Sony Bravia KDL 50 W829

I've just bought one of these (KDL-42W829) after having had a disastrous few months with a KDL-47W805. My first 805 has major 3D issues unless you sat on the floor, which is not ideal. The replacement 805 had about 20% of the screen (right hand side from top to bottom) that was darker than the rest. They offered me the 50W829, but I rejected it because it was too big, and it was active 3D as opposed to passive 3D. So they are refunding me the W805 to resolve the problem.

The W829 is much better than the W805 as far as picture quality and on-screen interface is concerned. The startup delay feels longer than the W805, but I usually just switch on as I am passing, knowing that it will be okay when I sit down. The most annoying thing I find with it, is that they have removed the Aspect Ratio button from the remote. I have a motorised satellite dish, and I tend to watch a fair amount of non-UK material, including Korean TV on Arirang World. That channel broadcasts a 16:9 picture, but in a 4:3 output, so I have to zoom the output for it to work properly. The AR button made it easy, so that's just a bit annoying.

When I was chatting to a salesman in Richer Sounds, he was saying that attention was diverted from the standard LCDs last year, to get the 4K stuff out, and as a result, the quality dropped. But this year, they've focussed more on the normal LCDs again, which has resulted in much better quality. They have a W905 and a W829 in the shop side by side, and the W829 has a much better picture. Black levels are a vast improvement, and the contrast enhancer doesn't suffer the same problems.

Are SONY using different panels in this set? All the reviews praise the viewing angles but mine are god awful unless dead on. Colour becomes completely washed out and blacks go purple. This is only at around 30 degrees off center too!

Out of curiosity how would one of these compare to a LG 50PA650T plasma? Bought it a couple of years ago cheap for £480 ish and thinking of upgrading to something better.

The W905 has excellent blacks and PQ , the shop display set was most likely not set up that great.

A quick question for anyone with this TV or similar that has wall mounted. I have just come to do this today and although it tells you what width screws you need it doesn't tell you how long? I was going to go with 8x50mm with some good rawl plugs would this be ok or better to go with 75mm long? I would have thought that 50mm would be fine as there are 4 screws per bracket and the tv is pretty light.

Any help would be appreciated.

Picked up one of these yesterday after 3 year old threw ball threw front of Samsung 51" Plasma... Nothing bad to say about the screen and blows the Sammy Plasma out of the water in every aspect.

3D movies actually seem ok also :)

I ordered one of these this morning - replacing an 8 year old 42" Hitachi Plasma. Note, the free soundbar offer is back on so I ordered from John Lewis for £749 with the 5 year guarantee as well. Still to tell the missus of the rather large package arriving on Monday!!!

Hi

I have just been out this morning to purchase a 50W829 :D

Just wanted to let people that the free sound bar offer is on again so i got one of those with my purcahse :D

Off to play with the tv

Wow this tv is so responsive for gaming compared to my 5 year old Samsung its like night and day:)

Just waiting for the tv mount adapters so i can get it mounted on my tv stand.

I don't use mine for gaming but i agree it's a great TV. Mine replaced a 50" LG plasma last month and the thing that surprised me the most was the blacks being much better than those on the plasma.

Think I'll be picking one up too. £749.99 from John Lewis with the sound bar seems like a great deal! I'm really tempted by the LG OLED or a reasonable 1.5-2K 4K TV but I just can't help but feel that both of these are going to improve considerably (and price drop) in the next few years. My thinking is get the Sony and it'd tie me over for a few years.

There have been freebie deals with it on and off since it released :p You could always try contacting wherever you got it from and they might refund the soundbar price if they have that deal on. They don't have to but a lot of decent places are good that way.
