Sony Bravia KDL 50 W829

I've been playing with the settings (from the picture perfect review recommendations on avforums). What's the view on changing the settings do most do it or do you leave it to the auto settings on the device. Those who have changed it how did you find the hdmi picture settings - the only way I could find to get into the settings on an hdmi channel was to go into the help on picture setup and use its jump to settings option - that has to be done on each hdmi channel and netflix also needed changing!

Also do people turn the light sensor off?

Just interested as I would agree that the picture is too bright at the default but turning off all of the sony technology seems a shame :(

Well for light sensor I have it on, on my w905.

I used to have it off but Sony released an update that improved the feature. I now put my backlight between 8 and max and then let the light sensor do its thing. I think having light sensor on overrides backlight settings or uses it as point to work from.

if you're using the settings from here: https://www.avforums.com/threads/sony-w829-kdl-50w829-reviewers-recommended-best-settings.1869036/

then copy them exactly the same and then play with them.

i have tweaked slightly and have different settings for each TV/PS4 and Blu Ray.

As some TV is in SD i need a setting which compliments both.

As for light sensor yes turn it off. And change scene select to Cinema

What's the reason for light sensor off?

I've found it fine since Sony released an update that improved the feature, all be it that was for the w905. Before the update it was highly recommended to turn it off as it made the image dull and flat but this is not the case anymore at least with the w905 and I'm sure it's OK on this set now.

I'd have to agree re the light sensor, I think it takes the value set as the start position and seems to handle it. They haven't made these tvs easy to change back light settings so If the sensor works (which it appears to) I'm going to stay with it. Going to get a calibration disc to tune the TV further. Coming from a 32' Sony which is almost ten years old there are moments of brilliance but my old tv wasn't bad at all. Also 50' is flipping massive

The light sensor can automatically adjust the screen brightness and contrast based on the lighting of your room. This feature can be helpful in some situations; however, the ambient light sensor may incorrectly gauge the light in your room and automatically dim the screen, making it difficult to view.

Turning it off allows more control over the brightness and in my situation i just adjust my screen via the backlight control for daytime/night time viewing.

but it is a personal thing i suppose

Really stupid question incoming :(

I have a satellite dish with wiring can I just plug this into this TV - no decoder etc?

got my soundbar delivered today and it does make a noticeable difference, the main benefit over the tv speakers im finding is pure clarity or sound, its hard to explain but things such as speech and sound effects just sound more defined.

picked up a mount and got it attached to the unit, mounted just high enough that the soundbar fits great without interrupting the IR receiver.

so far very very pleased with the TV, looking forward to getting a few nights of gaming now.

picture of the new setup:

Nice TV, shame about the other stuff nearby

Really Considering getting the 50" or 55" W829. I currently have a panasonic 42" V20. Has anyone gone from a panasonic plasma to the sony, i would just like a quick user comparison on image quality. Thankyou for any help in advance

What is the wall mount that comes with the Sony TVs? Ive heard some bad things about them. I currently have a standard VESA mount so just want to reuse that ideally?

They are not actually VESA mount but you can get an adapter that works fine for about £15 but that's only if you want to mount it onto a VESA wall bracket. You can actually fit It to the wall with the mountings it is supplied with, you just need to buy some good rawl plugs and screws. Mine is fitted using the supplied buts and its nice and solid. The only downside is that where mine is fitted I cant get my hands behind to plug in cables so I have to take off the wall if I add cables etc.

Just got my KDL50W829BBU (well it's home waiting for me when I get back from Abu Dhabi) but I was wondering how exactly the DLNA stuff works.

I'm planning on getting a DLNA certified NAS and the wireless router I'm (probably) going to buy has DLNA support too.

Has anyone used this functionality?

I use it on my W9. First of all, if you're getting a NAS, you can ignore DNLA on the router. That's used for if you connect a USB hard drive to the router. The hard drive has no sort of processing or DNLA, so the router does it for you.

With a NAS, you set up the DNLA, plug it into the router, and then it should appear on the TV as a device/source. You select the NAS, choose a filter (you always are asked to choose pictures/music/video), and then you get folders of whatever format listings your NAS produces and sends to the TV.

As the NAS is usually a low power device that's not capable of realtime transcoding, everything relies on your TV being able to decode whatever stream is being sent to it. Some DNLA servers seem to be better at presenting streams in compatible formats than others (for instance, I find Serviio better than Plex, which is better that Synology's own DNLA server).

This can give rise to some compatibility problems. For instance, because Sony no longer want to pay for Divx licences, my W9 will not play Divx - but it will play the open source version of Xvid. Putting everything in MKV seems to pretty much sort out most issues. I have found that changing device profiles in Serviio makes my Sony Blueray player able to play as many formats as my W9, so there's some fiddling around to be done there.

Serviio is the "official" DNLA server for Sony, and it does seem to work better than others I have tried, and there is a version for the Synology NAS.

Finally got round to ordering it. The black one had been out of stock for ages in John Lewis but luckily managed to snag one. Ended up going for tthe sound base for the bedroom as didn't fancy wall mounting the TV or soundbar. Can't wait to get it all set up in the new house with the rest of my stuff. Part of me thinks maybe we should have just gone with a decent 4K screen instead then at least we wouldnt have to bother upgrading for a good few years but hey ho!

picked the 55' up today and so glad i bought one, I've been plasma for the last 7 years,HD material is stunning.the speakers are not as bad as i thought they would be which is just as well as the power cord on the free sound is stupidly short

How do you turn the light sensor off? Struggling to find it?

Menu system isn't the best organized is it :o one thing i dont like about this tv:p

Press the following: press the SEN button then select SETTINGS in the top right corner then select SYSTEM SETTINGS then ECO its under there ;)

Be useful to share what peoples settings are - when viewing daylight scenes the tv is incredible but I do find the dark scenes very dark to the point of murkier than it needs to be. Any thoughts?
