Smartwatch Thread (news/apps/updates)

Picked up an Ourtime X01S today on a bit of a whim - not really sure why I just felt like having a play with something. I think its biggest downside is going to be the weight - its pretty hefty and the strap is of the type that tends to start peeling after awhile so might not last the longest. Doesn't seem to have a lot of selections for clock faces either (and from a quick google seems to be quite awkward to add new ones). Seems pretty well built but no idea how well it will stand upto long term use.

Aside from the size of the screen it is pretty much like having a last gen smartphone - you don't get much screen on time (calculates at about an hour for stuff like video or active browsing and upto 5 hours on minimum brightness displaying a static image) but battery seems (based on the graphs) to last reasonably in standby - with everything like WIFI and GPS turned off shows an estimated 3 days.

I'd also wonder how secure these builds of Android are - definitely not putting my usual accounts or logins anywhere near it at the moment - though so far can't see any suggestions of malware or trojans/rootkit.

I know someone who had the Zeblaze and after having it replaced 2-3 times gave up - too many issues with reliable bluetooth, GPS and WIFI apparently and it would keep restarting.

In december right before christmas I picked up a moto 360 2nd gen with 2 straps for £95 and a moto 360 sport for £80. Both in mint condition.

Battery lasts 2 days, screen on 24/7.

I don't know why anyone would look at buying cheap ones brand new tbh.

The x01s runs full android rather than android wear. With some tweaks I've bumped standby time up to 12 days and preliminary looks like screen on time increased 2-3x.

did any smartwatches come out at mwc or when are we expecting any announcements?
and can someone release one which lasts for at least 12 hours with bacountry navigator, ie with the gps on.

I think we are going to need a revolution in battery tech for something that is a full standalone smartwatch and can run something like that 12+ hours - even with an application specific low powered processor and a shrink in nm of the process node I doubt its possible without an ASIC.

You got lucky, I've kept my eye open for a sport. Nothing less than £120 unless you don't include postage.

Don't bother looking at auctions. Morons get into bidding battles and then stuff ends up selling for more than brand new. I used Buy it now then filtered for cheapest.

I just checked and price I paid was

Motorola Moto 360 Sport 45mm Silicone/Rubber Case Classic Buckle Black... =
ORDER TOTAL
£85.00
+ £3.30
postage

£88.30 including postage

The 2nd Gen 360 was actually quite a bit more than what I could remember £128 inc postage. So yeah I got a bargain

they are only £170 brand new now.

there will be new models coming out soon I imagine. you can set up an alert on ebay to email you if one pops up for say less than £100.

i think I got lucky as it was before christmas. people tend to buy brand new gifts for each other and are skint. so second hand items could possibly drop in value if you are desperate to sell.

How do the Gear3 owners rate their watch after owning it for a while?

I'm looking for something to replace my Pebble Classic and have been eyeing one of these for a while. Do you regret not getting something with Android Wear?

Never had android wear

I went from original gear to S2 classic to S3 frontier

It does everything I need... since fully charged mine 3d 4hr 50mins remaining 1d 57mins (39% battery)

I've not took calls on it since last charge but have received lots of notifications (emails , whatsapp etc) when I've taken or made calls quite a few calls on it its dropped to 2.5 days before needing a charge

apps not so many watchfaces lots

Only gripe is S-health moaning at me to get moving if I sit down for a bit :p

Bloody annoying when you have to sit at a desk all day :D

just seen some garmin fenix 3 reviews, 16hrs with gps on, and that's what reviewers are saying they get, and with it off they are saying 2 weeks.
Shame its not android based and its so expensive.

I have a Garmin Approach X40. I bought it as a golf gps but have used it far more as a fitness tracker. Their app is great, battery life is great, all in all I am pretty impressed. The fenix 3 seems pretty impressive and if the X40 is anything to go by then I'm not sure how an Android Wear watch could be that much better.

they're also releasing fenix 5x, which has topographical maps and 24hrs Gps battery life. Think that's the one I want but no idea when, as I cant afford £600.
Just feel android wear not only gives you access to more apps, but future proofs you more due to those apps.

I got a Fenix 3 HR after my original Moto 360 died, as a smartwatch (e.g. notifications/search/voice control etc) it's nowhere near the Moto 360, but the activity tracking stuff is way better. The Android Wear activity tracking seems very much tacked on, and that's arguably more useful than the smartwatch side, obviously that's Garmin's 'thing' so makes sense, especially with cycling as I already had/have a Garmin Edge so sensors etc all setup for that.

Battery life is great, I usually charge when it goes below 50% 'just cause' and that's a week+ of general usage with a few activities (not as many as I should do I admit :p). Saying that I never had a problem with the Moto 360 and charging overnight, even with the Garmin I don't sleep with it on (except the first week or so), so what's the difference in just taking it off and dumping it on the side or spending a tiny bit more effort to put it on the dock.

I'd love a Moto 360/Android Wear watch with the activity/fitness side on par with the Garmin, but that really doesn't seem to be close to happening. It's more than just steps and running, and only some android wear watches even get the latter sorted...

Samsung have dropped the price of the Gear S3 and have a £20 voucher deal going at the moment, so I jumped at the chance of buying one for £279.99. I'm using it alongside my S6.

It arrived yesterday and so far I am loving it. I did my first workout with it today and it tracked the same distance and general heart rate of my old Fitbit and integrates well with MapMyRun which I have been using to track my workouts. It also includes a free 1-year subscription (circa $30 value) to the Under Armour service, which I didn't know about until I installed the companion app on my S3. I didn't get split timings during my run, but this is probably down to a configuration setting somewhere.

Spotify integration works well although I wish it had a standalone mode with offline listening as I could ditch my mobile phone entirely during a workout if it offered this. You can load your own MP3 onto the Gear S3, but I don't have any MP3 now since moving to Spotify.

I'm using it in always-on mode at the moment. It's been on for 24-hours and battery life is down to ~ 28% but that included a 1-hr run with GPS use and music playback and I set it into low-power mode overnight.

Next up is to investigate sat nav / navigation - I want to find something that offers the ability to view the map as well as turn-by-turn directions when I am out cycling / hiking for large distances.
