 for TJ. Got them as rescues in 2009 a few weeks before I met my wife, so we're part us us the whole time we have been together. Both similarly seemed totally fine then suddenly weren't. Sky was eating and what not just fine, suddenly very quiet and wheezing when I picked him up, pff to vet and lungs filled with fluid and heart about to give up. Poor soul was struggling and in pain. So hardest thing I've ever done, but it was best for him. Still upsets me thinking about it.

TJ was very timid but came out his shell after Sky went. Had TJ at the vet as was acting strangely, vet said he seems to be displaying signs of dementia. Took him home, then next day he wouldn't leave his hiding place all day, wouldnt eat eat until placed next to him. So reached in to get him and he wouldn't move, he tried but was following the wall. Next morning straight to the vet and he had literally gone blind over night so along with the dementia diagnosis it was only fair to him that he go to sleep.

They were both 17 at the time. Still miss their cuddles and cheeky faces.

So tough bud, but know all us cat servants have been at somepoint where you are now.

Thinking about you today mate. And I've got the pic open on a separate laptop while I work, for some reason this has really affected me.

I've rarely been without a cat for my entire life, and we have 5 now, so I guess it's a reality check.

Cat Flap dads, how did you all get a flap fitted? New door completely? We've a full glass panel backdoor so can't really cut the glass to fit a flap....or can I?? Leaving the window open isn't an option. Mario now neutered and chipped, with Matilda shortly to undergo the same op. Once she's recovered, we'll be starting to let them outside. I'm considering getting a catflap so they can come and go as they please.

I bought a Pet Tek cat flap for glass and then had a piece of glass made for the kitchen door, was about £160, the flap was £30 ish.

The clear cat flap in the glass looks really neat, our cat likes to sit at the door and look out planning his next move without actually having to venture out.

Thanks guys

As much as I want to say keep him going as long as you can at the end of the day you really need to do what is right for him no matter how much it hurts you. I have had to make this choice twice now and just 9 months apart. That was over three years ago and I still second guess myself whether I could have done more for them even though I know I did the right thing for them. It still hurts even now and I am tearing up just typing this. Garfield had kidney disease and had had it for some time when he suddenly went downhill. After several close calls over the past year it was time to stop his suffering. Jade who was our first ever cat hit me even harder and it was just 9 months after losing Garfield. She suddenly stopped eating and was diagnosed with a tumour on her kidney. She was surviving on just treats as whenever she ate her food she would just bring it back up so she didn't bother. The day I said goodbye to her broke me and I still haven't gotten over losing her. It doesn't matter how much it hurts you though, you simply have to do what is right for the cat no matter how much you love them.

Thanks for the kind words guys
Means a lot
He's still eating though not as much as usual
Still drinking plenty
Supplemented both of these anyway
With some high nutrition powder on his food
And some oralade (electrolytes ,etc)
He loves that stuff only got to get the bottle out
And he comes running
Luckily can get the oralade of amazon etc to try to
Keep all the vets bills down a little

It's very hard
He's showing no signs of pain
Though not always easy to tell with cats I know
The main visible signs are the severe weight loss
Despite He's eating
And very wobbly back legs
Starting to show some difficulties with his bowels
Vets will be here sometime in next few hours
And will sit down and decide what's best with them

He had a lousy start to life
Belonged to a couple of female drug addicts
They liked to play football with him
Until finally they were forced to give him up to a local rescue
Or face charges
He was approximately 5 when we adopted him
So at least we have given him a lot of good years
Despite his start in life he's been the gentlest cat I have known

Poor lad. They don't understand when they're abused, but they fully understand being loved. You've done well by him.

You've set me off again!

Sending positive thoughts. I know it's hard, but let us know what happens please <3

Yeah i will do
No specific time for the vets
Being mobile means can't really keep to an exact time
Plus it's a nightmare here with all the building
They're doing on farmland
Without putting in new roads and infrastructure
Rush hour and school run on some roads is taking 90 minutes
When it used to take 10 minutes
So if they get stuck on one of those roads
Might even be this evening before they get here

Just to update
Vets have been they're both very understanding
And compassionate
And been treating him very often over last few years
So they can clearly see the deterioration even from
Their last visit a week ago

We have decided to let the poor old boy
Have one last day so we can say our goodbyes to him
So they will return tomorrow afternoon

Oooh boy. I was dreading updates to this thread. I had your pic open all day, will do the same tomorrow.

So very sad. At the same time we don't often get a chance to say goodbye to them- we all know you'll treasure the next 24 hours.

They reckoned if let nature take its course
Would be maybe a week or two
But no guarantees he wouldn't be suffering during that
As hard as decision as it is
I can't have him suffering for that time
The vets will even miss him he's one of their favourite clients
No matter what they do to him shave him, take blood samples etc
He just sits and accepts it with no fuss

Tonight he can have whatever he wants out the fridge
No more can't have that because he's diabetic
Not looking forward to tomorrow
But at least he will be in his own home not a vets surgery
And The vets are lovely ladies
As are the people at the local animal crematorium
Their compassion does help somewhat

Yeah the family from out local animal crem were so understanding and sympathetic. We used them both times as they were so good with our boys.

Ours will guarantee individual cremation
Will even let you attend if you request it
Last time I had to use them
Must have been 15 years ago by now
They had just opened the business
Didn't ask for upfront payment and brought the ashes back
And said if you cant afford it now we can give you
A couple of weeks to pay
I did warn them some people would take advantage of them
If they continued doing that
Even the vets today said don't worry about payment
We can deal with that later
They're one of the few left around here that are independent
And not owned by some hedge fund company

Ours are similar. Only been around a few years. They felt there was no decent single cremation services for pets, so they started on.
They have a viewing room so you can spend time with your loved fur baby before the cremation. It's all so nicely done.
First time they dropped the ashes off to us. In our chosen urn, some fur, footprints all in a lovely bag with a rose on top. Second time we had to go there but they'd been busy.
Gave us a couple of weeks to pay if needed.
Pick up from vets when possible and no freezers. Picked up in a pet bed with blanket, they know how much they mean to us so take extra care to treat them well.

The wife and I got tattoos done from their paw prints.

I hope your boy has the best night with you. Spoil him rotten and give him all the cuddles.

They sound very much like ours
Sadly a lot of the vets now being bought out
By hedge fund companies you feel some of the compassion
Has gone from them
In the bid to meet earnings/pay shareholders etc
Been a long time since I moved south to avoid the Scottish weather
But I still have fond memories of the late Henry (harry) pfaff
Probably the most compassionate vet i ever met
The money was pretty irrelevant to the guy
Had a great sense of humour too

Encountered one of those vet companies in my job search (web dev), thought working for vets might be satisfying but nope according to their glassdoor everyone hates them, gave that a miss.
