Singapore Grand Prix 2011, Marina Bay Street Circuit - Race 14/19

So basically JB has been awesome this year and in the form of his life and yet is not even 20 points ahead of his team mate having the worst season of his career.

Everything's relative though isn't it ?

Consider forced and unforced errors on both accounts - Jenson has dropped plenty of points through no fault of his own. Lewis has dropped points and they were in the majority his own fault. Infact how many times have the team buggered up Lewis' chances? Tally that up against how many times the team has buggered up Jenson's chances...

Then, consider the difference in pressure placed upon Jenson's shoulders in comparison to that of his team mate - having lunged himself into the "Lion's Den" - into a team completely galvanised by Lewis Hamilton, who many say is arguably the best F1 driver on the grid.

I don't think 20 odd points in front is that underwhelming then, considering. :)

This year would have been hilarious with Bernie's medal system :p

I agree with the commentators though - even though the championship has been won, it has also been great to see lots of action behind the leaders. Actually, it has been amusing how little Vettel has been shown on TV for the past two races - pretty much just at the start and crossing the line at the end.

By your logic should you not class MS as the 'best' driver seeing as he has won 7 WDC's as opposed to Alonsos' 2? ;)

Let's take the 2009, 2010 and 2011 seasons as a reference point.

Race wins

Vettel - 18
Button - 10
Hamilton - 7
Webber - 6
Alonso - 6

Kinda speaks for itself really

Anyone can cherry pick a section of records to make someone look better or worse than they are. Redo your stats from 2007 and see where Button fares?

So using those kind of stats:

1996/1997

Race wins

MS 8 JV 11

Poles

MS 7 JV 13

Clearly JV was better than MS for atleast 2 years. Or maybe it was just the car.

Same can be done for Mika v MS and I'm sure Damon v MS 94 to 96.

Funnily enough all driving newey cars :D

The best given driver at any one time is not the one leading the championship, the best package is.

I am still going to go out on a limb and say Hamilton will finish ahead of Button in the standings this year.

Please note, i may regret saying this :D:p

Exactly.

What I find interesting is that last year, the current set of F1 drivers voted Alonso as No.1. The team principals also voted Alonso as No.1

Now, those people suggesting that Vettel was the best last year (and not Alonso), because he won the title - are they not questioning why the current F1 fraternity voted Alonso as No.1? Has this thought not occurred to them?

Perhaps they believe that the polls were rigged or perhaps the current F1 fraternity know little about F1?

Those polls cannot be ignored.

I would be interested to understand why those polls are being ignored by some.

To some , that you even have to stress the bolded text at this late stage in any season is amazing enough (considering he is compared against The Messiah)

McLaren must be near gaurenteeing 2nd in the WCC (not that this means much admittedly), but one more team **** up for JB would make it difficult, (saying that one retirement for Lewis would end his chances of beating JB, unless they both retired)

JB finishing 2nd in the WDC would be as an amazing result imo as winning the thing given how carp the car has been a lot of this year (compared to the RB, and sometimes even the Ferrari)

Exactly.

Of course the current F1 fraternity know what they are talking about - but when you have a lame duck in the other seat, and the whole team COMPLETELY focused around you its a lot easier to look fantastic than two drivers who have to fight equally on and off track.....

it appears that the f1 drivers have requested a meeting with Charlie Whiting in Suzuka to discuss Hammy driving this season....I can see him getting some pain here!

Lewis Hamilton's fellow racers have asked to discuss some of his controversial driving this year in a meeting with FIA race director Charlie Whiting at the Japanese Grand Prix.

For what good?

Kamui / Maldonado and Felipe gonna chant "permaban" or something? :p

And you think the F1 fraternity can't see through this?
The F1 drivers and principals know more about F1 than any of us.
I trust their judgement more than any fan and if they voted Alonso as No.1...that counts for a lot.

As I stated in another thread...if Hamilton was a lesser driver, driving for a lesser team, his job would probably on the line, given the amount of crashes he has had.

It doesn't surprise me that some drivers are asking the authorities to look at Hamilton more closely. Whether it happens though...is another story.

At the end of the day, Hamilton is a big draw. He is controversial and increases F1 column inches. The F1 authorities know this, so are unlikely to hurt Hamilton (if at all).

Personally, I think McLaren need to have someone on his radio, who can advise him and calm him down when he is getting excited or attempting to win the race in a single lap. Hamilton needs a 'Rob Smedley' type radio man.
