Star Trek : Strange New Worlds

When leaving means going home to face a court martial over breaking the Prime Directive...

'Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven'.
seems like he had a punishment worse than death already.
no doubt starfleet prisons or whatever are more humane

I don't believe the story ever claimed that he was in a particularly great frame of mind. Is it so hard to believe that someone would choose reigning over a primitive society instead of being jailed by an advanced one?

Honestly yes.
They could have do ne way more with this type of episode.

the guy litertally lives in building with what was it 5 guards and absolutely n o purpose or meaning? how many people were doing work about 3?
He could have atleast been ruling over something meaningful, had a proper reason to stay like a family.

Who did he let do the starfleet sign thing? when would they have had time even... it's not like anyone their seemingly had any free time to do what they want

It should have been way more fleshed out, maybe spend less on CGI asteroids and get more extras on the planet and give it a bit more depth

even SG1 did it better.

It's like one of us giving up modern society and going to live in a cave thousands of miles from society rather than being in a modern prison or whatever.

They didn't even try to make out like he made the Starfleet symbol to try and get rescued, but got driven mad by the planet, nothing seems to suggest it. quite the opposite

Is your main argument then that you wanted to see more of the society on Rigel VII to help add context to Zac's choices? 'cause on that we can agree - I guess if they'd jettisoned the B-plot on board the Enterprise then they could have had the runtime to do so, but in ~1hr (and on a not-Disco Trek television budget!) it's not altogether straightforward.

So EP1 had no Pike, and EP3 is just one regular cast member...bit strange.
This was already mentioned and not all that strange to be honest.

Anions partner had just had a baby and so he took paternity leave
As filmed non linearly, he'll with be out different stories or bits of episodes.

Trek always worked in Stories about single bridge crew members as well.

Strange New Worlds 2x05 - "Charades"

A shuttle accident leads to Spock's Vulcan DNA being removed by aliens, making him fully Human and completely unprepared to face T'Pring's family during an important ceremonial dinner.

*sigh*

The Good

Hooray for continuity, and Roger Korby getting name-checked. Chapel ends up marrying him (see TOS' "What Little Girls Are Made Of"). Also in HFC - Vulcans taking suppressants to deal with the smell of humans was established back in Enterprise (see "The Andorian Incident").
Lots of fantastic little character moments throughout for many of the cast. Spock and Chapel getting the majority of them, but almost everyone got some screentime this week.
That scene just before the opening credits was great - the Spock POV as he's waking up, the explanation of what happened, the TOS-esque musical cue, Spock staring in shock at his now-human reflection...and then a return to modern Trek, with the curse cut short by the opening credits :p
Anson Mount still the best thing to happen to Trek on TV in forever.
The VFX team had another good 'un. So did the costume department.
The folks coming up with the episode titles are having some fun this season, with "Charades" referring to the effort in hiding Spock's changed nature from his future in-laws, he and Chapel dancing around their mutual attraction until the end of the episode and the game itself that Pike suggests while vamping for time during the ceremony.

The Bad

In my post about "The Serene Squall" in S1 I noted that there had been better examinations of Spock's identity as a Vulcan/Human/both/neither than that episode. The effort here isn't troubling the top 10 list either, some moments notwithstanding.
Honestly, as good as a lot of it is, this episode at times did really feel reminiscent of the worst excesses of the Berman-Braga era. Magic Fun Time With DNA™, character acting out of character due to alien influence, important event for that character going on at the same time, Magic Fun Time With DNA™ reversed with the contents of a hypospray...
Not wild about Mia Kirshner's portrayal of Amanda, in any of her appearances in STD or here. She's no Jane Wyatt.
I wish we'd gotten more of a look at the Kerkhovians.

The Kurtzman

Still think we've seen far too much of T'Pring, as good as Gia Sandhu is. All it's done is create a plot hole the size of Jupiter in regards to TOS' "Amok Time".
On a related note - Spock and Chapel hooking up. Quite apart from the mess it makes for reconciling it with their relationship in TOS, why is it that modern Trek has to show Spock as being in love with a human? In JJTrek it's him and Uhura. Here, him and Chapel. Was it not enough for the writers to show him as being in a committed engagement with T'Pring?

A bit more musing.

Ethan Peck truly shone this time out, as both Spock and humanSpock. I'm very ready for there to be more scenes with him and Sam Kirk after humanSpock went postal in that meeting
Gonna be a wrench when they write Chapel out so she can go get married to Korby. Unless we really are rolling with the events that kicked off "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" as having altered the timeline enough to separate this from TOS.
So if the alien races of Trek have been stand-ins for Earth cultures (for example, the Klingons have variously been stand-ins for Cold War era Russians and feudal era Japanese), are the Vulcans now stand-ins for strict Indian parents? ;)

Pike doing a 180 with the food when Spock reviled he was human the whole time :cry::cry::cry:
I did lol at this :D

Also, Spock that night:

I really enjoyed that episode. Had the vibes of TOS as others have mentioned. It shows that you can make best part of an hours entertainment without resorting to formulaic, effects driven swash buckling. Jess Bush is also a very attractive woman. Good performances from her and Spock. I wondered if the Star Trek police on here would slate it but pleased to see that most just seemed to have enjoyed for what it was.
