Subaru-powered Toyota FT-86 gets closer to production...

As SS said, FX rate is screwing this, currently 1GBP = 122JPY, this is extremely poor, has been since 2008 and shows no sign of improving any time soon. Maybe if they set up manufacturing here in Derby then the price could come down. Very simplistic I know, but at a pre-2008 normal rate (~200), that would make this car £17k rather than £28k.

Because it won't really be that quick in on most roads which is where it'll spend most of its time.

That's missing the point though. It's not about 'powahhh', it's a light (by modern standards) RWD coupe that's all about the balance and poise, just like it's spiritual predecessor the AE86 Corolla. By the sounds of the early reviews they have got it spot-on.

It won't stop those people being uninformed muppets who have completely missed the point of the car.

Little touchy!

I think the audience for the car will all boil down to price.

For £28K I'd rather pay the extra £4K and get a 370Z.

It's main competitor really is the MX5, especially in terms of handling.

So for an extra £7k over a top spec MX5 you get, +40BHP a proper roof and similar (if not better)handling.

I'm not 100% convinced yet. We need to know the standard spec and price. £25K would be a much more attractive price.

Enough to distance it away from the 370Z and enough to justify the benefits over an MX5.

you dont even have to pay the extra 4k! you can buy a 370z with less than 100 miles on the clock for 28k

The problem is the point is to try and recreate the magic of a car from a quarter of a century ago which sounds good but with only 197bhp its a high 20 something thousand pound car that (apart from running costs) appears no better on paper than an RX-8 and from a £ per fun pov looks to be out gunned by tuned S14's or stock S15's.

I don't think its people on this forum who have missed the point I think its Toyota.

True but I am comparing new to new pricing. Using used car prices isn't a fair comparison.

Very true.

I think the stats look pretty good. The sort of people who will buy this don't want 300bhp and 0-60 in 4 seconds. It is the same market as the MX-5. Low running costs and bombproof reliability are the order of the day. Yes a 370z is a technically better car but equally, they cost more to run. This thing will do 42mpg combined and sit in a low tax bracket. It is however, quicker than an MX5 but will probably cost similar to run. It is also as quick as most of the hot hatches.

spec from Top Gear said:
But enough of that, it’s the driving that counts. The 2.0-litre flat four is naturally aspirated, revs to 7,400rpm and develops 200bhp and 151lb ft of torque. These, you don’t need me to point out, aren’t massively impressive figures these days. And the BRZ isn’t a massively fast car. Final homologation happens next month, the expectation being a 0-62mph time of around 6.8secs with the CO2 target being 160g/km. I’d guess at a top speed of around 145mph, and 42mpg on the combined cycle.
