Most car lights are fixed to the rear of the car, not the tailgate. Them lights are there to aware other road users that there is a vehicle/object there.

That's not the reflector section of the lense though, so unless your unloading with your lights on it's going to make 0 difference by the looks of things.

Legal minimal illumination. Because the light assembly goes up with th trunk a pair of secondary lights/reflectors are required.
Its for visibility at night when loading/unloading.

Lol, yes they illuminate separately from the rear lights on the boot lid.
Quite bright so useful at night, though they only come on if the exterior lights are on.
