Star Trek Online

Ok just got my escort kitted out with some mkII canons, damage is very nice and being able to turn fast is great but they are very very squishy.

I was expecting to be able to target subsystem like shields or weapons etc and then take them out. Im level 8 but i havent come across this so far. Can you infact do this at any point in the game?

Some of the bridge officer skills can do it and I think the science vessel has the ability to do it too.

Can someone please explain to me what the actual game is about. With SWG, WOW, Conan and WAR I sort of understood what I was doing and why I was doing it, but with STO I am struggling to actually see the point of the game.

I cant quite seem to grasp what the actual content is, can I not beam down or fly to Earth and walk about or am I stuck to the one Starbase? Does not seem to be any real good v bad or red v blue going on, I seem to be playing a single player game that wants to charge me for doing so, I was so looking forward to this and have not cancelled my pre order yet but I need someone to clarify what you can actually do in game apart from a quick space battle and a quick run in an area on foot or is that it?

I had a look at the stats and cannons seem to have much better DPS than normal phasers, but due to the smaller arc you can't hit with both front and rear weapons at the same time, so wouldn't a broadside from all lasers be more damaging than just the cannons at the front or rear but never both?

The Escort tends to have more weapon slots up front at T2. So my Escort has 3 fore slots and one aft. Pop a turret in the aft slot, 2 cannons and a torp in the front and the damage is quite nasty. Especially with the Lt Bridge Officer skill that rapid fires your cannons.

I think the game plays more like a single player game with some online interaction, rather than a traditonal mmo, or thats what the early lvls feel like to me anyway there has been no real need for parties and fleet actions and secure missons are just random ppl.

Got a beta key and dloaded it last night.

The gaming experience was Much like the previous failed MMO Pirates on the burning sea..

I CTD after about 2h and thought thats enough for me.

Space combat is "ok" all be it childishly boring

Away missions totally retarded

I know why thwy are doing life subs - to claw as much as they can b4 it fails hard

The game shows glimpses how good space combat could be with the couple of extra skills you get once you get to 11 with your new ship - an extra space skill for you and 2 new skills with the extra bridge officer slot tier 2 ships have. Group space combat is more interesting and tactics do start to emerge.

Unfortunately the first 10 'levels' are so dull they put most people off and rightly so, they really are dull once you get over the "cool, it's Star Trek" newness.

The lack of any replayability by using alts is also a disadvantage, there is very little difference between playing the game as a Science officer, engineer or tactical because you have access to eveyone's skills through the use of your bridge officers and because you can choose to fly any class of ship as you advance through the ranks.

This is my biggest gripe with the game. I've never been one for constantly playing a single toon once it's at the cap, i enjoy alts too much and they're what keep me playing MMOs for decent lengths of time. If the skill system stays the same as it has for the first 11 levels then that part will get dull rather quickly as i found myself putting points into things i couldn't care less about simply because the game makes you use every last one just to advance in tier. No matter what initial class you pick it will be the same for the most apart other than your ground skills.
