Spartacus: Blood and Sand

Slowly catching up with this on Bravo and enjoying it. Although would all the Gladiators be so ridiculously ripped on an inevitably terrible diet? Makes me feel ickle :(

Ripped yes, muscular...doubtful imo, although people selected as gladiators would mostly have been 'genetically blessed'. Working the body constantly as they would have would have inevitably resulted in denser muscles irrespective of diet.

In any case it's hardly designed to be realistic, just fun :D.

I have an old book somewhere called Medical Curiosities that I bought in the 70s and they're basically Doctors notes/pictures from the 1800's.
One section is about muscular people with a fraction of muscle that we see in competitions today and they were considered curiosities.

I recorded the lot on Sky+ a while ago now and I haven't been to bothered about watching it until yesterday and today. My lord was I sucked in I couldn't stop watching it, the gore wasn't like anything I have ever seen before in any film or television series. The acting wasn't bad either as that can be hit and miss generally, gutted about having to wait for the second series next year though.

Andy Whitfield, star of Starz's "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," has been advised by his doctors to immediately resume aggressive treatment for a recurrence of cancer, as a result of which he will not be returning for the series' second season, which was tentatively set to air in September 2011.

"It's with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as Spartacus and all the wonderful people involved. It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey. Thank you sincerely for the support so far," said Whitfield.
