Sky Fibre Optic

Hey guys - I must have been living under a mat for a while because I just found out sky offer fibre broadband!

I currently have phone, tv and adsl unlimited with sky using my trusty Netgear DG834GT with custom DGTeam firmware (mainly for the WoL option to wake up my pc when I'm at work) and connect at 13mb/s

I have never had a problem with sky broadband and am thinking of moving to their fibre but I have some reservations I was hoping you could help me out with please

1: Are there any downsides to fibre besides extra cost? ie latency or noise on the line issues that affect adsl

2: Do they supply a new router? I would prefer to keep my current one due to the WoL ability but I'm not sure if it can handle fibre speeds - this is my main reservation - would my router handle it?

EDIT
3: Is there any downtime like they need to reconfigure the line for 2 weeks or some malarky?

Can you use the sky adsl router as a modem only, with your own hardware (Asus RT-N56U)?

Assuming you are talking about SKY fibre:

The phone socket is connected to the BT DSL modem. The modem then connects to the SKY router. The router then connection to your computer (or switch).

I think, if you want, you can do away with the SKY router, but my understanding is that you MUST use the BT DSL modem.

My setup is as follows:

Phone socket -> BT DSL Modem -> SKY router -> Switch -> computers

This provides me with a gigabit network and for the last 3 months has provided me with a stable internet connection and a stable network.

Out of interest why would people not want to use SKY's router?

1. Not really. Latency should be lower.

2. You'll need to use the router they provide or buy a new compatible router.

3. Downtime will be 30 minutes to an hour or two.

Many Thanks KIA :)

So to confirm, the DG834GT is definitely not compatible with sky fibre at all?

My upload gone up from 2mb without rebooting.

UpStream Connection Speed 10000 kbps

My download speed seems to have halved this morning even though it's still sync'd at this:

Anyone else got problems?

Morning all,

Out of nowhere, BT have enabled our cabinet for fibre, great news.

We want to move to sky ideally, just wondering how long after your cabinet went fibre sky rolled into town?

I got a letter through the post from sky first that my cabinet had been enabled - BTs letter followed a week later. Your exchange has to be sky LLU'd before they can offer a fibre service. As long as it is enabled you should be able to order straight away

Just ordered this, they reckon I will get 40Mbps. I really hope I can get near that at least! :)

They said I have 30 days cooling off period where if I don't find it fast enough I can cancel. Is this true or just nonsense to get me to sign up?

I currently only get around 4Mbps on their normal broadband so hoping for a nice improvement!

Got connected yesterday:

Modem Status Connected
DownStream Connection Speed 39992 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 2000 kbps

Hopefully, at some point, that will get knocked up to 10Mb?
