Sony Xperia 1 II - A return to form for Sony?

I'm provisionally excited however a few things have the potential to turn this into a dud...

As long it is has:
Micro SD card slot
HDMI output/MHL support
Decent camera perf

The seeming lack of 4K recording and 5G mmWave support are already slightly concerning...

Though I am pleased with return of wireless charging and headphone jack - those two additions to Xperia 1 would've made it an absolute peach!

Hi,

As far as I'm aware it will support 4k recording @ 60fps (max)

Also this time around, Sony has RAW file type for pics which was never previously.

Leaks all seem accurate.

Xperia Pro looks interesting but won't be offered in Europe.

No mention of SD card slot which is crazy when the phone is targeted at multimedia users. 256GB could get filled with 4K stuff pretty quick!

It will have support for SD card up to 1tb, possibly more as I believe UFS 2.1 can support upto 2tb even if the phone is listed as max support below this, I think it's just what is the max SD card at the time the phone is released

But the good thing about Sony is they have the hvec codec .265 as well which reduces the 4k file size by like 40% or so from .264.

I'm excited to see more from this phone, but it feels like the Coronavirus is going to severely impact the sales of this phone. Not having a presence at MWC means no hands on preview videos from tech reviewers, and there's the logistics of the physical manufacturing which I'm sure it's going to slow the production down too.

They need to get some preview handsets out to reviewers so they can at least keep the momentum and hype going, otherwise this will fizzle away by the time the release date rolls round.

Liking the camera tech on this one, but I'm not sure about the 21:9 form factor, too narrow?
I'd buy the pro in a heartbeat though, for my A7r2, Sony should include hdmi on both phones imo, make photography the centre of anything they do in the mobile space. That could be their unique selling point, Alpha tech and camera connectivity....

Sony seem to have banked on people using their phones mainly for streaming services, ie movies, hence the tall form factor. But in my experience most people have general usage with reading content being most use case and not movies, I would rather watch movies on TV or larger screen with better sound, why would i use 6" phone.

I don't get their logic, the phone is too cramped for comfortable reading in my experience.

That's like saying "another laptop with Windows. Boring!". How exactly do you magic up a new operating system in an incredibly saturated and deep-rooted market with decades of development behind it? I would hazard to say that creating a brand new OS, and hoping it to gain any sort of significant traction in today's market is near impossible, outside of having some outlier factor like being a Chinese company and having access to billions of potential adopters, but even then, you face the challenge of getting the rest of the global market adopting it too.

And the most important factor to mobile OS growth is app development and support. What would entice an app developer to develop for new OS XYZ, when they could just develop for Android/iOS? This is exactly why Windows's mobile OS died.

Exactly my thoughts. Windows phones were rubbish. I had one given to me as a work phone. It was like a poor man's android. Saying that since the Google ban Huawei have been thinking about it. Harmony OS rings a bell. I think even they would struggle outside of China with it.

So there seems to be a MK2 device tested and it seems Sony really is listening to their feedback.

It would seem that the MK2 will support UFS 3.0 and 2 of the cameras used in the Samsung S20 range will be used in the MK2, I think the front and ultrawide possibly, so 2 Samsung cameras in a Sony phone.

Not only that but the Samsung S20 main camera uses a Sony IMX 555 camera sensor, while the MK2 will be the first phone to use the Sony IMX 557 sensor.

It is definitely shaping up to be a powerhouse of a device and it ticks all the boxes so far. I just hope the software built for all this is all good too.

Hardware is only good as the software for it. Otherwise software if it isn't good can't take advantage of the hardware.

exactly, where are the alternatives and why aren’t there any? The market is severely lacking in competition.

Because nothing else can compete in any way whatsoever. Some have tried and failed because they have no real experience with a mobile OS platform and not even the power and money of Microsoft can Shift iOS or Android down the ranks. Android is always evolving though and OEMs are bringing new features every update which Google then put into major releases. You can thank LG, Samsung and Sony for Android ending up the way it has with loads of features and tweaks out the box today. If they didn't exist Android would be very bare.

Not only that but the Samsung S20 main camera uses a Sony IMX 555 camera sensor, while the MK2 will be the first phone to use the Sony IMX 557 sensor.

I hope Sony do something different with the camera than Samsungs because its awful on my S20 Ultra, there are focusing issues all over the places and over sharpening halo's smear every photo. Then there is Samsung fake bokeh / blur effect which is seemingly not possible to turn off or seems to me to be trying to be applied even in normal mode.

I was trying to take a pic of a document last week and on the middle of would stay in focus...

Looks like just another boring android phone to me. Isn’t everyone just sick to death of everything being android now?

Do you not have anything better to do than be continually bitter about Android? It's quite frankly ludicrous considering both Apple & Android devices are made better by the fact the other exists.

Clearly Apple defined the modern smartphone from a UX interaction and application point of view, but since then there's plenty that both sides have taken from each other and/or improved upon which only serves as a benefit to us as consumers.

Just a few off the top of my head:
  • Facial recognition was brought to the table with the Moto Atrix, Apple improved upon that with FaceID which has come to Android phones
  • Notifications - e.g. notification grouping in iOS 12, was introduced in 2016 with Android Nougat
  • Swipe typing/third party keyboards
  • Multiple lens camera setups
  • App extensions was taken from Android's app intents - basically how applications can share data with one another
  • Computational photography such as night mode, pretty much pioneered by Google on the Pixel when it comes to mobile phone photography at least. We're not just talking multi exposures here as that's old hat in actual cameras, but using the camera shake to aid calculating how to reduce blur when zooming & cropping
If Apple ever sort Siri out so it's a serious competitor to the Google Assistant (which I question will ever happen due to the head start Google have with data across the web/knowledge graph) and they improve CarPlay (like stop forcing other apps to follow their design choice, which is why the Google Maps experience on CarPlay lacks behind Android Auto) - I honestly could see me going back to Apple for the 1st time since 2010.

Your getting the bokeh due to the larger than average size of the sensor and large aperture.

I came across this after looking for an android phone in the high end price bracket. Was considering the huawei p40 pro but the lack of gms put me off. Oppo find x2 was a contender but I actually prefer this should it be priced reasonably.

Finally sold my S20 ultra so I'm ready and waiting for this as soon as reviews go up.
Things I like the sound of, the camera system, Samsung got it so wrong this time, I really didn't like the camera and it is the camera that decides my choice of phone at upgrade time. I like the idea of some of the alpha tech from my A7 series cameras finally making it to their phones.
Im interested in their camera app though manual mode with that sensor size might be interesting, the headphone jack is always useful as well.
Im seeing lots of news about v4 of their headphones, what's the betting they throw them in for preorders?

I am still very excited for this phone to see how it is. I was interested in purchasing one but I prefer the pixel line.
