Sim racers - what are you running?

I've been out of the sim world for a while now. I have been getting a growing urge to get back into it. After getting rid of the old DD full rig, I had bought a TM TGT II a couple of years back which gathered dust after the initial excitement as I never did gel with it. It just didnt give me the same fidelity or feel as the old DD setup I had, I knew this would be the case but moving to the from DD wasnt really ideal. The limited torque didnt really bother me. The notchiness of belt and flimsiness of the plastic desk clamp did. I ended up getting rid, decent wheel just didnt really do it for me though. I've been seriously missing playing ACC, DR and iRacing and with the new Codemasters made WRC coming up I was keen to dip my toe back in. Still dont have room for a full rig, However, I've decided to not half ass it this time! I went for:
  • Moza R5
  • SRP 2 (2 pedal load cell set)
  • CS V2 wheel
  • table clamp

Tried to keep it as cheap as possible while getting as much power as possible =(

If they don't release a formula wheel though, I fully admit it will outright have been a terrible decision

Goddamn it's so fun. What an age we live in. I can essentially drive a 95% accurate racecar of any variety I decide at anytime I choose from the comfort of my bedroom. The future is now

How do you stop the pedals from sliding on the floor?

Got mine earlier in the week. To say I'm impressed would be an understatement. The price Moza are cranking these out at and the quality of product you get for that money is staggering. The setup I now have is not perfect, but for the most part I'm blown away. My two main gripes with the Moza setup as it stands:
  • Desk clamp... Whilst functional and very very stiff when mounted. I have it setup on a very thick desk, the clamping screws are LONG, I'm constantly banging my knees on them. I dont know how you could really get around this and I think its just a compromise I'm going to have to live with to have a desk mounted setup.
  • Brake pedal. Out of the box experience? Solid feel and construction, maybe not to the same overbuilt standard as I've experienced with other brands but simple and effective design. HOWEVER, It seriously lacks tunability. The stock spring/rubber combo is horrible, pedal travel is also far too long and the feel is mushy and far far too soft. I'm waiting for the Brake tuning kit to arrive which comes with much stouter springs and an elastomer instead of the stock rubber. I feel this kit really should have been included as stock and increase the price of the pedal set appropriately. My last load cell pedal set was the HE Sprints. For the price I paid for the SRP's I'm not expecting Sprint level performance. However, the lack of tunability and horibble brake feel out of the box was a dissapointment. I expected better, I fully the Brake kit to solve the pedal feel issue, its not a show stopper for an extra £15, it just seems a little penny pinchy to not include the kit as standard.
I also added the clutch pedal and handbrake to the collection.
I'm almost regretting not spending the extra £100 on the R9 wheelbase, however, I think it was the right choice whilst having it desk mounted, 5.5Nm is more than sufficient and the sustained torque feel is plenty. That said, if I go back to a proper rig mounted setup I will probably make the wheelbase upgrade.
Next upgrade in coming months will probably be the GS V2 gt wheel. As nice as the FSR formula wheel is, I play in VR most of the time and think it would be a bit superfluous for my needs.

Bolted the pedals to a board of wood, cut down so that the back of the board butts up against the wall, zero movement whilst playing.

This is the current setup.

*EDIT* I can confirm after fitting the brake tuning kit that it is a huge improvement, feels a lot stiffer. I'll have to get some more seat time to know if its right for me or not. However, I think I'm considering postponing buying the GT style wheel rim, possibly look at other pedal options if I dont get on with the SRP's. Issue being if I go much stiffer I run the risk of the improvised pedal mounting setup no longer being sufficient.
I may have an opportunity coming up soon to possibly buy a alu profile rig from a friend, providing he wants to split the rig. That however brings a whole host of space issues which was the reason I downsized in the first place. I definitely want to take sim racing more serious again, its just a case of how much I'm willing to compromise. If I go back to a Alu profile rig, the desk would have to effectively go and the rig would be my "desk". Not the most practical solution. Hmmm much to contemplate...

Thanks, that is a good idea! The board doesn't lift up under heaving braking?
Nope not at all, no matter how hard I press the brake it dosnt move. No lateral movement either, I stuck some of the rough side of velcro on the underside to stop sliding/rotating also.

That said, if I intend to stay with the desk setup I'm going to grab some more wood and build a more substantial slightly raised base to give a better driving position. This is only Mk1 to get it usable.

Thanks :) I won't have carpets for much longer so velcro won't help me.

I used to have a great setup with a Leo Bodnar SimSteering2, custom carbon fibre wheels, 8020 rig, Recaro seat etc. but sold it all just before my son was born. Now that he's 4, I'm tempted to get back into it but not sure I want to dive into the deep end with a full rig to begin with.

I've just taken the plunge and placed an order, eventually went for :-

MOZA RACING R5 Bundle Kit

MOZA RACING ES Formula Rim

MOZA RACING SRP Lite Brake Pedal Performance Kit

Should see him through until he buys his own house and has room for a rig!

I really think power is underrated. If I turn it down to 7-8, or turn the gain down 40%, I really feel the loss.

Not so much for driving fast - I think, more or less, you get what you need from essentially any DD base to keep the rear in line - but for the experience. I used to wonder why I'd see people unsatisfied with midrange bases, but now I'd really like to try a base with access to 20nm +

But Broona that sounds like a great setup. Moza is killing the competition. That KS wheel is probably the best buck-for-buck wheel out there, and it's never in stock. I can't believe every company doesn't have their own exact knock-off of that wheel. Just a cheap good looking formula wheel with nothing fancy but plenty of buttons

Well Logitech are now selling the DD base and wheel seperately, which bodes well for upcoming add-on wheels.

Interesting, but I find my QR1's more than good enough. I really don't have the "slop" that some people claim to have.

Am I missing something? This seems like a ridiculously overcomplicated design for little benefit. Was the old design really that bad? Just seems like "heres something new, give me your money!"
Maybe I just dont get it? Then again, I've never quite understood the draw to Fanatec in general.

Using Fanatec DD CSL 8NM and standard pedals + load cell upgrade here. Very happy with it.

Need to find a proper way of mounting in the limited space I have... The desk clamp really sucks as it forces the whole thing to be at an odd angle!

Many people have issues with the QR1's and compared to other QR's from other manufacturer's , the fanatec QR1 is not as good as others.
Oh i understand that and the reason for the upgrade/moving forward with the design.
However my QR1s and CSLDD have virtually no play and would not be justifiable to change out. (im guessing luck of the draw and machining tolerances).
If i was buying now, would be more complicated, the CSL DD still has a QR1 as default but i wouldn't want to buy QR1 wheel side with now QR2 is out.
They need to offer QR2 Equipped bases out of the box rather than an extra.

foldable wheelstand, either GT Omega or NextLevelRacing.

Im currently using the GT Omega one, built out with the extensions, a seat and some DIY 8020 HOTAS mounts. I'd love to upgrade the lot (can keep the seat) to a full profile rig with a monitor mount, as i currently roll my rig out in front of the TV when needed.

One of the advantages of getting divorced is your aloud a simrig in your living room :)

Is the angle too shallow? If so there are wedges/spacers that you can print on Thingiverse or buy on etsy/ebay.
