Siliconslave's how to make espresso thread

he's never come across as a "whining wimpy sounding guy".
Hoffs got some competiton from Kier Starmer now.

----

Ninjas not pretty, looks cluttered - you'd have to keep it out of your eyeline / swipe left, versus a sage or e61,
most of these air fryers aren't exactly a nice piece of domestic design either

1. You mean the one shared a few posts back? https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/t...o-make-espresso-thread.17887005/post-37378568

2. Why the homophobia? Makes you look like a ****.
1. I missed that from the post and his channel. Thanks.
2. Where did I imply any homophobia? I subscribe to his channel and pay a YT premium subscription, therefore indirectly lining his pockets. I wouldn't do that if I was a homophobe.
He's extremely knowledgeable and I have zero interest in his personal life. I like him and my faux pas/bad joke has ruffled your feathers. I apologise.

I'm thinking about retiring/repurposing my Rancilio Rocky. I've never been super happy with it, and have never really been able to stall Silvia even at the finest setting (burrs chirruping) and it has a fair amount of grind retention (1-1.5g). I've done a few upgrades over the time (step-less grind mod, got it tilted at 35° forwards to reduce grind retention, shimmed the burrs, ptfe taped the threads). I'm certain the burrs probably need replacing (had the grinder ~14 years) but I'm not sure that will solve the issue. Thinking about just using the Rocky for pour over/filter and getting a new grinder.

I know that "stale" coffee will flow quicker, but I'd still expect a grinder to grind fine enough using supermarket coffee to stall my machine tbh. (Pressure is at 9 bar, tested using the outflow/hot-water-pump-with-valve-shut/30 sec technique.)

I'm considering the Niche Zero or the DF64 Gen 2 - don't really mind buying second hand if there's a saving to be had. I primarily drink espresso (no milk added), but I've been leaning toward Americano because of the high output of the coffee. Any thoughts?

Cheers.

This is pretty amazing, and tasting notes are spot on. I do love anaerobic natural process, and this has intense fruit and ginger notes to it. Delicious.

I will look up thankyou - I enjoyed the last anaerobic coffee I tried

I've got 2 from Wogan at the moment -

Colombia Finca La Laguna Reserva - wasn't sure first time, re-tried and still not sure maybe not my taste pallet

Kenya Kariti Kianjege AA - really enjoying this one - really really nice coffee, very smooth with a slight "twang" - but nowhere near as "twangy" as the last Ethiopian coffee I had which was just too much for me

If you're certain the burrs need replacing, why don't you think they are part of the problem? Surely worn burrs won't grind as fine as new burrs?

I bought new burrs a few years ago, having bought the rocky second hand more than a decade ago. (in fact my purchase of the Silvia and Rocky was entirely due to this thread!)
I haven't done the stepless mod, just replaced the chute with a 3D printed jobby and using a small wooden stick to extract what's left in the grinder, I have < 1gm of retention.
My Rocky will choke my Silvia quite easily. With the beans I have atm, I grind on 4, 2 will totally choke the Silvia.

I only buy beans that have been either been freshly roasted (from an online retailer) or Union Coffee from Sainsburys that has been roasted within the last few weeks. If beans don't have a "roasted on" date, I don't buy them.

However with some beans I do find that the Rocky's lack of micro-adjustment does make it difficult to properly dial in. I'm pondering on a suitable replacement that meets my requirements for a wide range of grinding, fine adjustment at the espresso end, low retention and (preferably) a 60g+ hopper for when I make a 1.25l pitcher of filter coffee.

Can you do any better than the ninja at around the £550 mark, either a similar all in one machine or separate grinder / espresso machine?

Going to retire my Jura soon, and the ninja caught my eye. Will be looking to upgrade around Christmas time in hope of some deals.

I did want to actually go back to a separate grinder / espresso machine this time round before I seen the ninja. £250 for a grinder / £300 for an espresso machine doable? Or too low?

The Jura has too much upkeep being a fully auto, absolute minging inside after a few months / a year of use and is a huge job taking it apart to clean beyond what ordinary folk would be capable of/ willing to do. Hence why I wanted to go seperate. But seeing the ninja, which shouldn’t have the same upkeep issues as the Jura as has a normal portafilter rather than being a fully auto.

Just bought a second hand Sage Barista Pro from FB marketplace for £250 in almost new condition...

The wife's a Barista by trade so has had great fun teaching me the 'art'... apparently im a **** student :D

so the journey officially begins :D

DF54 grinder is £239 and Sage Bambino (non plus) is £280, both brand new. Maybe not "high end" but arguably better than the Ninja.

Looking for some advice. The grinder on my barista express has bit the dust. I get zero grounds coming through on anything but the coarsest settings which is no good for me.

Now I could fart around changing the burrs and hope this works or I could look to get a separate grinder, something which has always been recommended to me as a solid upgrade.

Ideally I'd like to spend no more than 200, but the cheaper the better. Can you get a decent grinder for this price that would be significantly better than the grinder on the barista express (assuming I could fix it) or am I in dream land?

You can pick the fellow opus for just under £200 which is apparently great value for its performance.

I'd be tempted to give the barista a good going over with a hoover through, its likely just something gunking up the mechanism
Tried that. Deep cleaned the grinder, pulled all the burrs out, replaced the felt washer, nothing jammed at all.

I can order a new burr for £30 quid so I may try that first. Just half tempted by the potential of new gear also tbh!
