Thinking of getting this tv, but am unsure if its going to be replaced anytime soon?

Most manufacturers bring out new TVs late Spring or early Summer. It is usually a good opportunity to get a bargain as retailers clear the old stock. My 905 was about £1500 at launch, but a little under a year later, I picked it up for £800 from John Lewis with 5 year guarantee.

So don't look at it as getting something old, look at it as getting a proven, bugfixed product at a bargain as others fall for the marketing hype of the next new thing.

When I saw your contrast figure I was convinced that wouldn't work but its not bad...how did you come to those settings? A positive of this combination is it handles darks much better imho than the website that Drukk (and I) had been using.

Guys I own a w905 so settings are pretty similar.

I use light sensor on as I find it does a good job and does not make the image flat and dull which was the case but its been fixed in recent updates.

Also I use motion flow clear, I did use true cinema but found that made the image a little darker?

Is there any advantage for using True Cinema?

thanks

Telly in the front room is on the blink :( - got a good 8 years out of it though lol! (samsung LE40")

So gunna cascade my LG 55" 760T to that room and get myself a new one for my home cinema/gaming. a 55" version of this sounds good!

It's not like the LG' though is it - the 55" panel wasn't as good as the 32" panel that most reviews raved about.

Anyonne confirm please? (ideally with a 55" set) - thanks

Really Considering getting the 50" or 55" W829. I currently have a panasonic 42" V20. Has anyone gone from a panasonic plasma to the sony, i would just like a quick user comparison on image quality. Thankyou for any help in advance
I did that very thing. Had a 50" Panasonic plasma that broke down after 2 years, so spent ages looking for a replacement. Despite my better judgement I decided to give this Sony 50" w829 a chance. I looked at it several times in the different shops and it just never impressed me at all. However it's had nothing but a bucket load of rave reviews and shops are not the best place to test TV's out as we all know.

So I bought one from Costco for £770 with the free 5 year warranty and 90 day return policy... that was 80 days ago...

I've since had the Panasonic plasma fixed (for free by Panasonic which was a nice surprise :) ) and the Sony just doesn't compare for normal TV use, not even close. For Gaming on PS4 the Sony is better, for Blu-Ray it's closer but the plasma still wins but for HDTV and normal TV through Virgin cable it's a landslide in favour of plasma. There's something about the picture that isn't as smooth for the TV and SD looks appalling at times on the Sony, I just don't want to watch it. Also there's annoying bugs like having to wait a whole minute to be able to press a button when you turn it on, what's that about? Doesn't sound long but it get's old quick. Another thing is watching Netflix through the TV app looks worse than watching it using the PS4, almost like it suddenly has motionblur it's hard to describe. I've tried a dozen different settings but it's just not as good. Football looks poor on it no matter what source is being used and that football mode?? On the plus side, for HD the Sony can display some stunning amount of detail at times, especially BR but even Netflix HD (through the PS4 only!!) looks really, really good, and for an LED it's one of the best I've seen. Better than a few mates Samsung and LG TV's I've seen.

I'm sending the Sony back to Costco this week. It's a decent TV but when it can't beat my old Panasonic plasma that only cost me £700 3 years ago, I think money is better spent elsewhere. I'm going to wait a little while and then get a 4k TV for not that much more money.

(Note, before any w829 owners come in here getting all defensive, I've got both 50" TV's up and running more or less side by side with the same source material and been comparing for several weeks... and it's just my 2p. Also if I hadn't had the plasma fixed I'd have probably kept the Sony but with the knowledge I'd want to upgrade it ASAP)

Did you use default settings or change them as per various suggestions on here or other forums. My only issue with the TV is I think it displays dark scenes a little too dark. In bright and clear scenes it's stunning

I've noticed when watching Amazon HD rental/purchase the video stutters a bit. I don't think it is buffering issue because my internet speed is 30mbps+, and Netflix, BBC iPlayer and Youtube all work fine on HD mode.

Do you guys experience similar issues?

Picked one of these up just before Christmas.

1. Is the TV guide meant to take a few minutes after starting before it loads? I get "Loading..." for a while.
2. It seems to crash quite often after changing sources. Anyone else experienced this?
3. How is the best way to test the back lighting? The edge seems to be darker than the middle but this might be a source media issue rather than the TV...

Thanks!

Have you updated the tv to the latest firmware ?

Mine only takes about 10 seconds after the tv is on then i can use the tv guide fine mine has never crashed once.

You just need a black image to test for back light bleed something like this

Tv settings are at default ? or have you adjusted them ?
