*** Sky Q Thread ***

OK - manual recording was useful to just record from kick-off point of matches and avoid the preceeding diatribe, avoid recording overlap issues and save disk space.

About the Hybrid LNB (thanks MissChief) all the pictures I have seen, show 2 Q plus 4 other/freesat connections; they must have good lnb's in that compact head to drive 4 signals !;
I only really need 2 for freesat, which could be capped, so that, down the line ,could move the existing two cables back from Q to these regular LNB's, if we reverted to freesat.

.

further - on the hybrid lnb it seems an old HD+ or freesat box can be connected to any of the 6 inputs (which are identical) so seems a no brainer to request hybrid lnb, to avoid Q lock-in, and have unused/unwired lnb outputs sealed

I'm a bit lost with a certain requirement.

We have 2 rooms, each is supplied with 2X LNB from a dish that we use on Freesat currently.

My dad is moving in and wants to bring his Sky account across (normal HD+ with Sport).

Sky have told him that in order to have multiroom watching/recording he needs to go down the Sky Q route now and that it uses Wifi to send the video source to the Q mini box.

We don't want that, the internet connection/wifi is poor enough as is without adding something like that.

We already have the 2X LNB in each room, all we want is 2 X HD+ boxes setup to watch/record independently of each other and happy to simply pay the multiroom subscription.

But Sky have told us this is not possible. Is this true? We don't want or need the features of Sky Q, my dad just wants to watch football/cricket on a normal HD+ box either in the front room or kitchen. He doesn't use computers or tablets.

Can we not simply get the old style subscription package anymore? If he transfers will they force him onto the new Sky Q stuff?

Sky Q and the Sky mini box create their own wifi network.

However what they say is true, you either need multiroom (now Q) or a separate Sky subscription.

It's all seemingly gotten ridiculously complicated. For example we'd have to get the LNB replaced on the dish, it wouldn't support freesat unless a hybrid one was installed?

So, we don't want the Sky Q multiroom stuff, so say we go Sky Q in the lounge and Freesat in the kitchen this won't work as the Sky LNB won't support Freesat and Sky would install their own dish and cables :(

Will Sky at least allow us to transfer the current Sky+ account my Dad has and keep it as is? That way we can use the existing equipment already installed?

You need a hybrid LNB to run Q and Freesat, mention this during the order process and to the installation engineer when he contacts you the day before.

Sky should allow you to transfer the account but I'd imagine they'll tie you in to a new 12 month contract due to the engineer visit. If he is out of contract, it may work out cheaper for you to sign up as a new customer and do it that way.

I highly doubt they'll let you use the current equipment if it's a new install, maybe a simple change of address may work.

yes- Maybe you can tell them transfer Dad's account to new address, current install is fine and do not want expense of a new one,
and also would like a legacy non/Q multi-room added since new address has a multi-LNB.

As you suggest poor wifi/powerline-distribution might prevent you having Q multi-room anyway. (what are they suggesting for such customers - 2 Q's?)

Oh ok. I'm loving the sky q so much smoother the interface and easier to find things. Just need a mini box but £99 is too much

£99 is a bargain IMO for a box that streams Sky to any room as well as acting as a handy Airplay device. Much easier than faffing about with cabling lots of rooms. We've got 3 minis atm and they are working flawlessly except one small hiccup at the start.

Are the minis still using wireless? Or have they enabled the homeplug tech yet?
