Sony Bravia KDL 50 W829

looking at the 55" model of this TV at £850 with the free soundbar is this a good deal?

we currently have a 40" samsung we got 2 1/2 years ago and more then anything the screen blur is starting to really get to me when gaming (even in game mode) and watching anything animated is painful at times due to the shadowing

would i be better saving £110 and getting the 50" version?

Personally i'd go for the 55" at that price if you have the room for it. You never buy a TV and wish you'd bought a smaller one.

Yes, well worth it. The 55" is vesa compatible so, if you intend to wall mount, you save on needing a proprietary set of mounting adaptors (which are £25 I think)

Just got home and unboxed after going to collect as the local store was out of stock.

Got the 55" in the end and it seems very big at the moment, just about to get kids to bed and I can give it a go on the ps4 to try it out for the main use.

lol yes the wife and I measured the 55' - I had persuaded her the 55' was viable till that tape measure came out. 50' it is

Just trying it out and trine 2 looks ace in 3d, I found some reccomended settings but anyone got suggested gaming settings to start from as a guide?

My 42 when in standby mode has a very annoying whine coming from the power block. Does anyone else have this or is there an easy fix? The plug socket is located behind a bookcase and it's a pain to keep moving it to turn TV off

Mine is the 50 and it's pretty much silent whether turned on or in standby, if i put my ear to the back i can hear a faint buzz but it's not noticeable even if stood right in front of it in silence.

I had a quick google and I found a couple of reviews saying they could hear an annoying buzz from the soundbar but not the actual TV itself.

It's not coming from the TV, it's the power supply unit. It even kicks in when the screen is completely black ie. A second or two as it is loading iplayer

Where did you buy it from? Best bet would be to contact them and see if they'll replace it. Record the noise on your phone and send them the YT/other link.

Same, my new 2 day old 50" is silent.

FYI for those my be interested.

The Sky remote code for the free HTCT60BT Sound Bar (to control it as here: http://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Sky-TV/Programming-your-remote-to-operate-a-Sound-System/ta-p/1517967) is 1786.

I've also ordered an IR repeater for £5 since it covers the darn tv IR receiver.

I cannot for the life of me get Netflix to work though. It works fine on everything else in my house (bar the Xbox One which has the same error).

I get a nw-2-5 error with it unable to connect to servers 2 & 3. This is before I can enter any user login info. I've tried everything, other than changing dns servers (which I can't as I'm with BT and you can't change them in the router.) Everyone elses working?

Just picked up the lappland unit from IKEA for this and I thought it came with a bracket but it seems the 55" doesnt :( its going into a wooden unit (thick chipboard esentally) so any ideas on a bracket? Preferably one I can grab on the highstreet save waiting around as the soundbar should get delivered tomorrow.

Was looking at getting the Samsung 55h6500 for 799, but ended up with a 55w829 with soundbar (or BSP1200 BD player) and 5 year warranty (free) for £849 at HiSpek in St Albans. Was a bit concerned with the input lag on the Samsung and the free warranty help me to decide. Is the soundbar any good? Looks fairly decent, i wont use it myself though.

got my soundbar delivered today and it does make a noticeable difference, the main benefit over the tv speakers im finding is pure clarity or sound, its hard to explain but things such as speech and sound effects just sound more defined.

picked up a mount and got it attached to the unit, mounted just high enough that the soundbar fits great without interrupting the IR receiver.

so far very very pleased with the TV, looking forward to getting a few nights of gaming now.

picture of the new setup:

Decided on a kdl50w829 in the end, had it a few days now and I think its great, used some settings off the internet to set the display up and they look very good so keeping those.

The free sound bar is okay as well. I use this for normal watching, sort of sits in between a full 5.1 setup and the standard sound. If not watching a film the 5.1 is a bit much, sound bar just fills that gap nicely, not over powering but better than the television speakers.

I'm about to wall mount my TV, does anyone know which 8mm screws/bolts I should use when it is going onto brick with the built in wall mount? Or should I get a VESA mount?

Got my one - very happy with it. On the display settings are most leaving to default or changing it. I had a look at changing it but it doesn't seem to go into options if you are on an hdmi channel? so not sure how the display settings being changed will apply?

Not sure about the browser but the apps you get when you press the apps button?

Also grab the Sony TV side view app it links to the TV re TV guide and also allows control of the device for those who have the ir port blocked

I've been playing with the settings (from the picture perfect review recommendations on avforums). What's the view on changing the settings do most do it or do you leave it to the auto settings on the device. Those who have changed it how did you find the hdmi picture settings - the only way I could find to get into the settings on an hdmi channel was to go into the help on picture setup and use its jump to settings option - that has to be done on each hdmi channel and netflix also needed changing!

Also do people turn the light sensor off?

Just interested as I would agree that the picture is too bright at the default but turning off all of the sony technology seems a shame :(
