Sir Alex Ferguson Retires

If Moyes is to join, top four is to be expected at the very least in the first season (given what he can do with Everton with "his" squad compeating for 5/6th, I don't see why 4th or higher is out of reach with the current squad).

If he gets a decent amount to spend in the summer, then even better. 1/4ers in FAC / CC (or whatever the CC is called these days lol), and just see how the draw for the CL group goes (even with little experience, the squad - and UEFA rating , should allow Utd to escape a group of death draw).

Im not against Moyes in the slightest, if it happens it would be like some kind of natural progression. With no disrespect meant however, there should be bigger targets on Utd's short list (even without Maureen).

I wonder if SAF's retirement will have any effect on the imminent Nike deal re-negotiations.

And with rumours circulating that Falcao may be at Utd then Utd have an excellent chance of winning trophies with Moyes at the helm.

IF this was ever even a possibility - I cant see it happening now. The Asprilla quote specifically mentioned how SAF "protects his players like family". With a change in manager and a relative unknown quantity at Utd whoever arrives, this isn't going to be happening imo

As a neutral I've hated and admired United and Ferguson in equal measure. At times they have had teams that have played some wonderful football and have been a pleasure to watch. But with that, many football fans, myself included, have looked on with envy at the success they've had and became tired with the dominance they've shown in the Premier League for the last 20 years.

Personally, I think these are exciting times for The Premier League. Sorry United fans but I think a large portion of the country would quite like to see that dominance end. I'm predicting a somewhat barron spell for Utd, Moyes is a somewhat uninspiring appointment if that proves to be the case.

I might be wrong and perhaps he will do well, but it would make for a far more exciting league if we didn't have 1 dominant team.

Who knows, as i said its a rumour;)...i dont personally think Falcao will be at Utd next season...hes either going Chelsea, City or PSG.

Its ok now, I've been through all the stages of grief today and I am now at the point of acceptance. Who knows how Moyes will do. You don't have to have played in Europe at all to win the CL (though it can't hurt). If he has an absolute mare next season then he will be sacked but as long as we are competing for the title most of the season and get out of the CL group stages I will be happy enough to give him another season.

I have been getting increasingly pee'd off with our style of football and general quality over the past few years so hopefully a change of manager will reinvigorate us.

We have the senior players to help maintain the winning mentality Fergie instilled in the team and with a few good signings and the proper use of the players we have I reckon we are all good. Get rid of the deadwood, retire Giggs and play Kagawa more!

Of course not, the end game has to be for him to continue the tradition of us challenging for the title season after season but just next season as a starting point would simply finishing top 4 be seen as a success?

Again I'm not against the appointment per-say but at this point it's a little hard to know what the expectations for someone like Moyes should be next season...

My post wasn't so much answering your question about next seasons expectations, more following on from the comment about expecting to win a trophy each season and comments (by others) that Moyes advantage is his potential longevity.

Regarding next season in isolation, the aim should be the same as every other season - to be there or there abouts in the league and to put up a decent challenge in the CL. I don't think you can simply say top 4 would be enough or he needs to do x, y or z.

If you get knocked out of the CL in the 1/4's and finish 4th but only a few points off the top in the league it wouldn't be ideal but it wouldn't be disastrous either. If however you get knocked out of the CL in the group stages and 15+ points off the top of the league that would be a very poor season.

The bare minimum has to be to remain competitive at the very top of the table with the ultimate aim to win trophies regularly.

First Thatcher dies, now Fergie retires.. Somewhere there's a busy journalist with one pen left.

BBC Sports Editor David Bond: "David Moyes is set to be appointed as Sir Alex Ferguson's successor at Manchester United. An announcement could be made tomorrow afternoon."

Another sort of non-official confirmation.
