It may not be Champagne but I went on a tour and tasting at Nyetimber in West Sussex on Saturday and ended up buying a selection of their Champagne English Sparkling Wine. Firstly, the vineyard and outbuildings are absoluetly stunning, it's a beautiful setting. Led by Brad Greatrix, who along with his wife is the winemaker at Nyetimber, the tour was very interesting, and I was able to have a good chat with him. They only grow the classic Champagne grapes, make it in the traditional method, and use only estate grown grapes. We could see that the grapes were still small and green becuase of the bad summer, they're not at 'veraison' yet, so the outlook for this year is not looking promising.
We tasted 3 of their wines, the first being the just released 2010 Classic Cuvee which is their standard bottle of sparkling wine. We also tried the Rose and the Demi-Sec which were both good although the Rose wasn't quite up with the Billecart Salmon Brut Rose which is a similar price and fantastic.
I ended up buying a couple of bottles of the 2010 Classic Cuvee which is lovely and worth every penny of £25. I also picked up a couple of bottles of the Blanc de Blanc 2007 and the Tillington Single Vineyard 2009 which I'm looking forward to trying.
Not Champagne, but still very good.
