****Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker - Official Thread****

sure it looks ok, but they haven't built anything up for me to be excited about - this is the end of the trilogy but it didn't have much of a beginning and the middle was garbage so what am i supposed to look forward too?

Using Palpatine's laughter in the teaser trailer AND having Ian McDiarmid appear on stage alone immediately following the trailer, is proof they know they had to do something to pull people in. Just imagine he wasn't involved in this, who would care? Watch the trailer again but stop or mute it before you hear his laughter, it's the same old non-event of the previous movies.

I'm not saying it can't be good, JJ might pull off a great reply to Last Jedi. He actually came out this week and confirmed that Rian Johnson came in and did away with everything they had planned and they had to double down and figure it out. Still scratching my head over why no one stopped him at any point...

Just be weary of them using Palpatine to sell the movie. I 100% doubt he'll be alive or even moving around as a force ghost, I think he'll only appear in visions and disembodied voices.

The one thing that would absolutely get me back on board with IX is if Luke wasn't dead. I feel sorry for Mark Hamill so much, of all the original cast he's done more to promote and share the fans love of the franchise than anyone, yet he got absolutely shafted by Kathleen Kennedy and her band of idiots.

I don't think JJ had much choice once Johnson killed off Snoke. There was no time to introduce a new big baddie, and everyone knows the Emperor.

I still don't understand why Snoke was killed off, unless he was mega weak. Then how did he end up running the joint. Does that make Luke even weaker?

Does that mean Kylo is freaking strong as ****!?

If that shot of the Death Star wreckage is on Yavin-4, then surely they're not going to desecrate the war grave of the two million people plus, both military and civilian, that Luke Skywalker killed.

Well that he was ordered to kill, and in all fairness they were killing more than what was on board.

That was just Rian Johnson being a contrarian. He thinks it's being edgy to do unexpected things, but it makes a film the audience hates.

I think they have done a great job passing the franchise on to a new generation and pulling in new fans. My friends and family with children are all seemingly now Star Wars fans who enjoy talking about it and making predictions about what's going to happen next.

For me episodes 7 and 8 are leagues ahead of episodes 1-3 which I find too shiny and cliche. However the Force Awakens was nothing more than a complete rehash of old ideas, a huge let down after the hype for me.

I actually liked the ambition of the Last Jedi to go in a new direction and challenge preconceptions about how Luke Skywalker should have progressed since ROTJ.

I'm sure the latest film will be good enough, but for me the magic of Star Wars is gone. We knew that was going to happen, it was bound to, I dont think anything can go through this amount of commercialisation and remain true to it's humble beginnings.

As for the Rise of Skywalker trailer, bringing back Lando doesn't excite me at all, just seems like another attempt to make headlines by bringing in more of the original cast. To be honest I never thought he was *that * great a character in the originals and now he'll undoubtedly have an over inflated role and importance in the new film. Also bringing back Palpatine doesn't particularly interest me either, it feels like a tactic to gain attention and media interest, just seems a bit of a cheap shot.

Sorry for the rant, hopefully I'll be proved wrong, it's just frustrating that , in my opinion, the only really good Star Wars movie since the originals is Rouge One which proves it can be done!

Quite looking forward to going to the cinema to see this, good brain off space opera stuff. Don't give a rat's ass about all the fandom nonsense. Enjoyed the TFA and TLJ.

Yeah same. Some people stuck in past and almost want R rated starwars films for themselves rather than understand it's aimed a new generation of kids with a bit fan nods for the older generation.

I hated lots of the last jedi and longed for my boyhood hero Luke to smash a million storm troopers and wipe out the Knights of ren and destroy Snoke in a epic lightsabre fight. As the greatest jedi knight

But do kids care about an old men ? Did I care about Obi1 in a New Hope ? Nope it was Luke and the gang.

So we as adults need to let the past go (kill it if you have to :D )

The last Jedi as a film was great. Just not what I wanted it to be. However my kids think it's amazing because they care about the new characters not fan pleasing

Everyone assuming palpatine is actually back. Probably just a force ghost or visions of some kind. I could buy into him surviving though, he was crazily powerful after all.

