Reading some of these comments; I'm confused whether I'm watching the same show!

So the captain of the ship, simply hands it over to a retired admiral after all the bluster previously sprouted?

I did think the exact same thing. a lot of stuff is not realistic, but on the whole season 3 has been much better. But being much better does not make it very good. It just means season 1 and 2 was really bad.

Season 1 and 2 was beyond bad, its was only a bit better than Discovery so in real terms one and two were about 0.5-1 out of 10.

Also Picard porked the Dr he should have known not to mess around with Gingers as nothing good ever comes of it :)

I was wondering about that, especially after he'd said Picard was basically like an honorary Admiral. That said I imagine most of his crew hates him so happy to listen to Picard?

Yes, yet more crap writing and totally unnecessary in terms of the fluidity, I imagine all the little flair ups and temper tantrums of a qualified captain will go on for the remainder of the season. Damm its given me negative vibes already.

It's weird, almost feels like Star Trek but here comes Raffi's storyline involving drugs, seedy bars and someone gets decapitated.... :)

And why did the Captain just concede command so easily in the end? That was weird.

the way i se it is that while he thinks that it just Picard and riker out on some sort of a jolly, he can afford to **** them off as there not much picard can do. but once he finds out that jack is picards son. he know that if he doesn't do what he can to save him, that Picard while retired has enough clout within star fleet, to end the career of the man that did nothing to save his son

Trouble with that is the way season 1 started it showed he had no clout whatsoever. But if we pretent this is the old picard from TNG and not Season 1 and 2 picard then it would make more sense I guess :p

Got to say when i heard Amanda Plumber was going to be the baddie for the season it was like.. errrr ok.. However, i did actually like what i saw so far, she actually reminded me a bit of Khan mixed with with someone else that i cant quite put my finger on..

Picard ASKED the captain to take him to the edge of the neutral zone, the captain refused his REQUEST.

Picard later pulled rank and ORDERED the crew to belay the captains order.

Picard is still an admiral as proven when he was carrying out an official inspection of the ship (albeit a lie!)

Retired though, that was made clear.

Pretty sure retired people don't outrank you.

And also when the roles have been reversed on the enterprise they’ve always followed Picard as captain, although it does seem this crew aren’t a huge fan of their captain.

However by the end of S2 the tired, defeated Picard from the start of S1 who had failed to organise the Romulan evac and burned a lot of his prestige with Star Fleet by continuing to push for it after the Mars disaster and the rights of the artificial life forms had from memory:
proven the artificial life forms had not by their own choice blown up the Mars shipyards, and then managed to negotiate a deal with the biggest of Star Fleet's enemies, the Borg.
Both of which required/resulted in entire fleets of ships showing up to assist (and IIRC Picard was basically in charge from the start in S2), which indicates even when he was not in favour with Star Fleet Command and couldn't get a ship himself, he and Riker were still popular enough/had enough power to get huge numbers of captains to divert their ships to assist when he put out a call for help under specific conditions at the end of S1, and that there was no real question when the events of S2 started that he was to be in charge.

Basically he's redeemed himself by S3 in the eyes of at the very least many of Star Fleet's officers as he was proven right about one of the biggest disasters in it's history, managed to stop yet another major threat to them (making peaceful contact with the androids whilst finding the threat from the others), then managed to basically make friends with the Borg.

The Picard seen at the start of S1 wouldn't have been asked by Star Fleet to take part in official ceremonies as he was a burned out embarrassment and reminder of what they once were, and he didn't want to take part in them, by the start of S3 it's accepted he'll be doing it.

IIRC it's not unknown in Star Trek, even just the TV continuity for a captain of a ship to place it in the service of an admiral at times, even if it's not commanded to by Star Fleet, one of the things that's been shown repeatedly is that a Star Fleet captain is much like an old naval sea captain with a huge amount of discretion in their actions as long as they're not actively on a schedule or they believe something has come up that is more important.
There is also the whole thing about Shaw's eval reports that implies that Shaw wasn't normally good under stress/would cave if given the choice, whilst Shaw's entire onscreen personality and interactions with the crew suggests that normally he wasn't a risk taker or particularly good with the crew and was actively disliked (but obeyed because he was the captain), which leads to the potential for him to decide that as it was put he didn't want to be remembered as the captain who refused to do anything to try and prevent the death of two of Star Fleet's legends (I'm reminded a little of Generations there, but it's been a very long time since I saw it).

Good points. Thing is I remember very little from S1 & 2. With season 2 I watched it with a hell of a lot of skipping. Only thing I enjoyed was Q's entrance and him transforming from young to old.

Retired, but he was on duty. Dunno, might be a Starfleet thing or it was a plot hole, i still enjoyed the moment.

In a place where aliens, Warp drive and transporting living matter is the norm, i'm not going to lose sleep over rank etiquette.
