Snow chains - they don't work

Perhaps your post would be worthwhile aimed at the autosock.co.uk. assuming you want to file a grammar complaint.

There is nothing wrong with the grammar they have used - my post is aimed at you and was explaining to you, in capital letters, what the passage you quoted said.

It says you should ALSO fit them to the front, not instead of, so that advice is not the reason morons are fitting autosocks to the front wheels of an RWD car.

His post is aimed at you. The Autosock website clearly states you may also wish to fit them to the front wheels (as well as the rears), not fit them to the front instead of the rear.

How can you state that they HAVE to go on the rear?

You dont know that persons car, maybe their rear tyres are brand new with plenty of tread and they have no problem moving but their front tyres tread are low and need to be replaced soon, which is pretty understandable as your rear tyres should be better than your front. Why would they want to fit snow chains to the rear of the car when the problem they are having is control and stopping?

Yes it is possible the owner of the car in the pictures are idiots, but it is also possible that they know where the problem is and addressed it correctly.

And yes I do drive, I do not claim to be brilliant at driving but I have driven for 5 years now and never once got stranded in the snow but I find my car is rubbish at stopping, it could be because of the overly sensitive ABS system or it could be because I have upgraded my breaking system which works brilliantly in the dry but not so well in the snow. I find traction control very handy in the snow and makes it easier to drive, once I had to turn it off to help me get up a hill but its good to have the option.

Thats it mate, you stand up for yourself ;)

For the record I am NOT instigating the use of them on the front, however I admit I was lost by Fox's comments. :o

Its sod all to do with BMW or any other marque tbh, its , 9 times out of 10 , (imo) the clueless drivers who have no idea how to drive in the snow.

A bit like the earlier comment "I floor it and the T/C takes over in 1st gear" or words to that effect, exactly, the driver floors it, but what does the T/C to to counter? it backs off the throttle.....

It comers back to the 1 Series drivers who put snow chain on the front wheels.....

You see it everywhere in these conditions, wheels spinning away, engines screaming and puzzled drivers wondering why their shiny BMW (or whatever) won't move.

Ignorance.

Until somebody grasps the nettle and dramatically broadens the training & education required to obtain a driving licence, the situation will not improve.

I think we should have a driving test like Sweden.

With a mandatory skid pan session, mandatory experience required night driving, etc..

I also hear they have an excellent rule, that if an underage child is caught driving without a license (obviously there's no point banning or giving points to somebody who doesn't have a license yet - somebody tell that to our courts maybe ??) so instead they punish the parent by banning / adding points to the parent's license

What an excellent idea !

Where did you hear that, Wikipedia?

It is entirely possible to ban and add points to somebody without a license. Points are not given to somebody else instead, if somebody else gets points or a ban it'll be for a cause/permit offence.

I'm surprised there are so many BMW's on the road in the uk, simply due to they are soo bad in the snow. I understand the snow doesn't last too long but the lost days at work must hurt the fleet buyers?

Until recently (2008) the UK had not had significant snow fall for more than 7 years.

Whilst searching the interenet to remember which country had the mandatory night driving and skid pan sessions in the driving test i came across this.

http://www.team-bhp.com/forum/street-experiences/90594-swedish-driving-license-my-experience.html

I assume with him living in gothenburg and you not, you know best as usual ?

For some reason I read it as if you were talking about the UK. I've no idea why I did that, although as you've since edited the post perhaps you didnt make it very clear.

I was implying that there's no point in adding points to a license that somebody doesn't hold yet.

We do it regularly but it's completely pointless. The swedish idea seems much better to me.

Have edited my post to avoid further confusion.

Do you think BMW and other rwd car manufacturers will suffer with drops in sales over the next few years due to the recent winters we've had?
Maybe we'll see more suv type vehicles...X1?

No, because the problem isn't RWD. It's a combination of low profile tyres, RFT's, driver experience, etc etc.

Did we ever hear any more about whether the 1 series was going Front Wheel Drive or not ?
