Sir Alex Ferguson Retires

My point was if he was given the job in 2008 instead of the barca job very few of the United fans would have been happy. Very few top level players actually go on to be top tier managers. So I think we can rule out playing european football having much bearing on being a great manager.

I don't disagree with you specifically, I just don't think the examples are equal. If, for example, Eric Cantona had become the manager of a similar 'B' United team with similar success and then gone on to replace Ferguson, then I suspect that most Utd fans, (me included) would be pretty happy.

And I disagree with you about whether playing experience has any bearing on management, I feel that any experience is better than none and while not all great players make great managers and vice versa, experience at the top level is always relevant, however it is gained.

None of this means that Moyes will not be a hugely successful manager in Europe, he has never had the resources to prove it, hopefully he will rise to the occasion and clearly the Man Utd hierarchy believe he can.

Me?...I will be shouting my support from the stands, even if he wasn't my first choice....better, more knowledgable people than me believe he has what it takes, so we shall see.

I've never really rated Mancini, I've always thought he pretty much had a great squad and fluked it.

I'm far more concerned about Chelsea next season.

If man City have any idea they will sack Mancini, perfect chance for them to become the dominant club in England (but do you believe Moyes would have carried on and won 3 Italian titles like Mancini did with with Inter?)

The point is were any of them fit to take the reigns at united after a long spell with him. So how long has it taken kidd since being assistant to actually do anything of note.

Kidd? He did 7 years with the master and look at his record.
Mclaren?
Quieroz?

Would anyone have actually wanted those if fergie retired. I don't see why it would be any better for Jose to groom an assistant and then expect instant success.

All 3 of them have been far and away more successful than Moyes.

He hasn't been appointed based on his trophy count (obviously). He's been appointed based on his personality, style and background. The people who know what they are talking about, and the greatest manager of them all, believe he's exactly what's needed, and unless it all goes terribly, we can't say otherwise at the moment.

How is that hard to understand?

Indeed. I don't fancy being in his position the first time he loses a derby or to Loserpoo or Chelski though......

Great news that Moyes has gone to Man.U.

Not only does it mean that he won't be taking over at Chelsea but it should make them a bit weaker as to be fair there's no way he'll be of Fergie's standard for a while at least.
It's going to be fun watching plenty of Man.U. fans frothing at the mouth too if they don't get success for a few seasons as some of them have only ever supported a team that wins things, that's not a dig, just the way it is :)

That whole post was a dig :o

I'm sorry Robbo but that post just smacks of logic and right now it's the end of modern football as we know it, football is dead. Stop talking such sense!

Now that we are lumbered with him, does anybody think hes actually going to do anything to improve the squad?

Like shipping out Fletcher, Giggs, Welbeck, Anderson and Valencia?

No?

It will be just like having Fergie still there then in that respect.

Well he'll probably bring in Baines, I'd expect him to get Moutinho as well at least.

The bit he was talking about is true though. Very few Man Utd fans know what's it's like to go a couple of seasons without winning anything, and I'd bet my life on it that if it happens, they will be screaming for Moyes out.

Wouldn't surprise me if he gets booed for his first loss tbh.

A CL winning manager who would want a fortune to spend and tends to only stay for two or three seasons, before leaving the team in a generally worse state than when he joined.

I like Mourinho however, but I can see why Moyes has been appointed, maybe you can't.

Didn't you argue a while back how it would be different with Mou this time :p?

Eventually, which isn't what was suggested. It was suggested that an understudy took over. Would any of those really have been better placed than Moyes to take over from Fergie had it retired when they were assistants?

No they wouldn't. Moyes 11 years at Everton is far better than the years as his understudy as proved when Kidd and Mclown first attempted management.

Mclaren is the only one I'd suggest has eventually done better things than Moyes. Perhaps Manu should have gone for him instead.
