Sky Fibre Optic

I've got a question for you fibre guru's:

Currently, I have Sky Unlimited Broadband (upto 20Mbit) and I connect at around 6 to 8Mbit due to line quality and distance from the exchange.

When fibre is made available on my exchange (scheduled date is Dec 2012), will my speed increase or will I have the same issue as I currently have where the distance from the exchange and line quality will limit my download and upload speeds effectively making anything faster than I currently have not worth it?

Would be great if someone could clear this up for me :)

Thanks!

Your speed will be related to the distance to your CAB (not the exchange) and the quality of your line. So its very likely your speeds will be improve. Have you checked your estimated speed using the BT checker?

Thanks for the reply!

I've just checked the BT Infinity speed checker and its estimating 68.8Mb download and 20Mb upload which is pretty impressive if its true!

Roll on the 31st of December!

Our test also indicates that your line currently supports a fibre technology with an estimated WBC FTTC Broadband where consumers have received downstream line speed of 68.4 Mbps and upstream line speed of 20 Mbps.

Just upgraded my Sky Broadband Unlimited to Fibre via Quidco (£45 cashback) Got an install date in December. Quadrupling my speeds!

my dates slipped also from end of December to march 2013 but they have been very busy installing new cabs all over the area i live in and i even have 1 about 5 doors down so nice and close to my house.
I just hope they do not push it back any further as last 2 months internet speeds have dropped horribly here maybe side effect from them doing a lot of work in the area on lines

thx do you think will ever get full speeds of 80/20 ? or its not gonna be possible

It might be possible in the future using line bonding and vectoring. Fibre on demand will be available next year, which will be able to give guaranteed connection speeds after a hefty installation fee is paid.

Has anyone else had port forwarding problems with the sky router?

I had mine set up great and it was working fine, but has now stopped forwarding ports at all. Nothing has changed and the settings are still all there, but it just isn't working.

Just literally had sky fibre installed and all is running. My first speedtest.net reported 23mb then 2 minutes later 19mb, then 14mb and now 6mb.

Why is my line slowly crippling itself? My old line used to net me 2.5mb download! The BT guy ran some test on his gadget to check line speed and it said the speed attained on my 40mb package was 39998kb. He did say i probably wont get that once i connect with sky but im VERY underwhelmed by the speeds so far :(

sigh  give it a few days to settle down

I did say to the engineer "i guess it needs a few days to settle down and get its max speed" and his reply was "It should be ok from the word go".

Are you sure you havent changed any settings on your computer itself, eg. regarding firewalls?

If you really think it is the router which is causing problems try setting it back to factory defaults and then start from scratch.

Try calling SKY and telling them that your speed is heading downwards. Is there any problem on their end?

When the engineer come round he had already sorted the cab out and started to setup up modem/router and phone socket.

He tried for half hour to get internet signal through the router but to no avail. He suggested ring sky and ask them whats going on. I sat on the phone for 15 minutes until i got through. I had a funny feeling they haven't set our line up properly and asked them. The man replied that hes had a lot of calls from my area with apparent problems whilst he was umming and arring.

Funny enough as soon as i started getting stressy my internet signal light come on my router and he said to apologize he'll give me half price films or sports.....

I'd rather get a decent service first :/

Just ordered Sky Fibre...pretty excited as I've been stuck on 6mb for 4 years now!

BT Infinity speed checker resulted in 27mb downstream, Sky say 55mb (I've only ordered 40mb)...to be honest either would be a god send!! Any idea who to trust more?
