Star Trek Online

Tried Cruiser and Escort so far, will try science in a bit. Out of the two i'm liking cruiser more, Escort has ridiculous damage but feels too cumbersome compared to the Klingon Bird of Prey, Cruiser is slow moving but it can dish out decent damage and more to the point its still in the thick of things blasting away where the Escort would be heading back from respawn :p

noob question - but i dont often dable with beta's before retail. Once retail hits, will i have to re-do all the work i have done so far, or can i just continue with were i end up at the end of the beta??

i cant seem to download the installer, either ie7 wont do it or my downloader just wont work, plus i would have to get so far then have to start again.

think i will just wait to buy it

My main gripe is the Guild Wars style instancing, as much as I like some aspects it never (to me anyway) feels like a proper mmo. I really dont like the whole sector space thing either, I want actual space!

Yeah I agree, open space would be much more immersive and I cant see the reasons behind doing it the way they have.

Enjoying it so far, still only got the first ship as I'm only lv6. Do new ships cost energy points or something else? I know I can't get a new ship til I increase in rank but it would be good to know what to save up with.

Anyone know how the Bind-On Equips work? I have some shields I got as a reward from a mission worth about 7500 in sell value. I gather if they are used, they perminately attatched to the ship, but are they in addition to standard equip shields?

I was online earlier, but yeah atm I get a "Server Busy" message. :(

From one of the dev's on the STO forum:

This is really amazing! We have hit the limit of how many players we can fit on the server right now!

This is one of those times where we're both sad, and glad. On the one side, you all enjoy the game so much, we can't squeeze anyone else on to the server. (I can't log in right now either! )

On the other side, we really want to let you all on the server! So, here's what we're working on:

1) We're increasing server capacity. We have new machines coming in to add to the server, and we've put a rush order on them. We're going to bring them online as soon as we can.

2) We're working on software solutions as well. Our development team is working night and day to be able to get as much power as we can from each machine, and we're focusing on increasing capacity, and server stability.

For now, all we can say is, please keep trying. We know it's frustrating. Please keep trying though. You never know when you might be able to get in!

You get one ship for free when you reach 11, you get given a Starship token to buy whichever you want. If you want one or both of the other ship types I think they cost the other currency unit, Starfleet merits (I think that's the name for them anyway not the energy units, can't login at the moment to check).

The bind on equip just means you can't trade the item on the exchange once you equip it, you can take them off your ship and then sell them via your replicator for energy units still and put some other shield type in if you like. They are not in addition to your current shields, if you press 'U' and then click on your ship name you can see it's inventory and what goes where.

Aye, although just to correct since you couldn't log in, it's the general credits that you spend on the extra ships. If you picked the Escort for example, the Science and Cruiser vessels would cost 20,500 credits each.

Only use so far I've found for Merits is for candidates and officers for your ship.

Cheers for that Flibby, i can never be arsed trawling through Cryptic forum when there are problems as each page turn tends to take 20 seconds ish. Was the same in CO, youd think they'd learn to host their webpages somewhere that can cope with 10s of thousands of people at once.

I'd love to know the numbers that they're dealing with in this game as i imagine it's more than the norm for new games. I wouldn't say millions like people tend think means competitive but i'd hazard a guess that it has similar amount of interest that AoC did (ignore how fail it was in the first year, it was still one of the most anticipated games of recent years).
