But that's the thing, look at the video again, there's a good cars width between Vettel and Max when Max starts heading right where the gap between him and Kimi is already next to nothing. Vettel just keeps coming because Max is giving him the space to do that - at which point Max hits Kimi, who spins into the side of Vettel.

image 35, before Kimi is caused to swerve across, look at the gap here. Verstappen has no reason to back off legally, he was alongside Vettel as Vettel swerves across, he backed off because he saw it coming. If he was where he should be, that is faster and gaining on Vettel because of the better start, his tires would have to fit between Vettel and Kimi's front tires... or in other words, 100% Vettel would have caused a collision, Max did his absolute best to avoid the torpedo but couldn't as he wasn't given enough space.

Will someone please tell me what Vettel was thinking?!?!?
That was very Schumacher-esque in that sweep across the track! I thought they clamped down on that because it was getting dangerous. You just CANNOT do that in such, or any, conditions.
Ah well, that's the Championship all but decided....

So the Ferrari tweet apparently wasn't an official tweet and is not their position... yet, it's on their twitter feed and hasn't been deleted.

So, seems like it is official and is their position.

BREAKING NEWS

No further action from the FIA for Sebastian Vettel, Max Verstappen or Kimi Raikkonen after investigation into first-lap clash

They claim 'no driver was predominantly to blame'.

Typical FIA!

I'm a big Hamilton fan, with no love for Vettel, what he was doing was within the rules, its just one of those things.

There was no way that Vettel knew Kimi was there, Verstappen was avoiding the collision with Vettel and didn't have time to check the other side, should he have bailed in hindsight? Yes, but its not like he benefited. Kimi was the innocent party but was in the best position of any of them to have saved himself. Classic racing incident.

Yup. Typical. If no one driver was to blame, how about spreading it out around then rather than just going with the cop out.

So if you're a German and you drive a Ferrari (or Bennetton....) then you are just about untouchable.....

Yup, the fact that Ferrari are backing away from blaming Verstappen at all and saying their official statement isn't official suggests they know who they think is to blame, if they thought it was even partly Verstappen's fault they'd blame him officially and strongly.

As for if Vettel knows Kimi is there or not, no excuse. It's the start, you don't know there isn't a driver there and you have no reasonable expectation no one is there. If Vettel got a truly great start.... it wouldn't be an issue, if you have a poor start and he did, then you have to expect others to catch. Turning into other drivers at the start and causing race ending collisions for other drivers is not excusable by "he didn't know he was there". T1 vs t1 15 laps in, you've had 15 laps to be told the gaps, know how far back several cars are, have multiple straights to see people.

First corner, you can't swerve across like that, a less aggressive move and up to Verstappen sure, but the pictures show how fast he moved across with no intention of slowing or stopping till he'd shoved Verstappen over to the very inside to compromise his corner. If you have a bad start you have to assume more than 1 car has caught you and keep a relatively steady line.

The bigger swerves people do are literally off the line before someone has had the chance to get alongside and once there you have to stick there. It's absolutely not okay to do that to a car alongside and absolutely not okay to do that after several seconds when more than one car can easily have caught up. Vettel and Kimi are consistently getting into contact in T1 above and beyond anyone else, primarily because the FIA keep letting them off causing contact in the first corner.

Except they've now said that it is...

Oh, notice how the investigation was PURELY aimed at Vettel not the other two.
Scratch that, Raikkonen was also investigated. Only one who was not was Verstappen.

I'm not really surprised F1 are doing what's in the interest of keeping the drivers championship alive as much as possible going forward, it's to be expected these days.
