Star Trek Online

It's very very dull, very easy and you're just mindlessly clicking bad guys until they die. Am I missing something? Does it get a bit more involved later on?

Is there any way to make it so that your attacks are recurring like in dragon age or do you have to just shoot, wait, shoot, wait, shoot, wait?

Anyone?

I'm going to give the beta a 2nd chance over the weekend, so to prepare, can anyone tell me what the differences is between the 3 ship types? I know that science vessels have more sciences stations, escort more tactical and the other type i assume has a balance. But is there a difference in terms of weapon capabilities, functionality things like that?

Also, unrelated to gameplay, what is the backstory to STO? I've read it is set 30 years after star trek nemesis, but I havn't found out if that includes the the alternate timeline of the latest star trek film where vulcan is destroyed. Also, from the screenshots I've seen of combat, it seems the federation is fighting against Klingon ships, which I assume means that they federation and Klingons are at war? and since Klingon is an unlockable playable faction, I assume that is how PvP will take place, by just fighting when they encounter eachother?

You are roughly right about the main differences between the types of ship, crusiers have more engineering stations than escorts or science though, not a balance.
Only real difference in weapon abilities is that only escorts can equip cannons (think of the Defiants phasers from DS9) and only science ships can target subsystems. Crusiers have more spare power and crew so they repair faster.

As for backstory, its set in 2409 and the offical website has a nice "Path to 2409" story although they don't seem to have finished it yet. Theres also a page explaining the game's relation to the new movie, short version - it's set in the prime universe after Nero and Spock are gone.

You can put phasers and such on autofire (right click them, icon should gain a green outline) but not torpedoes

Combat does seem to get a bit more involving once you get into a better ship and get more abilities.

ah right does that still work if you in and out of the rear phasers firing arc?

Cruisers can also fit cannons (unless they have changed it, to escorts only.)

Cannons have a small firing arc
Phasers have a larger firing arc

Personally gonna go for a T2 Escort - I need some damned maneuverability, the miranda feels like a tank, T2 cruisers are even slower at turning!

OT - Wouldn't happen to be Furb from DAoC/Prydwen, would you? :p

No mate I',m not :)

So is there any plans for a fleet from anyone? would be nice to have people to chat to from the start?

Well now i feel really shafted and boogered ....

I asked Steam about the sudden price drop and they have refunded the full price and removed STO from my steam account - so now what happens to the sub i paid ? can i register a new code under the same sub or have Steam screwed up my account completely ????

Hopeing if i re-purchase i can simply add the new code to my account or i wil be displeased to say the least.

Anyone know if you can register more than one key code to the same account ?

Well, that's me out, I gave it a good chance. Very very dull, can't believe people will be paying monthly to play it. I suppose it's just not my thing.

Honestly not sure, haven't used autofire much. Would hope it does otherwise its pointless.

You can put one fore and one aft weapon on autofire. As soon as you fire once at a target it will keep firing or waiting to fire until the target comes back into it's fire arc. I tend to keep my aft mounted turret on autofire as it has a 360 arc and my 180 arc front disruptor cannons.

Cruisers can also fit cannons (unless they have changed it, to escorts only.)

I think only escorts can fit certain types of cannon. In general a cannon will have a smaller firing arc (180-45) and do more damage than the equivilant beams. Cannon also have a shorter drop off range so you need to be closer to do more damage. Cruisers generally just don't have the manoeverability to keep a small fire arc weapon on target at close range.

OK seams got a result on pre-order from Steam :)

Asked for refund of the price difference from last week to now (£10 price drop in 7 days) and they refunded the full amount and removed game from my Steam account.

Re-purchased at the cheaper price and game instantly added back on to Steam account without re-downloading.

Logged onto STO account and everything is as it was including save game etc.

So anyone who pre-purchased on Steam - ask for a refund and after you get it confirmed by Steam CS re-purchase it and save £10 (takes about 24 hours for Steam to confirm refund & 3-5 working days to credit back bank)

http://www.startrekonline.com/fiction if you're so inclined.

The basic jist is, as you say, it takes on from after Nemesis and the Star Trek Countdown comic (Which was the companion to the new movie).

The game exists in the original timeline, not the new JJ Abrams one. So the game fiction recognises that the star in the hobus system imploded, taking most of the system and Romulus with it, causing Nero to go back in time. However Vulcan hasn't been destroyed in this one as that would take place in the alternate timeline (After Nero travelled back to it).

Edit: And here's an article that answers your question exactly. :D http://www.startrekonline.com/startrek_xi
