Summer Transfer Thread 2018

I'd rather we gave some time to the youngsters, a few are very highly rated in the club so pointless holding them back.
Kent and Woodburn especially. I could see them looking elsewhere in the next few years if they don't start getting some first team play time.
One thing I do hope is that with some decent cover we can give a cup run some priority. We've not done well in a cup for a good few years now thanks to resting players and fielding a weaker team.

Definitely this, it annoys me when we keep going on year after year about these brilliant youngsters we have and then they pootle about in the reserves and end up moving on to other clubs to get games , people like Suso and going further back Rizzo. Frankly I expect to see Woodburn, Kent, Wilson and Brewster all to move on, which is a real shame for players who showed so much promise

Same at most top clubs unfortunately, the league is all about money these days so clubs would rather go out and buy an 'established' player rather than give a youngster a chance. It hampers the national side as well.

Just look at Chelsea, sell Chalobah on the cheap and loan out Loftus Cheek yet bring in Bakoyoko for £40 odd million.

That's certainly the case at a lot of clubs and with a lot of managers but not Klopp. The first thing Klopp done when he got the Liverpool job was to recall all the youngsters that were out on loan (ones we were able to anyway) so he could look at them and he's repeatedly given youngsters chances in the side too. I think sometimes we don't recognise how big a step up it is from academy/reserve team football to top level PL teams. @Tombstone mentions players like Suso - he looked outstanding in the youth teams but he's not getting near this Liverpool 11 now and it was the arrival of Coutinho (only 1 year older than him) that showed that and lead to him leaving. Same story for Kent and Wilson, they're into their 20's now but they're a million miles behind players like Salah and Mane. Brewster and particularly Woodburn are huge talents but regardless of opportunities, nobody could say with any degree of certainty that they'll make it to the very top because they likelihood is they won't.

Yet Suso is now one of the first names on the team sheet at AC Milan and very highly rated in Europe? Premier league teams need success and fans demand it. The gravy train needs to continue so young players rarely get a chance to establish themselves. If anything Liverpool are the exception with TAA.

Milan are pretty average, being good enough for them doesn't mean he's good enough to play in a big team in the EPL.

A Milan side that would be lucky to finish in the top half of the PL and has Fabio Borini making 43 appearances for them last season? Suso's not a bad player, far from it in fact but he's not a top class attacking midfielder that's going to play regularly at a top 4 PL side, one of the big Spanish sides or any other side that will challenge for the CL. Suso is a great example of the point I'm making - of all the players that have come through our Youth/Reserve sides over the last 10 years he's the one I thought looked the best and had the best chance of making it with us but the step up is so big and there's so many factors that can stop a player making that jump. Technically Suso's a very good player and with the right attitude and or being a bit bigger, stronger, quicker then he'd have had a real chance of playing at the highest level. Unfortunately for him, he has physical limitations and seemed (certainly looking at his time at Liverpool) to lack the drive & determination to make the most of his ability. Compare that to somebody like TAA, who's got the ability, is a natural athlete and seemingly has an excellent attitude, always looking to learn and improve to become a better player.

They can leave permanently for me. Neither are or will be good enough.

I agree on Kent, although I'd not be against another loan if only to increase his value for a future sale but I'd certainly not be in a rush to push Woodburn out the door! He's got bags of ability and although, like Suso, there's a concern over him physically, he's still young and could develop more and or with the right attitude, learn to adapt his game so that he's not overly reliant on that.

Lyon can't announce any major deals while the stock market is open is what a couple of french news outlets are claiming.
I don't get why though? Or am I being thick? I don't follow stocks or know implications of them, not like they could be that badly effected by selling just one player surely

I'm no expert on french stock markets I'm afraid but it's not simply selling one player though. It's a €60m transaction which is big business for a club with a turnover of sub €200m. Such a large deal could, in theory, lead to big swings in share price and I'd assume that the reason for any announcements to happen after close of business is to minimise this.

What happened to Flanagan, wasn't he meant to be the scouse Cafu :p

Never seemed to truly recover from that injury a few years back and then pleading guilty to assaulting his girlfriend didnt really help matters either. On top of that, believe it or not he is 25 now, not likely to break into the first team now.

As for Can, I still think he will go on to become a very good midfield general, I wouldnt be surprised to see him captain Germany in a few years time, but really he is better off in a slower league as he doesnt operate fast enough for the EPL.

The Cafu thing was just a joke. He had half a good season under Rodgers but he was only ever a stop gap and in the side because we had nobody at LB. He could have made a decent career for himself without the injury problems though.

I'm completely undecided on Can. There's times when he looks like becoming a top class CM but then there's others where you wonder what he's doing. The biggest issue with him was there was no obvious role for him in our side - he's not a natural holding midfielder, nor is he creative enough to play in one of the more advanced roles. I'm sure he'll go on to have a good career from himself though.
