Smartwatch Thread (news/apps/updates)

I finally bought a Sony Smartwatch 3 last week for £70 new from Amazon during a promo!

I'm finding the GPS locking/tracking to be rather flakey in standalone mode, especially using Ghostracer, need to try Strava standalone again to see if this is more a software issue than hardware. For example, yesterday it only recorded 12.5 miles of a 17 mile ride, which was also recorded on my tablet using Polar Beat.
The "Wear GPS" app (made by Ghostracer devs) shows that the watch is taking an age to find satellites and get a lock, sometimes I give up after ~10mins and simply start recording with the unit stashed in my pocket without the strap.

It's still very early days regarding Android Wear 2.0, but my faith in this watch getting the update is dropping.:(

Still so many standard features I've yet to use, mainly because I don't have a fancy Android phone, using an Ulcool v11 "tide me over" Xmas pressie currently (which given I've sent ~6 SMS and 1 call since Xmas, does its job).

If I'm being honest, I'm getting close to the point of regretting the purchase and I was relying on Android Wear 2.0 on somehow resolving the GPS issues, so I could use it for Strava recording.

It's not on the update list. It came out in 2014 with a Broadcom CPU so an update is very unlikely

Light sensors = Good news!

NFC not on the Style = Bad news!

Honestly with the adoption of Android Pay/Apple Pay and Contactless payment methods in general you would have hoped they would have put NFC in both of the devices.

$249 for the Style compared to $269 to the Apple Watch...why doesn't it have NFC? Mind boggling decision for me in all honest and a big disappointment in my eyes.

Also the Sport is no use to me, it's 14.3mm or something thick, that's way too munch for my slim wrist so that's out.

Looking forward to seeing what comes from 3rd parties especially Huawei whose watch I loved the last time, they packed all features in (apart from a Light Sensor) and their 2nd gen could be something special.

My thoughts exactly! I ended up grabbing a cheap Zenwatch 2 off the bay to try out Wear 2.0 and tide me over until we see what else comes along later this year.

Definitely makes sense if you ask me Fens, definitely in the same boat as you in terms of waiting to see what else comes along.

My iPhone 7+Watch will not be dislodged right this instance but hopefully later in the year something awesome from Android Wear will come which ticks all the boxes for me.

anyone got or have experience with LG G Watch R and your opinions, looks like a cheap stop gap that is or will be getting android wear 2.0.
before hopefully better stuff coming out latter this year.

I had one before moving to a Polar M600 as I wanted the fitness stuff.

G Watch R is brilliant. Doesn't look out of place at all and I bashed it numerous times and it barely even scratched

Had one for two years, other than a few dying pixels there have been no problems at all :)

I loved mine, but after a couple of years it seemed to have deteriorated. Didn't always respond to voice and touch. Occasionally had crash/freeze moments.

Still in use after over 2 years, battery life seems to have dropped a bit but as long as I have wifi off and brightness on a reasonable level it can still do just about 2 days.

Only issues I find now is the microphone doesn't seem to work as well. It can pick up "ok google" just fine, but it takes a while to process the command afterwards now.

Still waiting for a decent minimal watch with Android Pay. The R while I can cope, I do find it a little on the big side (I have small wrists :(), and the Sport looks like it's around similar dimensions.

Apparently Sony have confirmed it won't be getting the update now

That's such a shame as the Sony SW3 does everyting I need from a smartwatch.

I'll be keeping my SW3 though. Unless the Wear2 upgrade does something amazing to persuade me to spend £200+ on watch, then what will be the point in changing?

Will Sony be releasing a new watch?

Got the smartwatchabout 18 months ago cause it was the only watch that had gps built in at the time and was good for running without carrying a phone around. Sadly with Sony pulling support for it and no SW4 on the way I can see me having to change it for something else

someone on twitter is trying to port the AW2.0 to the Smartwatch 3, Google has released all the sources now so he says it shouldn't be to hard, if it does work I might by a secondhand one to replace my broken M360 which will never get it.

Has anyone tried the chinese 'clones'??.

Been reading up on the likes of:-

Zeblaze Blitz 3G
Ourtime X01S
No.1 G5+

They seem to add a lot for a low price and the reviews seem to be ok.

I've had a moto 360 which got the dreaded cracked back.
I dont want to splash out over £100 on a smart watch anymore and wondered if its worth getting one of the above??.

Picked up an Ourtime X01S today on a bit of a whim - not really sure why I just felt like having a play with something. I think its biggest downside is going to be the weight - its pretty hefty and the strap is of the type that tends to start peeling after awhile so might not last the longest. Doesn't seem to have a lot of selections for clock faces either (and from a quick google seems to be quite awkward to add new ones). Seems pretty well built but no idea how well it will stand upto long term use.

Aside from the size of the screen it is pretty much like having a last gen smartphone - you don't get much screen on time (calculates at about an hour for stuff like video or active browsing and upto 5 hours on minimum brightness displaying a static image) but battery seems (based on the graphs) to last reasonably in standby - with everything like WIFI and GPS turned off shows an estimated 3 days.

I'd also wonder how secure these builds of Android are - definitely not putting my usual accounts or logins anywhere near it at the moment - though so far can't see any suggestions of malware or trojans/rootkit.

I know someone who had the Zeblaze and after having it replaced 2-3 times gave up - too many issues with reliable bluetooth, GPS and WIFI apparently and it would keep restarting.
