The Spock close up and eyebrow raise was perfectly in keeping with the original. If you weren't aware this episode was a retelling of the TOS Balance of Terror but with Pike instead of Kirk. If you haven't seen it it's worth watching to get the changes and what causes the war etc.

All of those little camera push-ins, the way characters were lit, the timing of the camera pan, all of it cribbed so hard from the direction on "Balance of Terror" that Vincent McEveety should have gotten a nod in the credits

Absolutely. I was grinning at all the little nods and winks to the episode, I don't think they could have done it any better. Especially loved all the face lighting focusing on the eyes. That was such a classic TOS move.

Well call me surprised.. The best star trek show since the last voyager. Great stuff, enjoyed every episode.

I actually think for a first season this show really hits the ground running, voyager was a bit didge first season, in fact improved greatly when they dumped Kes and got 7, the 7/tuvok interactions were superb.
this show is jumping at the start.
Very much enjoyed old school episodic startrek.

It does help that even ignoring the previous takes on the characters they'd already had a season of Discovery to figure out half of the main cast.

Only seen a clip of this on youtube, kirk shows up with robotic mining ships and apparently the ability for the romulans to scan ships to determine their offensive\defensive capabilities doesnt exist in this..Is that what actually transpires in that episode? Wut?

Not seen a single episode of this so far, but if thats the level of writing that ships arent able to scan eaach other now i doubt im missing much.
