I want to get one for ~£1500, strip anything unnecessary and sell the bits to recoop some money. Could make for a decent cheap track car although I don't know how well the Renesis will cope being thrashed a weekend or two a month.

Pretty much exactly what I was going to do, but the stories of £3000+ rebuilds being a common occurrence put me off. But then I suppose for the price they are now could always just sell it for parts/scrap and buy another.

That one looks nice Tom|Nbk, would be interested in finding out how your getting on with it after a few months :).

A cambelt change and major service on some cars can be in excess of £600, so £900 on a rebuild isn't that harsh considering the car is so cheap in the first place.

I suspect £900 is a conservative estimate as the parts alone would be ~£500 for genuine Mazda bits and that's assuming it's only apex seals and gaskets that need doing.

Still, if I had one as a track car I would have a go at DIY. Just dreaming though. I would need a garage first before I could even consider a track car :(

£900 is quite conservative, from memory a warrantied rebuild from the reputable guys is more like £1500-2k.

Tbh though, if you're going to buy an RX8 then either picking up a dirt cheap one (or one that's freshly rebuilt for double the money) is the way to do it. If you've paid a small sum for it and it destroys itself, sell it for spares / repair or fix it and move on.

Been a while since I updated you with my current garage.

Got rid of the avensis and vectra and got a 320d as a daily driver. The S2000 I got during the summer and is currently sorn'd as I'm fitting coilovers and a new exhaust over the winter. The racing car has been worked on all season and I only got one run out in it this year with the new engine. GSX-R 1000 K6 - 176bhp & 330kg = 533bhp/ton! :D Can't wait for the new season to begin! Booked up 2 test days already :)

Needed a new car for the incoming baby (more rear seat room)
Never had an American car, so picked this new one up.
300 w/ 5.7L V8 Hemi (363bhp <- the non-sensible part of my decision)
Mainly bought it because of the interior (leather seats, 8.2" touch screen fully loaded etc).
Very happy so far (RWD in this weather)

^ I really like that (although I suspect I may be alone in that opinion :p )

My dad has the same engine in his Jeep and it makes a lovely sound even with the standard exhaust. MPG is hilariously bad, but I guess as you're in America that isn't really an issue. :D

Washed the car today, this is about as clean as it gets.

Obviously taken with a Hasselblad H4D, and a £20k lens.

I don't know if it is the lack of S-Line kit such as the spoiler but my car, especially the rear just looks old fashioned to me...having said that most of the week I spent my time configuring various BMW and Audi's on their respective sites... it just looks boxy and weak to me now. Guess I shouldn't have gone and sat in that LS600h either...
