Summer Transfer Thread 2019

You're going to start 13 players?

Worth a go.

I'm in the camp that believes that we are probably around the same as last season but a bit more fragile. We have lost Herrera who was a solid terrier in the midfield and someone you could depend on to work hard for the team and do what he is told. We are losing Lukaku who did score some goals and provided a couple without replacing him. Our defence should be much better but with Matic in front of them we will still ship a load of goals from untracked runners into the box.

We are basically going into the season with a number of assumptions, all of which have to be true to have any chance of top 4.

1. Rashford, Greenwood and Martial will step up and score a lot of goals. Oh and Sanchez will do something...
2. McTominay will continue his pre-season form and become a PL top 4 quality CM (which I doubt).
3. We won't get any serious injuries to the likes of Rashford, Martial, Pogba, Lindelof or Maguire.
4. We will be a fitter, more dynamic team than we have been for the past 6 years.

If we don't get top 4 then next summer we will be looking to replace Pogba and DDG, potentially Martial as well.

Liverpool and Man City are on another level to us. Spurs have potentially had a decent window (remains to be seen) and Arsenal have gone all out to score more goals than their opposition and are probably favourites for the last top 4 sport. We will be fighting with Chelsea for best of the rest I imagine.

I agree with all of this. You are stronger defensively, but you're relying on Maguire making a big step up - he was decent at Leicester, but not at the level of VVD, Laporte, or even some of Spurs's CBs. Similarly, AWB is untested at that level - performances which were acceptable at Palace will not be at Utd.

In my opinion your midfield has been your big problem for years. Yes, your CBs haven't performed, but a big part of that is because your midfield is wholly incapable of keeping the ball and transitioning it into attack, putting the defence under pressure without cover. Nothing this year has improved that, and losing Hererra may actually make it worse.

This may be resolved if you defend more from the front by pressing high, but while Rashford may do that, I don't think Martial will, and I've not seen enough of James to comment. I can't imagine Pogba and Matic being capable of hunting in packs as Liverpool's midfield does either - they're both better when they take up a position and control it. All of this really goes to your point 4 which I don't think has been addressed.

I'm happy to be proved wrong as (despite being a Liverpool fan) something other than a two horse race would be enjoyable, but I can't see it.

I don't know if Maguire needs to make a big step up to be a big improvement on our current CBs honestly. The truth is that VVD was not considered half the player he is now when Liverpool bought him. Almost everything thought he was overpriced and wouldn't be worth the money. If you offered him around for £100m+ now he would have half a dozen teams willing to pay that. Time will tell but I think AWB and Maguire will save us 15 goals or more this season.

Our midfield has been a massive issue for about 12 years I reckon. For years Ferguson didn't buy any top class midfielders and we suffered for it. A lack of cohesive plan and basically cheaping out on top class midfield players for years has meant that we are constantly putting out a midfield that contains one top class player paired with 2 ill fitting accomplices for them. We buy Fred for £55m and hes baring a miracle, crap. We bought Matic when he was surplus to requirement at Chelsea and he gave us half a season of good performances before his legs gave up and he settled into the malaise that is seemingly contagious at United.

Who knows what Tottenham will finish the league with but they have a great midfield and they have added N'Dombele to it (who would have been great for us) and are still looking to improve it. We have arguably the weakest midfield of the top 6 and we are ignoring it / losing more quality from it instead of improving it.

We are years away from competing for the title and ever year we seem to be dropping back instead of catching up. New owners and a complete re-think needs to happen.

Honestly, if we give our youngsters a proper chance this season and we finish 6th I don't care. I want to see exciting, brave and good football. I remember Liverpool a few years ago. They played good football but didn't have the consistency.

Good football == fan patience == time to build == modest success == stability == trophies and more money.

At the moment I just see us slipping downwards into irrelevance while the Glazers milk us dry as a commercial venture until we are no longer worth much on or off the pitch.

No replacement for Lukaku or Herrera? Where are the goals coming from.

As I've said, Martial (who has a better finishing record than Lukaku and most of the league), Rashford and Greenwood. Lukaku managed a whopping 15 goals last season, it's not like we're replacing Messi. As for Herrera it is clear from pre season that McTominay will be replacing what he brought to the team. He had a great end to last year and he's had a great preseason.

I dont have faith in Rashford/Martial and Greenwood, every weekend it's the same complaints and they were largely ineffective for most of the season (especially towards the end). I'll be happy if I'm wrong but all these players are inconsistent and every season ultimately disappoint everyone.

We've never given them a season at striker, it's time we tried. Lukaku was largely ineffective so at worst we've got an equal replacement.

That's fair I suppose, but their records are not great, I have concerns over Martials fitness record.

Like I said I'd be more than happy to be wrong, but I just dont see how this season, suddenly Martial/Rashford/McTominay/Greenwood are going to get us anywhere when they have done nothing as of yet to prove they can do so. Martial to me is Nani 2.0, glimpses of absolute brilliance every so often but just inconsequential most of the time. Losing Hererra who was one of our standout players last year with no replacement and the same team that was awful last year is par for the course really, I bet the glaciers are rubbing their hands over the 80mil injection of cash from Lukakus sale.

I remember thinking wish we had gone for Moratta when it was a toss up between him and Lukaku..........

Neither lived up to their 'potential' :p.

We are rubbish up front look our stats last season against any top six team and look at the Barcelona game. Some of these we only had one pathetic shot on target.

We created and scored far too little, And now with the window closed were starting with a stronger defence, A much fitter and motivated team but weaker in midfield and upfront without Herrrera and Lukaku. Absoloute madness risking no top 4 they could lose Pogba DDG Lindelof etc for that. Woodward is a shill i bet he would like to give Herrera some of the 500k Alexis is on. Or what about the 11m loan that Darcie Glazer took out against the club? What did she buy 11m worth of nose jobs?

You never know, perhaps Sanchez will actually perform to some level for us this season.

Dammit I hate when they wait until the last hours to get any news out there...

Less than 4 hours to go, and it's very, very quiet :p

He wants to play on the middle or left though when we could have moved for Eriksen. Or he goes to the left and upsets Martial. I hate Alexis imagine walking in on 500k above everyone else and being a complete flop and loner lol.

He killed any squad morale there was why he was not given the Lukaku treatment boggles my mind. I would have even preferred to let him go on a free and bring in bale even though i hate him too. I do not mind a season of Rashy Martial and Greenwood but damm you best have the best midfield in the prem to ping them balls all day long. Well we do not have that we only have Pogba who is in that mould. Matic and Fred are wanderers and Mc Tominay needs time. So we need someone like Kante and Eriksen to pull that off i think. That is not going to happen i am very worried Arsenal might outscore us.