I hope they give snoke a little more of a nod. His character still doesn’t make any sense.

i'm not even sure i'm going to watch this at the cinema - i still haven't watched solo and i'm not really bothered.

I used to think i was a big star wars fan but know i think i'm just a good film fan - i have my star wars (the good ones) and that will do i think.

Solo was rubbish, so you’re not missing out...I’m with you on this one..the new films are poor and the more people go to the cinema the more they will churn out guff...

Rogue one I thought was excellent...but of course not gooey enough for Disney...

Looking at that poster and Daisy Ridley sends a surge of annoyance into my brain...

Should read my post above and understand it's not aimed at you. It's for a new generation
Actually it was entirely aimed at him and all fans. They blatantly sold the past with this sequel trilogy: 7 was Han+Chewie, 8 was Luke+Leia and now 9 is Lando and Palpatine. I followed the entire production of Force Awakens from the beginning and the whole entire point of Disney's new Star Wars was to capture the original trilogy spirit with real sets and props. This was stated in nearly every interview pre-release by everyone involved.

The Last Jedi as a standalone movie, without the Star Wars brand, was average. The Last Jedi as the 8th story of a 9 part Star Wars saga AND the middle movie of a trilogy, was utter bull that discarded everything from it's own previous movie and the wider Star Wars saga. JJ Abrams himself recently admitted that the plan they had for this trilogy was essentially thrown out by Rian Johnson who was allowed free reign by Kathleen Kennedy.

The problem with this sequel trilogy is that people at the top are completely tone deaf and don't get it. It's not about selling to kids, it's about decision making and good story telling, they're not making R rated movies here, the kids will come regardless. Even after the "forget the past, kill it if you have to" preaching of 8, here they are bringing Palpatine back from the dead to sell the new trailer, because without his laughter at the end, there was nothing to look forward to and absolutely no momentum for the climax of the 9-part saga due to them "killing the past" in their own previous movie.

So mate you sound like a classic 30 - 45 year old who has not dealt with the fact that the original cast have grown old and you can't make a movie based on them

Not sure if you have kids or know kids that have watched it but they love it and love the new cast when you watch the new films you need to watch it with kids eyes.

My daughter looks at Rey as a hero. She could not give two hoots about luke and co.

Yes they said things and yes Ryan Johnson in my view mucked things up big time. Left JJ with nothing to work with. Not surprised they dug up the emperor in some capacity.

I watched the last jedi with other mates who all grew up loving starwars. We were all a tad disappointed with it. When it was released on Blu-ray I watched with my kids and saw it with different eyes. They loved it.

Right so I'm "a typical old guy who can't get over the original cast." All because your daughter likes Rey. Nice one mate.

Listen, I'm glad your daughter liked the movie, truly, but please stop with that nonsense. I have a two year old boy who is obviously too young. However I'm also close to my two nephews (6 and 12) and three nieces (9, 11, 16.) None of them like this Star Wars. The 6 year old nephew went through a Darth Vader period and we got him a Kylo Ren suit, but he's not been interested since Force Awakens. We took the 12 year old to see Last Jedi and he asked his dad to go home half way through, now he's obsessed with Marvell and thinks Star Wars is boring. The girls couldn't care less and when babysitting once, I put Force Awakens on for them and the youngest enjoyed it but has no interest beyond that.

I know we see our kids as the be all end all of everything, but what you said about this new Star Wars not being made for fans is blatantly not true, the opposite infact (as stated in my previous post.) Rogue One itself was ENTIRELY made for fans, so much so it feels like movie fanfiction.

My issue with the new movies has nothing to do with me "not dealing with the cast growing old" and instead has everything to do with poor story telling and terrible franchise management by people that dont get it. I never once expected the original cast would make it out alive or be the pin-ups for the new trilogy. I expected good writing and for their characters to set up the news guys and go out with a bang. I actually thought how Han died worked for Kylo's character, but what they did with Luke and the wider lore on the otherhand was ridiculous and short-sighted.

Seriously, this is how Disney thinks it will get back the hard core fans, bring back baddies that are dead!?

It's entirely plausible he returns as a force ghost, but it just doesn't sit right in the context of him being completely absent in the previous 2 films to just throw him in the 3rd because "reasons" makes it seem like a weak move
