Star Wars VIII : The Last Jedi [WARNING: SPOILERS]

Maybe it's because I never read/saw any of the now non canon stuff where it sounds like Luke was some epic force god.

No not at all, well not until the very last of the books. He got his backside kicked a few times but the strength in the last books came from all of the masters working together. There were other strong masters but he was supposedly the best with a sabre since Windu, but bear in mind that was countless stories from 1993ish to the disney sell out to get to that point. It certainly didn't happen over night and there were many failures along the way.

Thing with Luke is that he was never a good fighter. Even in RoTJ as a Jedi master he was pants.

.

That's more to do with fight choreography at that time, or you could say how bad vader was, his lightsabre skills were terrible :D

And he wasn't a master in ROTJ.

Well I only watched the first trailer to avoid all spoilers and having just come from watching it, that was a car crash. The plot was so badly conceived what were they thinking. I mean the acting was good, the filming was nice the special effects and music great. Everything technical about this film was spot on. The plot was just so incoherent it’s untrue and no one is going to remember Mary Sue’s name because they’ll think Rey instead.

You can’t even see the Marvel films from Lucasfilms they’re that far ahead. I honestly think TFA was better than this and that was a pastiche for millennials.

It wasn’t that is was bad it was just so meh. There was no excitement in the cinema no laughter no awe really flat.

They’re killing Star Wars for me.

Roz from ET sums it up perfectly for me. Dont watch it if you havent watched the movie.

Trouble with TLJ is that it leaves no questions and no cliffhangers worth anticipating in Ep9. JJ's story in TFA wasn't particularly original or solid but he understood that he had to leave enough questions and uncertainties to keep us hooked. TLJ literally throws all of that away, then embarks to void everything until all the setups left by TFA are nulled. All the new trilogy story lines introduced in TFA wrap up and self contain themselves in TLJ while everything new it introduces leads nowhere - Finns storyline, even if removed completely doesn't affect main plot. Poes storyline, even if removed completely doesn't affect main plot. And main plot literally ended. So all we are left with is storylines of new characters, which at the moment - don't really matter on their own?

Suitably disappointed.

I believe it has been mentioned in another post but I am shocked that the storyline to the trilogy is seemingly developed on the fly.

I would have thought that Lucasfilm/Disney or whoever it is that has overall creative control over this trilogy had a beginning, middle and an end mapped out. A basic skeleton of how the story would develop and it was Director's influence to 'flesh' it out.

Reading some of Rian Johnson's 'process' into some of the trilogy defining moments that happened in TLJ it seems clear to me he has no idea what to do until he got the job. In reference to :

Luke's cantankerous personality and ultimate demise

He apparently came up with this idea and had it signed off at Lucasfilm. I simply do not understand the decision. I completely get it that some people feel that what happened was a natural evolution of the story, but it stinks of a company not understanding its fan base at all if they didnt consider that maybe it would dramatically split the audience (which it has). A risk too far for an industry designed to make money. What the hell were they thinking?

In its own right its not a disaster of a movie, but in respect of the Star Wars universe it is, audience expectation is that much higher now than it was when the OT came out. The SW universe has been developed so much with so much lore and backstory that you cannot just drop a bomb on huge aspects of it and expect people not to question why.

This is why people didnt need to know much about Palpatine's backstory when Vader chucked him down a pit, but in a Universe where every character and mention in canon has a backstory and some element of lore now you cant go killing one of the main antagonists (Snoke)without letting the audience know who the hell he is

There is a massive amount of investment in the characters and what people perceive them to be and that needs to be respected.

Rian Johnson failed to do that, and now we are in a situation where JJ has to look at a toilet bowl that Johnson has exploded his diarrhoea into and wonder how he can manufacture something respectable for Episode IX (No Hope) out of the corpse of what has been left.

Why do rebels insist on attacking walkers head on. A unit that can literally only fire straight in front of itself. These are the real questions!

Because they still have a wide arc of fire (e.g. the head turns), so even if you went left or right you would still be hit - plus would take twice as long to go around

The more I think about the film now, the more I get annoyed...

What are the chances of Snoke somehow returning for the next film, despite all that has happened? I refuse to believe someone can die so easily as that.

so iv'e seen the movie twice and noticed so many things that just spoilt the film i came out feeling dissapointed
1. One X-Wing fighter can take on a dreadnought and had no shields (but yet the rebel ship had shields).
2. Princess Lea is now superwomen, and somehow survived space reeeeally disney really!!! and no decompression when they opened the door.
3. They kill off Snoke, we don't know anything about him where hes from why have him as the bad guy? and yet he's so POWERFUL but couldn't notice the light-saber moving.
4. You don't see rey escape into the falcon but yet she's on crait (apparently stole snoke ship)
5. So apparently ray parents are just drunk people who sold her for money (face-palm)
6. Luke was so out of Character and if he was going to die why didn't he just go to crait anyway!, it would have been so much better story if he used the force to raise the x-wing out of the ocean and fly there, also seeing as the blue light-saber got destroyed why didn't Kylo-Ren notice?
7. Snokes ship could destroy the escape pods that were further away than the rebel ship, but they were apparently too far away to destroy it.
8. The pointless casino side mission that wasted 30 mins
9. When Finn was on Crait going into the cannon and rose saves him, yet behind them are about 5 AT - AT that don't shoot them (maybe they felt sorry for Finn)
10. Cpt Phasma's screen time or shall i say not so much, with a BB-8 that can do pretty much anything like controlling a small AT-AT
11. How did Kylo-ren not notice that Luke was a projection? they can communicate across the galaxy.

I would say this is just as bad as phantom menace, it was awful with cut scenes every 10 mins it was all over the place. i had no emotion for any of the characters left and yet Lea is still alive but luke is dead:(

How was that easily? It was nothing next to someone being picked up and thrown off a balcony of course (the amusing thing is two jedi masters/sith lords have died to that).

I still think it's possible - despite Palpatine/Sidious having "killed" his master Darth Plagueis, could he have cheated death on that, and now this occasion?
