Don't do it. Every 'laser doctor' Ive ever seem wears glasses.

I know two surgeons personally who have had it done.

bang goes your theory. ;)

If it aint good enough to risk his career it aint good enough to risk mine.

I dunno...is your career in the four-figures-a-day range?

No but perhaps the next aircraft you get on I will sign off with my dodgy eyesight.

Regardless of figures my measly 25p per hour is as significant to my mortgage as his four figures. :p

perhaps a more appropriate comparison would then be 'if you chose not to fly, would you expect others to doubt your professional abilities and the safety of your industry?'

I know a guy who builds nissans. he drives an old merc...does this mean there is something wrong with nissans?

at this point, I feel it appropriate to mention that of the surgeons I know who have not had surgery and who also wear glasses, all but one have very low prescriptions or are not suitable for the procedure. the one with a medium prescription is in his sixties and the natural degredation that everyone suffers in later years means that there is little point in him undergoing surgery.

I think a more appropriate guage of whether those who do the work trust the surgery itself is that my girlfriend of the last five years is more than happy for me or any of her family to undergo the procedure...and here comes the important part: if the surgery is appropriate for us. it isnt for everyone and some people just can't have it.

Whole different thread, for the record I hate flying with a passion, the standards are falling through the floor and sooner or later a budget airline is going to make a smoking hole in a city somewhere.

Hopefully thats put your mind at rest.

That was my reaction when he told me. Personaly, I don't think I would be able to bring myself to getting sergery like that on something as important as my eyes in a developing country, no matter what the price.

Moorfield Eye Hospital in London is the best place to get it done. Not the cheapest place, but not a massive premium to pay for the extra piece of mind.

I second that mum had it done there a few years ago(10ish). They pioneered the surgery and while my mum was there were allot or people referred there after it had gone wrong at other hospitals from all over the world. It might cost extra but you only have one set of eyes.

Ooo that's expensive :(

I've got a real sqeamish side and reading all this has made me want to get it done but put me off at the same time, despite me sticking my fingers in my eyes for the last 15 years with contact lenses...

price depends on your prescription...

I'd say go along to your local OE for no-obligation consultaton. ask them what they would recommend.

Do you know how secure the flap on your eye is after it's put back, does it completely reseal?
Really hoping to get this done sometime soon, I hate glasses and contacts are annoying and can float around slightly or come out too easily, was sparring the other day ant my sanshou class, got punched in the face and one fell out :( But i'd rather that than have part of my eye suddenly hanging off.

will give a definitive answer when my gf gets back later but from what I recall, it takes a short while for the flap to heal which is why you get goggles to wear at night (to stop you touching them) and are under strict instructions TO LEAVE THEM THE **** ALONE!!!! ;)

a guy I work with keeps spouting off something along the lines of "my mates friend had it done and the laser slipped and burned his face!!!!1" which other than showing complete ignorance of the procedure and the laser, and idiocy, really does nothing to help put peoples minds at rest.

as I've already said, my girlfriend has experience of over 5,000 procedures and due to our relationship, she has my best interests in mind.

if she says she would be absolutely fine with me having eye surgery then I trust her.

I think it might be next year when I have a bit more spare cash saved up because the procedure au choix is a bit more expensive, but that extra bit to clean up against halo'ing and glare at night sounds like the way forwards.

But I'll video the whole lot on my phone and post it up in shonky 10-second clips :D

I've been thinking about this for the last year but after reading your comments I think I feel a lot more reassured so I've booked a consultation for tomorrow at 4pm. Hopefully I'll be suitable (only a bit blind, -1.75 and -2.00)
