Star Trek Online

Just downloaded this and had a play around with it, I can't remember at what point to you pick your ship class, Science, Escort, Cruiser?

Kimbie

You get to pick a ship when you get promoted, you arn't locked into them for the rest of the game though.

The skill point thing has changed, there is no longer seperate skills for Escorts, Science and Cruiser, so you can switch from escort to science and cruiser if you wanted without respecing your character.

Many things like that has changed such as now there is no longer seperate ones for Phaser, Disrupter, Plasma etc.

I thought I'd pick up the M.A.C.O. Resilient Shield Array last night and give it a whirl on my Fleet Escort, which before was running the AEGIS Covarient Shield, and I have to tell you, the M.A.C.O. shield after the new set rebalance patch has been buffed up to the best shield in the game for Tactical Captains. From testing it out on some STF's it became clear to me why:

- Resilient Shield has a 5% absorption/5% bleedthrough compared to 10% bleedthrough for AEGIS

- Over 6,000 capacity for a resilient shield is phenomenal with the addition to your Shield Emitter skill increases and Field Generator will provide over 10,000 capacity per shield facing, identical if not more than AEGIS

- "Reduces All Energy Damage to Shields by 10%" 'nuff said.

- "Reduces Plasma Damage by 20%" - This was changed so it applies to hull and shield.

- "When receiving All Energy Damage, applies Power Conduit Link" basically, this means that when taking any type of damage, Power Conduit Link is activated a maximum of 5 times over a period of 1 second per activation. This provides a maximum of +10 to all power settings.

The Power Conduit Link is fantastic for people running full power to weapons like myself. The additional +10 benefits DPS, shield regeneration, engine speed, and aux buffs. The last one being the most important. This means that combined with the Red Matter Capacitor, my shield and hull heals are more potent, and with the addition of Auxiliary Battery means my spike heals will bring my ship back from near death. Coupled with Multi-Regenerative Shield Array and Autonomous Regeneration Sequencer from 3 of the 4 Borg sets, the stigma of being a glass cannon fades away completely.

I honestly don't know how long this shield will have these uber stats, but it's the first of the new STF sets that actually surpass the older Borg/AEGIS sets.

For any of the guys who use cruisers: how do you do it?

I'm a Commander and currently have two ships. One is the Heavy Cruiser (Stargazer), the other is the Heavy Escort (Akira), but it seems to me that the latter is the superior ship, even with an Engineer character. Although it's more fragile and has a lower crew compliment, the increased speed, maneouverability and firepower more than makes up for it, whereas with the HC I can't turn fast enough nor escape when things get a bit too hairy. I understand that their role is to be more of a tank, but even purchasing the best equipment I can it still seems to be pointless trying to get involved in any fights with it. :(

Can anyone offer any tips? I'm approaching the next promotion point and would like to purchase the Galaxy class (loved TNG), but obviously if I'm not going to be able to use it properly then there's no point. :o

has any one got a torrent link to the latest client ? plz

+1
The user account system is probably the most ill-thought out I've found yet (Why the heck we need a login name, nickname, handle and a blimming character name I don't know), and the client downloader is similarly bad :(
Slow as anything, and not even a resume feature.

I'm nowhere near qualified to help but I did have a quick look on the official forum and found this post about tier 2 cruisers which may help you understand how to use them.

This was the one I was thinking of for my Defiant refit, would you recommend going full M.A.C.O. set or mix them up? My character is a science officer going from the Aegis set and I've only started the grind for STF gear.

To be honest the Cruiser doesn't really come into it's own until you get to T4/T5, in the early levels it's woefully underpowered. But once you get to T4/T5 you'll have 8 weapon points and it becomes a bit more potent, along with the increased hull. Cruisers are not meant to be zippy. Their usual loadout is 3 beams + Torpedo front, and 3 beams + Mines rear. The basic idea of them is that you broadside your foes so you can hit with all the beams. This is often easier than trying to line up forward facing cannons with a 90 degree firing arc.

As an Engineer you do get some quite good skills.. Rotate Shield Frequency being one of the best, later on you'll get Miracle Worker. It's still a little early but you can get some Bridge Officers with skills to complement the Cruiser.

But in the end it comes down to your play style. If you enjoy zipping about and doing a lot of damage, then Tactical and Escort might be more your route. Engineer is more your tank role.. Hold aggro, take punishment, but you don't move to fast.

One of the good things with the new skill system is that you are not tied to one ship now. If you think an Escort is your thing then you can still use one.

I have an Engineer with a Defiant, and another with an Excelsior.. they're both good... it's a mainly a matter of how you want to play.

Thanks for that. I can give that a go when I move to Captain, I guess. I've got some engineering BOs but they're not great at the moment, so I suppose I'll have to look for some others. Possibly also try to get out of the Escort mindset for a while. If I don't like it, I'll just stick to Escorts; the Defiant was a nifty little ship after all. :p

I'm quite tempted to roll a second character and go down the Science route, too. Haven't tried one of those yet, but some of them look quite interesting and playing a supporting role in big fights would be quite cool.

How does one go about joining the OcUK fleet on there? :)
