Snowden files 'show massive UK spying op'

Could care less tbh.

Im happy in my own life and haven't found myself being stopped doing something I want because of the gov. I don't do illegal activities so w.e

They wanna look in my emails? sure go ahead and while they are at it delete my spam please

Most email is encrypted as is most other forms of communications, they will simply be logging point A and point B and at what time.

And what makes you think that encrypted mail is unencryptable by people who have the ability to tap into and store traffic higher than an ISP level for 18 months worth of data?

I'd wager if they have enough computing power to do the above, then encrypted 256 bit encrypted mails are a walk in the park for them.

Surely that should be "couldn't" care less?

I am shocked that people are surprised.

And pleased that my government is doing this.

You have no idea what they can do with that information.

For example, if they had the computer power you could do a lot of things.

You could make a 3D representation via collab. with mil. sat. systems in orbit, which is useful for a great many reasons, but that would require video footage, which Google glasses will surely be of use.

They could sell the information to Corporations so that they can define their advertising to right down.

It is also Infrastructure for military scenarios, like if you had an uprising that was basically heading towards a revolt, you could find out the likliness of where people will be and deal with it in haste.

There are more, but its late :p.

Btw I don't care either, but i do however care that dumb folks are being dumb, irritating.

The levels of apathy here really are terrifying.

Nothing to hide is not an excuse to have all your privacy removed.

As for the surprise obviously everyone thought it happened but the scope and depth of the surveillance is what is alarming.

Collecting ALL data AND being able to monitor anyone in near realtime. How can people think that's Ok? Yes our government are all nicey nicey at the moment, but as history has taught us that can soon change.

What if in the future it is used to track anyone with opposing political views? Then they can simply trace through your online life and use anything against you.

If these abilities fell into the wrong hands it would be devastating.

As pointed out earlier, this coupled with no oversight is a slippery slope towards a horrible future.

Our government is not 'nicey nicey', they are manipulative and deceitful, precisely why people should strongly object.

And how are you doing. I take it like most of us you live a comfortable and sheltered life free from external threat and destined to live a long and prosperous life.

I wonder how we got to that horrible state of affairs. Maybe some people are willing and happy to do a few questionable things to achieve a greater good.

Oh, and nice to the OPs contribution to one of his threads as usual.

Its as much about the precedent they are setting for the future.

Once we give over these powers it is nigh on impossible to revoke them.

Comfort and shelter are still not an acceptable excuse for total removal of privacy and other inherent rights.

Do you not see the infrastructure this is creating?

Oh indeed, I live a very comfortable life, not really much more I could ask for. But ultimately, that is not the point.

If I were a successful Jewish business man in Germany in the 1930's, I could have said exactly the same.

Same question to you as I asked another: What frightens you so much you are willing to have unwarranted dragnet surveillance done on everybody?

As for your second point. Sure your contents are encrypted but the metadata isn't. That metadata is a very powerful thing. It tells GCHQ who you are talking to, from where and when. Combine that with other data, such as website browsing history, phone calls and so on and they have a very detailed view on exactly what you are doing. In some respects they don't even need the actual content of your email

This. At least one part of government is actually doing what it's meant to.

Except they aren't. They've completely overstepped their bounds.

. Maybe some people are willing and happy to do a few questionable things to achieve a greater good.

What is the greater good?

Godwin'd :)

True though. Alas because people are so conditioned to fear the bogeyman ("terrorism") they don't see the danger of handing more and more of our freedoms and rights over to the government.

I mean, they won't abuse these powers will they? Oh, hang on...

“We all had reservations about it, because we all thought: ‘If this was used against us, we wouldn’t stand a chance’.”

what greater good  I presume you mean protection from these nasty terrorists, well news for you, you're more likely to die in a plane crash than a terrorist attack, but I see years of government propaganda about terrorists has worked a treat on your narrow mind
